Nolan just called me from school to tell me that he got an 88 on a history test that he was really nervous about even passing.
He was walking down the hallway from one class to the next, and I could hear the sound of his peers swarming around him, in that dull almost-roar that fills high schools between classes before the campus drops back into near silence for 48 minutes.
I told him how proud of him I was, and how happy I was that he took the time to call me and tell me about it.
"I called mom, too," he said, "but now I have to go into class so I gotta go."
"Okay," I said. "I’m really proud of you, Nolan. Have a great weekend at your dad’s. I love you."
"I love you too, Wil." He said. "Bye."
I love it that my 14 year-old told cared enough to call me and share good news about his grades, and told me that he loves me, even though he was surrounded by his peers.

That is sooo cool! Of course, mostly I’m jealous he gets you as a dad and I got bubkes.
I do not have kids of my own, but I have and do mentored for 20 years. I do enjoy and relish that kids learning to grow up (A) accomplish a feat and (B) they are proud enough to tell it to a parent figure.
Way to go!
I was married to my incredible wonderful husband just 5 1/2 years ago. We are in our 50’s and have two of his kids and two foster kids at home all in their 20’s. We are sort of a fly-by-night family, but its so great. We all get along just fine and all work together. Its wonderful when one of them sits down and shares their feeings/workday stuff! I love it!!! Doncha just feel great Wil?
Fantastic!
I read this out loud to my 9 year old son, saying “I will consider myself a successful parent if you do the same thing in high school”.
Of course, knowing my boy, the words after ‘I love you too’ would be “So…can we play a game when I come home?”
That’s so sweet, I wish I had that kind of relationship with my stepdad.
