Sigh

  • random thoughts

You know, I’ve been a Kings fan since the purple and gold days.
So you’d think I’d be used to this.
But goddammit! They showed such promise in this series…but here’s the thing: you don’t score 4 goals on Patrick Roy in a game 7, ever. Forget the empty-netter. Longtime Kings fans saw that one coming.
On the other hand, it is strangely reassuring and familiar to have the Kings eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. And that meltdown in the third period was vintage.
Oh well, at least we have the Dodgers.
Oh, wait.
Nevermind.

Well I say go out of state for a good team other than the Dodgers. The D-Backs maybe. It’s next door and close. Pretend its California.

    sorry about that one, Chief.
“if not for 54 seconds of this game…” well yeah.
I wouldn’t have said meltdown, exactly. the meltdown came in the middle of the second. they had their game back on in the 3rd, it just wasn’t really enough. I was surprised to see the empty net with 5:30 left, but I guess at that point you figure what’s to lose. ah well.
just took the air right out of ’em, those two goals did. But the first period was sharp.
that last power play had to have driven you crazy, though. I’ll agree with the meltdown comment there.
well, at least someone in your family is happy. me… my wife lived in Colorado Springs 🙂

Yeah, sounds like the Canucks. It’s sorta like bad sex. They starts off with lots of promise, but they’ll always lets ya down.

Sports are a great outlet of emotion, and it is fun to cheer for your team, feel the exhilaration of victory and the agony of defeat, but in the end, its just a game.
If it makes you feel any better…I still try to like the Bulls.

I know exactly how you feel. I have been a Steelers fan since the late 70’s. (I’m 35 so no old jokes) I have been hoping every year, and every year I get nothing.

    I was bleeding both colors.
Went to Game 2 of the first round wearing a Kings hat and an Avs jersey. How’s that for confused?
And you can always pull for the Sharks. (And cheer for whoever plays the Wings)

    Hey Wil,
Can we also talk about the BLAZERS? Ach! Did they suck at this series with the lakers! Some teams go on well until the end and then just suck like some primordial toilet just got flushed. So irratating!

Sorry Wil, but the Avs deserved to win this series more than the Kings. I second the notion about Roy…nothing stops that man when the fire is in his eyes!
    GO AVS!

heh. I know the feeling. I lived in Texas and became a Rangers fan that one year they actually made it to the playoffs… that one year, oh so long ago… I saw a commercial today with the Rangers pitcher. He’s proud to be on viagra. That’s a whole other thread of conversation I guess 🙂

Sorry about your Kings dude, but what can you expect from the Habs best goalie ever?
My Habs kicked some Bruins heinie (because of that cheap shot McLaren did to our top goal scorer. Bad Bruins. Bad.)
So on to Carolina… and pray to God we don’t meet the Avs in the finals.

Living in Philadelphia I can empathize. The Phillies, Flyers, Eagles, Sixers, they’re all a bunch of teases. Every once in a while they have a great regular season, sometimes even push deep into the playoffs. But we always watch some other team drown in Cristal. The Flyers were eliminated by the effin’ Senators. I don’t think the Senators have ever won a playoff series. Oh well. At least I have my NHL2002 (ps2) to keep me company on these lonely playoff nights…

I wish I could say that I can relate…but unlike most of my hockey loving local counterparts, the teams I cheer for usually win (And no I am not a bandwagon jumper, its the same select few each year). This first series has the God’s of hockey smiling down upon me, as my Wings, Sens, Habs and prayfully islanders are moving on. I see it as balance, cuz my last place local junior hockey team of which I am a die hard fan hasn’t seen the light of play-offs in 7 years! So maybe I can relate……….

Wil, I am sorry, but the better team won! Hey, you can cheer for the Av’s now because they have a tough road ahead of them. They must now play the Sharks, starting Wednesday and if they beat them, they must face the hated Redwings. Do you know how hard it will be not to get into a fight with those old men? Anyway, next time when the Kings are more healthy, they will go farther. GO AV’s and I love your site.

