Second Season of Wil Wheaton Project. Yes or No? I hope SyFy channel has the foresight to keep it going.
So for those of you who don’t know, earlier this summer, I did 12 episodes of a silly comedy show on Syfy called The Wil Wheaton Project. It was basically The Soup for people like me who enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, as well as jokes about those things. If you’d like to see a bunch of clips from the show, they’re right here on my YouTube thing.
We’re officially on hiatus right now, and we don’t know if the network will order more episodes. I know that they liked us in a creative sense, but the ratings weren’t very good (ratings are generally not very good in summer, and while I don’t believe that ratings are as important as they once were, my opinion on the matter isn’t particularly important to the decision makers), but the people who did watch us really liked us. So I won’t know for a few more weeks, but until then, I’m on hiatus, which means I get to write more, play more games, and prep for season three of Tabletop, which goes into production in October.
Part of that preparation includes finding 20 games to play on the show, and as of today, I have eight (maybe nine) that are strong contenders.
What do you want us to play on the show next year? Would you tell me the game, the publisher, and why you like it?
Keep in mind the criteria for Tabletop game selection:
- Plays well with 4 people.
-
Plays in under 90 minutes.
-
Can be generally explained in about 5 minutes.
-
Has a high ration of luck to strategy, so everyone has a chance to win the game.
-
Looks great, has clear graphical design and photographs well.
-
Is not something we’ve played before.
I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.
Dead of Winter by Plaid Hat Games fits your criteria and is a great semi co-op game. I ALS think 7 Wonders would be fun to watch.
Stupid auto correct. I meant to say 7 Wonders would also be a good choice.
Istanbul would be a fun one. It might be a little tight to explain each tile in five minutes, but it plays fast and is a lot of fun.
Mars Attacks
Deadzone
Dreadball
– All by Mantic (http://www.manticgames.com/)
If you can get hold of it, and really, really, really want to make my year: SPACE HULK.
Zombicide gets my vote it’s a great game. Plus I’d love to dee the table top team as survivors next tabletop day 😉
If you play Zombicide you’ll be so addicted you’ll never want to play another game … plaaaaayyyyyy iiiittttt!
Quarriors
SPANC
Another variation of Munchkin
What the Food?!
For an older audience, Cards Against Humanity, while not as visually spectacular, would give a lot of humor.
I’d love to see Tinners’ Trail on the show. It’s a fun strategy game and it’s a fairly realistic representation of mining in Cornwall in the nineteenth century
The Downfall of Pompeii would probably be a perfect fit for Tabletop. It’s got a volcano, the game can turn around pretty quickly so anybody can win it, and the lava / dumping other players’ citizens in the volcano leads to good interaction between guests.
Angry Bunnies!
I would love to see MTG:Commander (EDH)edition but I know that would be difficult to explain in the 5 minutes.
Sorry not Angry Bunnies… It’s Killer Bunnies and The Quest for The Magic Carrot
NOOOOO! That thing was terrible. paid $50 bucks ran through it twice with the family and will never play it again.
Heroes Wanted! Create your super hero knockout henchmen and villians using your super powers maybe also punching you super hero competition along the way. Gain the most fame, that’s what it’s all about after all. Good game play with hilarity and silliness.
Zombicide.
Best game ever! Outside of the classic ‘Blood Bowl’ and a few others, but it’s pretty dam good.
play Heroes Wanted! It’s a really fun, easy to learn and great looking game. And you will be supporting independent publishers too! Fight for the little guy Wil!
Don’t Wake the Dragon.
Dead of Winter is a blast!
I’ll second this, I was going to suggest this one until I noticed that someone beat me to it.
I’d think Puerto Rico would fail the Luck v Skill criteria
Velociraptor! Cannibalism! by Board Raptor Games.
I love it because it is easy to learn, fun to play, aesthetically pleasing, and has some variety every time you play due to the environmental effects.
Full Impact MMA
I’d love to see Tokaido, Dead Of Winter, Sheriff Of Nottingham, One Night Werewolf, and Road Kill Rally
Let’s say : Five Tribes. The new ”Gamers Game” from Days of Wonder. Designed by Bruno Cathala. The games tiles look gourgeous. There’s multiple ways to win the game. I’ve read the rules and it’s easy to learn and understand the game mechanics. It comes out in September in North America and what I’ve seen so far on the Internet is just GREAT! Many Board Gamers that played it at Gen Con 2014 say that it’s gonna be 2014 game to have!
If none of you have said “Spin the Bottle”, “Seven Minutes in Heaven”, or “Truth or Dare”…. I’m extremely disappointed.
