this is one hell of a geeky weekend

I just put the finishing touches on the note for the house sitter (my favorite new addition to the standard boilerplate: how to hook up Rock Band without messing up my tours) and I’m about to head out to San Diego for some awesome geekery this weekend.

Before I leave, though, I had to say: Go see Iron Man this weekend. It is awesome.  I saw a preview screening on Monday, and other than
the score (which is absolute crap) the movie is damn near perfect. I
think it’s the best comic book movie since Sin City, and blows
Transformers and the last two X-Men movies into oblivion.

Need a little more convincing? Go see it for
the pitch-perfect performances, lead by Robert Downey Junior, who absolutely makes this film so enjoyable. io9 says,
“Iron Man is the first comic-book movie that’s actually better than its
source material. That’s partly because Iron Man is one of the most boring characters in
the history of comics, but it’s also because the movie manages to
transcend its source.” I was never a fan of Iron Man, but I’m positively looney for this movie.

If you’re looking for other ways to get your geek on this weekend: tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day, there’s a Maker Faire in the Bay Area, JPL’s Open House is in Los Angeles and there’s a BarCamp in San Diego.

Oh, and did I mention that I’ll be in San Diego?

  6. Oh my god, it was so wonderful…about halfway through I turned to my partner and said, “I’m ready for the second movie now!” It’s like taking seconds at dinner before you’re even done with the first! So good!

  7. I saw Iron Man last night. It’s just a great movie. It’s the first movie since LOTR: Return of the King that I’m inclined to go see at the theatre AGAIN and AGAIN. I was only bothered by the obvious Burger King product placement (Yeah, right, like Tony Stark would head to Burger King for a cheeseburger after three months in captivity. Heading to In-N-Out is much more likely.) and Pepper’s stiletto heels that she wore while trying to run away over metal grating. But Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony makes me forgive anything.
    Have a good time in San Diego! Geeky weekends FTW!

  9. Oh, believe me, I am counting the minutes until the husband gets home and we can head out to the theater. As for geeky weekends, I need to tinker some more with Audio Hijack and record a podcast, there’s a short story to finish and get off to Sword and Sorceress 23, plus the new novel outline — did you know that Jane Austen maps surprising well to space opera?

  14. Wil, of course you have to come to Mysterious Galaxy the same day as BarCamp! Perhaps I’ll get to take a quick break and come visit. Or, I’ll try head to Stone! RiffTrax is going to be there in July and August with “Movie night”… always a good time! Mike Nelson will probably be in attendance at some point.

  15. I do agree. Great movie. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it blows away the X-Men, and I also thought Transformers was excellent in it’s own way. Jon Favreau did a good job directing, and yes Downey did a great job as Stark.
    I just wonder how many people in the theater, or out there in general got the Less Than Zero reference.

  16. P.S. I wasn’t a big fan of Sin City so I can’t agree with ya on that. Batman Begins was one of the better super hero movies that I’ve seen. So ya forgat about that one. I’m not sure I’ll like this new Hulk movie as well.

  18. I had no idea there was so much hate and indifference towards Iron Man out there. I’ve always thought he was one of the cooler superheroes, almost like a mechanical Batman. I do agree though, the movie is phenomenal and Downey is just incredible.
    Wil, I hope you stayed through to the end of the credits. Coupled with the pre-credits “ending,” I think Iron Man has the most badass outro of any superhero film.

  19. I had the pleasure of seeing an Ironman preview on Thursday night with a bunch of buddies. It was awesome. Of course, sitting with friends you have had for 20 years drinking beer and eating pizza makes it all the better!! My favorite part was when some pretty young thing got grossed out and told her boyfriend to let her know when it was over. The entire audience laughed and everyone let her know when the scene was over. That was priceless.

    this weekend, however, i will be firmly ensconced in the warm confines of cafe trieste in north beach, san fran – reading james ellroy and drinking strong coffee.

  22. I’m so happy for Robert Downey Jr. His substance/life abuse problems were the stuff legends…mostly dead legends… are too often made of. But he came out the other side, apparently mostly whole. Plus, he’s always been my second choice to play me in the movie of my life. 😉

    Funny story. I’m sitting around here on a boring Saturday watching “I Love the 80’s!”….all freaking afternoon….and I keep seeing this guy who looks familiar. I asked my wife who he was. She couldn’t remember. So I googled the name and found out you’re Wesley Crusher!