Personally, I was hoping for a second shot at the Kings for some payback, but I’ll take the shorter travel time to St. Louis for the Wings. I think the Colorado-San Jose series will be a good one. I still think the Sharks are the dark horse in the West and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that one be another 7 game series.

    Wil,
New to the website (four days) but just wanted to say I am very impressed. My buddy Rob told me about it, I checked it out and I am hooked!
I always admired you as an actor, but now have an appreciation for your… Funny… (Did I use that is the proper context?)
As for the Kings, I can appreciate how you feel. I’m from New Jersey and the Devils got walked on out here by the Hurricane, and my Rangers didn’t even make the playoffs (despite having Fleury, Lindros, Messier, Richter, Leetch & Bure). So, I offer a cross-country toast to our fallen teams and hope for better luck next year!

I agree. Thats why -if the Sixers don’t make it past the Celtics- I’m giving up on the big 4 as well as the AHL Phantoms & I’ll concentrate more on soccer(MISL Kixx & WUSA Charge) and lacrosse (NLL Wings). And since I’m technically in South Jersey -under the shadow of the Philly skyline & Ben Franklin Bridge- I’ll root for the Triple A Riversharks out of Camden (I like them also b/c my alma mater, Rutgers, owns the field -well, part owner).
What happened in the east? Bruins, Flyers, Devils (who I can’t stand but they are good -at least I thought better than the Hurricanes).

    Wil,
Sorry to hear about your Kings. I too was hoping for a victory. Can’t stand the Avs. But the Habs won! I’ve been a fan of theirs since the 70’s. Living in Atlanta all my life, I too have come accustomed to losing teams. Go Thrashers!

I was sorry to hear about the result of that game, Wil. It’s more than a bummer. Personally, I was looking forward to a possible 1993 Cup Final rematch. 🙂
On the other hand, this leaves you free to root for the Montreal Canadiens who would have won the Cup again anyways. 😉

The Kings did put up a valiant effort however. They took the Avs to seven games two years in a row – not an easy feat – and Potvin managed to look almost competant for 2 of the 7 games. (I’m sorry, but the man can’t square himself to the puck ever. I would have much prefered to see Storr in net – and not because we would have won more easily. I think it would have been a better series, actually.)
Besides, we all know that St Patty is the god of goalies. Of course you can’t score 4 on him in the seventh game. Can’t even score one. 😉

As an Aves fan, that game scared the bejeezus out of me going into it. But it was a heated Western conference this year with very few points seperating the Aves from the Canucks. Can anyone explain to me why there are the Canucks and the Canadiens? Doesn’t this seem redundant?

My wife and I were glued to UPN-20 last night, watching the Avs put this one away.
I gotta tell you, Steven Reinprecht was the “sleeper” in the Rob Blake deal. A friend of mine from Apple told me this last year, and I believe it now. He’s leading the Avs in playoff goals right now (4). He’s a hard worker, and he’s still young…he’s going to be right up there among the Avs’ star players one of these days. Plus Pamela thinks he’s cute. (Of course, there are a LOT of Avs players she thinks are cute…)
Oh, and how ’bout Chris Drury’s goal? He streaked in on the net like a Tomahawk cruise missile, with three Kings after him, and snapped one in right over Potvin. Whoo-ee! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And then, of course, we have “Saint” Patrick Roy, The Iron Man With The Steel Hand. When he’s on his game, he is a brick wall in the crease. This is really his year, I think.
Now, tomorrow night, it’s time to go Shark-fishing! Meanwhile, praying for a miracle to happen, and for St. Louis to upset Detroit. The Red Wings may suck (as any Avs fan knows the chant), but they’re one hella scary team. At least, if the Wings are our next opponents after San Jose, it’ll be the rockin’est, sockin’est hockey you’ve ever seen…
Eric (from Denver, Colorado – GO AVS GO!)

Okay, do NOT bitch to me about the Kings. I’m from Philadelphia originally, and we’ve got hockey in our genes. You think you’ve got it hard, try being a hockey fan from a town like that and rooting for the fucking FLYERS. Unbelievable as it sounds from someone who was wearing a jersey with #16 on it when she was ten, I no longer consider myself a Phila hockey fan. I don’t have the intestinal fortitude for it …
