there’s a preview of part one neil gaiman’s batman story online

Did you know that Neil Gaiman wrote a two part Batman special? It’s called Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?, and starts at issue 686. It’s coming out very soon, and a few pages have been put online at MySpace as a preview.

I’m a life-long Batman fan, and I’ve been a Neil Gaiman fan since I read the first issue of Sandman the day it went on sale. American Gods remains one of my all-time favorite books, and I loved Coraline so much, I devoured it in about 3 hours, pausing only when stupid real life demanded my interaction.

I sort of know Neil, since he wrote the introduction to my book Just A Geek, so last week he sent me a preview of the first part of his two-parter. (via a DM on Twitter. I know, right?! I love living in the future.)

I can’t get into any specifics, but I can say that it has the same “wow, this is just phenomenal” feeling as Killing Joke or The Man Who Laughs. Andy Kubert’s art is brilliant and Neil’s story and dialog are fantastic. Speaking as a fan of Neil’s work and a Batman fan, it was very satisfying, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the second part.

  1. *sending psychic message*
…while you’re on the subject of Neil Gaiman and Coraline, plug the Coraline movie (coming out this weekend)…
    *end psychic message*

And as the Blue Beetle! I just saw a few episodes of that show; it’s really fun.

  3. I can’t wait for this. I remember ordering a bunch of JLI from Empire Comics in the mail way back when and seeing Sandman #1 advertised in their catalog. I ordered it on a whim and kept coming back month after month, even when I quit collecting pretty much everything else.
Does Grant Morrison send you sneak previews, too? :-)
    Rock on!

  4. I LOVED American Gods and Good Omens. I’ve read almost all of Gaiman’s stuff. Stardust was one of my favorites. I found out via Twitter that he was in my city the day of (Monday, I think) and that I’d missed an opportunity to see Coraline w/ Q&A. I also don’t have cable so I missed him on the morning show circuit. *sigh*

  5. “sent me a preview of the first part of his two-parter” Yes very lucky, indeed!! This is relative to later in post. 2 parts – to all Batsman fans. 1) which came first Killing Joke the Band or title of the book? (1988) 2) I own an original printing (KJ)is it worth anyting more than what you can buy it for today?