My husband and I had two plans to practically choose from for this afternoon, and when both ended up being canceled, he was like, “So, do you want to go to a movie?” Being the parents of a 21-month-old baby, it’s hard to just get up and go to a movie. Luckily, I have awesome friends who are also parents of almost two-year-olds, and one of them happened to be available to babysit. So, for our first date out in months and months, we went to see “Iron Man”. Best. Superhero. Movie. Ever. And, can I just say, Robert Downey Jr. has gotten extremely hot over the years! Actually, with the goatee, he kind of reminds me of my husband, so maybe that’s why! Thanks for the recommendation, and I hope you’re having an awesome geek weekend, too!

  26. The Iron Man source material is boring? Really? To each their own. The movie isn’t all that much changed from the comic, just blended together about 3 different storylines and changed some characters around.

    Thanks for the heads up on the Free Comic Book Day. I picked up a How to Draw Sampler by Wizard and a Star Wars mini figurine of a Clone Trooper Order 66. I also found out that Lone Star Comics does happen to carry DST Star Trek items, heck they even carry some of the old Playmates stuff. If I can’t find better prices on Ebay I might have to go back there and see what I can buy , after I come back from my trip in June to see molly that is. Thank you for keeping me updated on all my geeky needs. *Drops Dark Side of the Moon hat and doodles a likeness of favorite sci-fi whiz kid Wes Crusher with some helpful hints from my new book*

  28. Loved, loved, LOVED it. Downey is without question one of the best actors of his generation. I’m glad someone’s finally given him the money-making potential to go with the talent.
    But I expected him to be fantastic. The real revelation to me was Jeff Bridges, who was almost unrecognizable. What a great villain!

  30. I absolutely hated Iron Man after the end of the ‘Civil War’ comic series and it’s a testament to how great this movie is that it’s made me a fan of IM again. I squealed with nerd joy at the post-credits clip.

  31. For more geekiness, Adobe Media Player has a CBS channel dedicated to Star Trek TOS. They’ve got every episode on there. There’s a short commercial here and there, but they have every episode of TOS.

  32. I would go see Iron Man, but there are three things preventing me from doing so:
    1) Lack o’ car.
    2) Lack o’ cash.
    3) My on-demand service has seen fit to bless me with Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness at the same time, and Bruce Campbell pwns Robert Downey Jr.

  33. I hate all of you
    (I work at a movie theatre and sold out every show of Iron Man– worked 9 hours Saturday and 12 hours Sunday)
    I’m glad it’s actually worth all the fuss, but still made my life hell for the weekend.
    I’ve even been tempted to tell people who ask about it that Wil Wheaton said it was amazing, but I refrained stuck with “I’ve heard really really good things”

  35. IRON MAN: I didn’t pay much attention to the score, but they did sneak in quite a few popular songs from the last twenty years.
    Here is my score card on comic books and their movies.
    1) The Hulk – The best comic book coupled with the worst movie ever.
    2) Fantastic Four – Second best comic book with a very medium first movie.
    3) Spiderman – Never really read it. Spiderman II is probably one of the best movies of all time regardless of category (Spiderman III not so much 😉
    4) XMEN – Never read them but the movies were enjoyable. Logan was always written too much like Ben Grimm.
    Iron Mas was great! Now I have to go back and see the ending credits.

  36. Okay, advice heeded. Iron Man definitely delivered; I was never a huge fan of the comic but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
    Also, courtesy of SlickDeals and your previous thumbs-up via JAG, I made a purchase today. I can’t wait to finally get a chance to check this series out!

  38. I’ve never really been a comic book reader, but I’ve watched several of the recent movie adaptations and enjoyed them to varying degrees. That said, I absolutely *loved* Iron Man. So nice to see Robert Downey Jr. back on his feet, and in a big-budget, mainstream film that will allow more people to witness his talent. I’m already excited for any and all sequels they film.
    Also, my copy of “Happiest Days” arrived last week, which made me very happy. 🙂

it’s in a book

I noticed something about the way I read books, yesterday. When I start a book, it's like I'm sitting in an empty space, completely surrounded by the fog of war. Over some number of pages, that fog is pushed back and the world in the book begins to populate the formerly-empty space. Eventually, that space is on the other side of a portal that I step through as effortlessly as I open the cover of the book. I guess I've been doing this my whole life, but I didn't actually notice and note it until yesterday.

“The library is a safe place.”

In order to survive, I disassociated for much of my childhood, but I clearly remember the books. That's where I found comfort, companionship, inspiration and validation. It's where the imagination that powers everything I do creatively in my life today was born. And it all started in that library, with that librarian. She was one of the first people I can remember asking me, "What do you like? What's important to you? What do you want to know more about? How can I help you find it?"