I would love to see you play Eldritch Horror by Fantasy Flight ggames. A great co op and would be fun to see you and your guests get in to the characters. Also would like to see Euphoria played. By Stonemeier Games. Great worker placement and tyhe first game that got me in to the hobby.
Also i would like to see you guys play Shadowrun on the RPG show.
Cosmic Encounter should fit nicely. Some strategy, some luck. Somewhat simple mechanically, depending on factions. Simple goal.
If you are doing a multi-game episode Escape the Curse of the Temple would be a nice one to add in. 10 mins of frantic dice rolling may not be easy for the editing team, but again: Simple mechanics and goal.
Add in “Going, going, gone!” for more stressful bidding wars (not sure how long the game actually takes, it might stretch to one episode itself).
Wiz-war does seem like a frantic absurd game, but I fear good strategy would trump luck.
Mascaraed might work for another hidden-role / bluff / “how are you so good at lying?!” game.
I would like to see you guy’s play (Aye Dark Overlord) I think this would be a fun game to watch played. It’s a pass the buck game where one person plays the dark overlord and the other three or whatever play the minions, it’s a nice game where roleplaying and quick with come into play along with the cards that come up. You’re trying to throw your fellow minions under the fall guy. I’d love to see you host this one tabletop due to quick wit and the opportunity to throw other players under the bus.
Zynvaded!
Zynvaded!
In no particular order…
Seasons
Letters from Whitechapel
7 Wonders
Tales of Arabian Nights
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Coup
Mascarae
The Resistance: Avalon
Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island
Mice and Mystics
Run fight or die – 8th summit/grey fox – competitive zombie game that’s really fast to play,
Fleet – gryphon games – must be my New England background a great competitive fishing game,
Cubist – Gryphon games – been having a blast with this game. Easy to pick up and challenging but fun to play
Firefly for sure. I would also love to see the new multiplayer version of the new star wars lcg from fantasy flight games.
I normally buy games you recommend in the show but since tabletop started branching out and discovering games . Thanks for that.
Ca$h ‘n Guns. Which recently release it’s second edition. How can it not be awesome to point foam guns at your friends. To steal the loot from them. It has a lot of strategy and luck. As well as foam guns. FOAM GUNS.
Hobbit Tales: From the Green Dragon Inn is also a story telling game which you get your friends to tell a story of an adventure as ho
The red dragon inn games are also quite nice.
Heroes Wanted, Zombicide, Greed
Oh! Totally forgot Fantasy Frontiers! Great Game with some elements from Catan and such and plays quickly.
Game: Quicksilver
Publisher: Split Second Games
why like it? Super fun, quick learn. good for different size groups. AIRSHIPS.
You’re Welcome.
Firefly!!!!!
Even the short game takes longer than 90 min. Fun game, but might be too long for TT.
Firefly! 😀
It’s cool but somewhat confusing?
Would love to see how TT discusses it.
How about considering Quilt Show? It is a new gateway title from Rio Grande that should be attractive to couples and bring more members of the fairer sex into the hobby. It borrows some elements of Ticket to Ride, For Sale, Queen’s Necklace, and Alhambra and has a unique, rich theme. The game meets all six criteria above, and its components are numerous and attractive. While luck is definitely involved, good play emphasizes minimizing it through careful planning, anticipating your opponents’ actions, and estimating odds appropriately. One of its good aspects is that the game seems to move quickly. What little down time players have is spent planning their next action based on their opponents’ current ones. All of our plays have been very competitive with tight score groupings, although we have not had to resort to the tie breaker yet.
I know that you only really do currently available games but I’d love to see Heroquest from MB Games. It was my favorite game when I was a child. A mix of RPG and a traditional turn based boardgame. I had great fun making up brand new quests to confuse my family.
I think it deserves a reissue.
The Video Game High School (VGHS) board game.
Or Star Trek Catan…. just ’cause.
Suburbia would be a great game to play. The tiles interacting with all of the others across the entire game would work very well for discussion and I also think that T’zolkin would be a great choice because it’s a very simple worker placement but the gears and the time element really give it a fresh feel.
I’d love to see Bang (published by daVinci Games and Mayfair Games), a great hidden role Spaggheti Western card game, Family Business (published by Mayfair Games) a Mafia card game about getting your rivals onto a Hit List and killed, or Cover Your Assets (published by Grandpa Beck’s Games) a card game about stealing valuables from your opponents while protecting your own.
