Ouch

I am writing this while I lay on my back in my living room, my iBook sitting atop my chest…because this morning, Anne and I were doing some planting, and I threw out my back.
How did I do that? Oh, I was doing something very manly and difficult…I was lifting a half-empty watering can and moving it. I was bent at the waist, and when I turned to put it down, I felt my back sieze, and I fell to the ground…it was very “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”
So we spent the day trying to get my hips to relax, and take the pressure off my back. Thankfully, my parents live nearby and I was able to sit in their spa for an hour…I’m feeling better, but I’m nowhere near 100%, and I am really freaked about working tomorrow…I checked the schedule and I’m sitting for most of the day, but damn, man, sitting really hurts.
And can I just say that typing while laying on your back isn’t the easiest thing, either? It’s yet another nail in the coffin of my camwhore dreams.
So the gallery opening last night was really fun, and CROWDED! My friend Sean said that there was a bigger turnout than he had ever expected…oh, and the show was amazing. It’ll be open until the 30th, so if you’re in town, you should check it out. I met a few WWDNers there, so that was spiffy. I hope you guys enjoyed the show. It was the first opening I’ve taken the kids to, and they really dug it. I think it helped that there were pictures of skateboarders and punk rockers all over the place. I don’t know if they’d appreciate a Mark Ryden or a Clayton brothers show…but we’ll find out soon enough.
I hope everyone had a great weekend. I work all day with Chef tomorrow…so I’ll have some lame fanboy stuff to share with you all.
Update: I just saw this over at boing boing. Coolest. Thing. EVER!

  1. Don’t feel too bad Wil, I once threw my back out just getting outta bed :-O But…..then again, I’ve got 10 years on you pal.

  2. Man get yourself off to an Osteopath (Or a chiropractor if need be) and get it sorted.
From past experience and knowledge, rest is just about the worst thing you can do as it causes you muscles to sieze up around the problem and doesn’t let it heal as quick as it should.
I know it hurts but move around, bend, stretch
do anything other than just sit still
Oh and get some warming muscle rub gel stuff… that will help your muscles relax enough for your back to move slightly.
    But get to an Osteopath!!!!!

  3. gawds, i remember the first time i hurt my back. it was in the dark delves of the necromancer durthiv, at the great gate of the second wall. we’d just slain a pack of vampiric cave sloths, when the guards in the tower let the porticullis drop upon us. i threw down my crossbow and blade and caught it, and was readying to throw it back up into the slot from which it had been released, when the muscles in my lower back spasmed. were it not for the presence of eladrin, i swear that i should have been skewered and crushed in a most painful manner.
our cleric was already dead, consumed by the fires of a pit fiend two dungeons earlier, but eladrin’s ray of frost spell felt just as good as any curative dweomer might have!

  4. Wil,
Bad back eh – you should be like me ….. spineless, I never get any back problems :-)
Other than that can I suggest total spine removal, this painless process can be carried out in the privacy of your own home for very little cost. Just tell your wife she has put on few pounds recently.
Seriously though, hope it doesn’t ruin your filming tomorrow. Good luck
    Mark

  5. Wil – sorry to hear about your back. Ice + ibuprofen + a wee dram of single malt whisky at bedtime does wonders.
I was at the gallery opening. You’re right, it was hella crowded, but the show was amazing nonetheless.
    Feel better!

Yeah, sure. (cough, cough. nudge nudge, wink wink, knowwhatimean). We’re all thinking the same thing: sex injury.

  7. I’m glad the gallery show was a sucess. And welcome to the BAD BACK CLUB (BBC). Take it easy next time. I hope work does not agrivate your back even more. And no fun for Uncle Willie’s Willy, you need to rest as much as you can, and no over do it. It may be pleasurable, but it can do more damage to your back.

  8. Hey, I won’t comment about your back since everyone else around here did that already. Just want to say thanks for keeping us posted about your latest film. Thanks for being so REAL. It’s refreshing.
    Take care!

  9. I wanted to post a comment yesterday, but was old I wasn’t allowed to. :(
So, how are you feeling today? A little better, I hope. :)

  10. Now that I’m 50 years old and a lot creakier than I used to be, I’d recommend taking a Feldenkrais class or finding someone who will work with you one on one. My first experience with Feldenkrais was actually through an acting studio (in the Bay Area) but now I just use it for ease of movement.
