I am so excited to share this with all of you. About a year ago (or ten years ago, what even is time amirite) I worked on a FANTASTIC movie […]
destroy all monsters
I have never been a huge fan of Kaiju movies, but I think it's because I never saw the right ones. If you, like me, are new to this genre, or are curious about it, I can't recommend Destroy All Monsters enough.
“Memory’s fog is rising.”
I wrote this last night. 30 years ago today, John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness was released. That means that 30 years ago tonight, I was at the AMC 10 in […]
One year ago, I rebooted my life. Has it worked?
Just about one year ago, I took an honest look at myself and I didn’t like what I saw. I needed to reset a lot of habits, make some significant […]
Why does everyone want to be Rorschach? Me, I prefer The Comedian. I like his rather real politck veiw of the world. The world is divided into right and wrong, and The Comedian gets to do the dividing.
Well, being from Kansas, I also gotta have a soft spot for Dollar Bill. Shame about his cape though….
Everybody should start sending copies of the Watchmen to Peter Jackson at once.
I can totally see Wil as Rorshach…but I mean that in a *good* way….
“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.”
Actually, give Wil a few more years and I could see him as Grimjack!
I can remember when talks of a movie first came up, what, teens of years ago, talk of Burt Reynolds as the Comedian were forefront. I think it still holds true.
Wil’s good for a leaner, more naive hero (no disrespect intended).
Of course everybody wants to be Rorschach. But they’ve got to have the right mindset to make it fly. I can’t think of anyone who can play sanely crazy or crazily sane at the moment.
Rereading mine as well, now.
Burt Reynolds would be really good as The Comedian.
I’m going to start a geeky “who would you cast in The Watchmen movie” thread in the soapbox.
Head over to http://www.needcoffee.com and check out their Dreamcasts… their dream cast of the Watchmen would have William Macy as Rorschach, and I thoroughly agree.

The Watchmen. Excellent comic series – I’m glad to see that it is still held in high regard and hasn’t been forgotten. I have in my possession a screenplay draft (don’t even remember how I got it) of The Watchmen written by Sam Hamm. Too bad a film (or mini-series) version of this series has never been made (yet). I should dig out the comics and read them again, now that you have reminded me.
Another favorite comic series of mine from several years back: Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters, by Mike Grell. Anybody here familiar with that one?
Mmmmmmm………….Comics
Hey Wil,
Goin’ to the Comicon in San Diego this summer??
Hope to see ya there!!
Heheheh…. Funny comic… Oh yea, nice post at 4:20 =)
Dave, I forgot all about The Longbow Hunters! Yes, I still have that in my comic collection too. That whole Green Arrow series Mike Grell wrote was really good, although he seemed to run out of ideas and I lost interest in it not long before it ended (and Oliver was killed off). It was GA’s cameo in The Dark Knight that got me interested in that character. Comics had a conscience back then. Maybe they still do, I don’t know. I guess Kevin Smith (yes, *that* Kevin Smith) has revived the character, brought Oliver back from the dead, and written a new GA miniseries. Has anyone here read it? I just might have to check that out.
Wil, I can totally see you as Veidt or Night Owl. Rorschach rocks, but that role would be a challenge. Should we start campaigning Peter Jackson to make the movie and cast you? 🙂
On the subject of Rorschach, how about the mighty Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame? Sanely mad, madly sane, just the right amount of over acting…
That watch-guy is all well and good, but I prefer this…

