WWdN reader beccaelizabeth e-mailed me this morning:
Recently, at the Galactica One convention, Sam Witwer, who plays Crashdown on Battlestar Galactica, said he got into acting because of meeting you when he was 11 or 12 and a Next Gen fan. He was getting a tour and the guy said something like ‘Next Gen is filming over there. We can’t go there.’ But then you were in your trailer and you talked to him. He was really enthusiastic, saying how at the time of course Wesley was his favourite character, and he got to meet you and youtalked and were nice to him.
Someone else in the audience mentioned your website and your books and told him (and the other 100+ people in the hall) how good your books were, and that no he didn’t work for you in any capacity.
Your fans get everywhere. Including good TV shows.
She has a full report on the con in her livejournal (which, she disclaims, is not her best writing. Seems fine to me, but what do I know?)
I love it that lots of people got to hear about my books and website (*wave* to any of you who are dropping by for the first time) and I love it that Sam not only remembers this interaction with me, but still tells the story! It’s a wonderful example of why it’s imporant to treat people the way you want to be treated. It’s also an example, when compared to my experience with WFS, of how lasting an effect these encounters have on people.
In other words, use whatever you have for good. That’s your lesson of the day.
Dunno if it’s just my FireFox 1.5b1 running on top of my newly upgraded Mandriva 2006 with KDE 3.4 or not…
But her text is cut off on the right hand side, what seems to be about 1/2 inch, so that there are just enough words missing to make it difficult to infer what she’s saying.
Ok, just checked on an I.E. compfuter, and it looks the same.
It looks to be a combination of blockquote and pre…. pre == teh bad!
Yea, I got cut off words to
meh.
Yes, I’m getting the same problem as ak_hepcat. I got the gist of the post though.
I really do appreciate the fact that you treat, not only your fans at cons, but also your readers and all of us who comment here at WWdN (or here in the balmy breezes of exile) with great respect. I mean, I think other people will probably agree here that we feel like your friends more than just fans. Which is probably why your blog is so popular. I know I’m here every day, checking to see what you have to say and what’s new with the others.
Alright, the gushing is over *blushes*. A round of Duff for everyone!
The words are there but they’re “behind” the info column. If you highlight part of the text and pull your mouse to the right, you can see it.
It’s very true, you never know who’s life you can change with seemingly the smallest of actions (positive or negative). What a great story. I hope you’re as proud as you should be. I hope you don’t mind but I’d like to post a bit of this on my actor blog (www.anactorsjourney.com) — we actors need to hear more positive stuff!
Its hard to say it better. Thanks, Will. You summed it up. Treat others as you want to be treated, as it always can come back to you. Its better to have something good come back to you.
it’s interesting how the most simple things in life can be so profoundly true. I will remember that myself… thanks wil
So right.
I use my powers for good AND for awesome.
that is a great lesson.
so how did the poker game go??
Yay! Death to the -pre- tag, and it all looks great.
Oh. And I thought I’d share this, because I had just read WWdNiE before receiving this link in an email:
http://www.tk421.net/character/
Which is a ‘What Sci-Fi Character are you’ quiz.
And *I* thought that it was oddly coincidental and yet cool to be one of the chosen: Wesley Crusher.
Hey I just watched Stand By Me last night. lol. I donno why, but I thought you’d like to know.
Kel
How sad. I went to one (well, actually, I’ve been to more than one) of your book signings, and you told me that you wanted to check out my blog. I sent you an email with the URL, but you never checked it out. Oh well. I don’t hold a grudge, but I have to say that I’m a little jealous of beccaelizabeth.
Ever since I first heard of the William Fscking Shatner meme about a year ago (I still haven’t read the whole story; I only managed to glimpse a few posts here and there by googling. I’m still saving up to buy ‘Dancing Barefoot,’ I think I’ll actually be able to finally buy it by the end of this month. Not that its expensive, its just that one does not make a whole lot of money by being a freelance illustrator/copywriter in Indonesia. Very interested in reading it. Wait. Where was I? Oh yeah. Anyway…)
So anyway Wil I was kinda wondering, how goes the relationship between Wil and William? I remember once reading that you two once watched football together or something and said that William’s not so bad after all. Do you still keep contact with him?