Nuclear War/Nuclear Escalation/Nuclear Proliferation. From Flying Buffalo. Fantastic card game. Very funny and easy to play.
I think that Slugfest Games’ Red Dragon Inn would make a great game for Tablestop. It’s quick to learn and play, is pretty hilarious and in my experience at least encourages a bit of roleplay at the table.
“Gerki, my friend, you unfortunately don’t have a drink! We must rectify this!”
Agreed, just picked this one up. Needs a few of the expansions like “Erin the Ever-Changing”
I think your requirements perfectly described the card game, Gubs currently produced by Game Wright. The game is light hearted fun. It seems complex, but can be explained in under five minutes with a one sided page of rules total. It’s about knowing the cards and the deck and using simple strategies with a good dose of luck. The winner isn’t determined until the end of the end. I’ve never played two games that are alike, and every game has something that at least makes me chuckle which is saying something, since I’ve played the game for over ten years now!
Zombicide would be a great game to see played!
yes zombicide would be great for your show
Well, I guess Here I Stand is out. How about Chaos in the Old World? It seems to fit all the criteria, although it might be a bit more than 90 minutes.
Boss Monster: The Dungeon Building Card Game, with or without the expansion. Seriously fun! http://brotherwisegames.com/
I would like to see:
Dead of Winter – by Plaid Hat games
Arcadia Quest – by CMoN
XenoShyft Onslaught – by CMon
Star Realms – by White Wizard Games (4 Player)
Legendary: Marvel Deckbuilder or Legendary Villians; it CoOp so everyone wins or everyone looses 🙂
Ghost Stories with White Moon Expansion
Asmodee
4 players, cooperative, never ending onslaught of ghosts that plays in about an hour
2) Alien Frontiers, 4th edition with factions / outer belt expansions if you’re looking for some more spice and variants
Game Salute
4 players, competitive, worker placement, take control of the newly discovered planet Maxwell
3) I’d like to see you replay Pandemic but with the expansions and possibly one player running as the Bioterrorist.
Cthulhu Gloom (Atlas Games) – Gloom was one of my favorite episodes, and made me go buy the game as immediately as circumstances allowed. I would love to see another amusing story play out around the table. Since Start Trek Settlers was played, there is already a precedent for revisiting classics in a different form, as well.
ZynVaded. Quick, fun, easy to learn and you can play it ANYWHERE.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/ZynVaded/144047275608078
The new Designer’s Edition of Ogre. I know, it’s two-player, but the box is so freaking awesome.
Sentinels of the Multiverse (which I know you’ve said would be hard to pull off, but it’s a great game that deserves the Tabletop treatment – maybe two episodes, as you did for Fiasco and Dragon Age?)
Cosmic Encounter. It’s a classic and loads of fun.
So. Some of these violate one or more of your rules (time mostly) but I’ll throw them out there anyways.
From the glory days of High School:
A pen and paper RPG. I know you’ve already said your going to do one as a bonus for season 3. Just saying a second couldn’t hurt if you feel like it, and if not more kudos for doing the one. I’m hoping you pick an alternative to the standard D&D genre, like Shawdowrun, Vampire: The Masquade, Call of Cuthulu, Rifts, whatever. Just something to show that while dragons, big swords, and bigger fire balls are awesome, there’s other stuff out there too. For board games I’d love to see Talisman from Fantasy Flight or Axis & Allies from Wizards of the Coast (both different versions and companies from when I was in HS, but what the hell). Granted, I get how these could be difficult for the show as they can be time consuming.
For my own Curiosity:
I’ve been looking at possibly picking up Mansions of Madness from Fantasy Flight. I dig the genre, the minifigs, and the story aspect, but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Also about to be released from Fantasy Flight we’ve got Star Wars: Imperial Assault and Star Wars: Armada. Why? Because Star Wars. And god help me but FF and George are probably going to be taking more of my money for these.
Cause I know a Guy:
A friend of mine just started his own Indy game company and is bringing his first game to market just as soon as the printing presses in china gets them stamped out. The name is Decatur from Radio Tapir games, links below. I got to play test the game and it’s a lot of fun with what I felt where some clever and unique mechanics. Rules are simple and straight forward.
http://www.radiotapir.com/decatur.html
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/146759/decatur
Finally:
You can’t because it’s not 4 player, but Star Trek Tri-Dimensional Chess . Cause Wesley Crusher is a bad ass.
Good luck making the new season of TableTop Will and I hope SyFy brings The Will Wheaton Project back for a second season. It’s been a bumpy summer and your show was the perfect weekly pick me up that I really needed.