We now know what Pete Townshend likes to watch. Don’t know about Daltrey.
“He had created a psychopathic rabbit who carried a chainsaw and went around on a murder spree. He wore a smiley face as a mask.”
Sounds like the original Chainsaw Vigilante from back when The Tick was just a brilliantly funny indy comic book.
We seem to be talking about a comic book that I’m not aware of. Which is odd, because I’m a total comic book junkie. When I saw the happy face, I thought we were talkin’ like, that 70’s show or something. *hangs head in SHAME!*
“None of you understand. I’m not locked up in here with you, you’re locked up in here with me!”
I so hope this gets made into a movie.
Wil, I honestly think you’re much too young to play any of the main characters. However depending on how long it takes to get made you might age well. 🙂
Here is my fantasy cast
Rorschach: William H. Macy
Doctor Manhattan: Vin Diesel
Silk Spectre: Carla Gugino
Nite Owl I: Dennis Hopper
Nite Owl II: John Cusack
Veidt/Ozymandias: Christopher Walken
Comedian: The Rock.
You’re right, Wil — I could totally see you as Daniel Dreiberg, the second Nite Owl. I’d think Adrian Veidt would be a much less rewarding part for an actor, anyway.
The rec.arts.comics usenet newsgroup went wild over Watchmen when it came out (this predates the Internet). There were hundreds of messages about it with detailed analysis of panel layout, character development, and more which were great! I printed a lot of it out, but I don’t know that I still have them. I also saved a lot of it to floppy, but I don’t know if those floppies can still be read. Aren’t there old usenet archives being kept online somewhere? The speculation from issue to issue beat anything I’d ever seen there before. Of course, my interest in comics has diminished with the passing years, but I still recommend Watchmen as one of the best comics ever.

Shaun, the Kevin Smith Green Arrow series was quite good IMO. He did a great job of “resurrecting” Ollie. I believe that those issues have been compiled into a graphic novel, which probably goes by the title that the Smith series had, “Quiver”. Pick it up if you get the chance, I’ll bet you’ll like it!
P.S. I also loved Ollie’s appearance in the Dark Knight series. It was a cool surprise to see him there! And the writer who “killed” Ollie in the GA series paid homage to Miller’s idea of Ollie having lost an arm because of Superman.
OK, back to your regularly scheduled Watchmen discussion….. 🙂
Dang.I always miss the excitement. I wasnt watching the watcher(Wil)…do I say “break a leg” to TV/movie actors too? Im not sure. 🙂

I think I’ve still got the pin too… if I can ever clean up that mess I call an attic.
I’ve been reading all the speculation of who should play whom in a Watchmen movie, but you know, back in the day when Alan Moore’s classic series first came out, everyone at my local comic book shop had this discussion. We all agreed that Charles Bronson would make the best Comedian, hands down. It’s a little late now, but if they’d have been casting back then, I can think of no one better.
And while we’re on the subject of Alan Moore, I highly recommend you check out the single best comic book I have ever read, Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing Annual #2. It also contains the single best line I’ve ever read in a comic book. When the Phantom Stranger admonishes the Demon for breaking the rules by aiding Swamp Thing. The Demon laughs and says, “And what shall they do? Condemn me to Hell perhaps?”. Too cool!
“Raw shark?”
Any particular reason why “The Watchment” is being mentioned so many years since it’s publication. Not that I mind it, as it’s an excellent example of the fine writing of Alan Moore. His writing in Swamp Thing was the best for that series had ever seen.
Speaking of comics… Ever read “A Distant Soil” from WARP comics (early 1980s)? During the course of the first three issues, it picked up a manga style in layout as well as character design.
“Though much is taken, much remains, and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are-
One equal temper of heroic hearts, made weak
By time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
The Nite Owl Lives.
Woah- weird, I’d forgotten I was even hosting that site.
Thanks for linking to it!
I recommend V for Vendetta as a side dish to the main course, that is, The Watchmen. Also League of extraordinary gentlemen. too.
Simply delightful that you’re a Watchmen fan, Wil.
I remember sitting in a huge, flat purple beanbag (that spewed foam pellets with every movement) in my first college apartment, reading Watchmen. Thought it was one of most brilliant things I’d ever read.
Now, over a decade later I think it’s still one of the most prescient sci-fi graphic novels made.
Love it, I do – and love that you love it too! (Good Lord, that was Yoda and Barney in a blender!)
Wish you much future success!
