I’ve known George Takei and Brad Altman forever, it seems. I’ve never seen one without the other, and they’re two of the most obviously in love with each other people I’ve ever been around.
So I want to take a moment to congratulate them both on their marriage this weekend. It sounds like it was a beautiful ceremony, befitting them both.
I will also take one more moment to observe that, though George and Brad were been given the permission they never should have needed to formalize their commitment to each other, my “traditional” marriage to isn’t threatened or weakened in any way. (Astonishing, I know.)
It’s awesome to see people in the Star Trek universe still breaking through barriers, and happily so.
Of course, if they were in Canada, they could have done this years ago!
So Nichelle was the first inter-racial kiss on TV, George is on the forefrunt of human rights…what will Walter do? š
Bravo George and Brad! May their love shine for now and forever.
yeah! congrarts to both of em. just saw it on TV. good for them!
by the way wil, do you know george personally? just curious š
@mad monk
Walter will be teh guy finally get George bush to pronouce “Nuclear” correctly.
And I do hope and pray that the State of California will uphold the new law and allow for marriages for all, not just the hetero counterparts, come election time. Congrats to Brad and George!
I’m so glad for them. I’m sure in the grand scheme of things, this is insignificant to the 2-plus decades of happiness they have had together, but just knowing they now enjoy the same recognition that my wife and I have enjoyed since day one must be the icing on the cake.
@ logicalnoise:
I heard a comedian say, “Don’t you love it how George Bush explains things to us the way they explained it to him?”
Nicely said Wil. Congrats to them also. I know I should just ignore them, but the people who get their knickers in a twist over this sort of thing. Uggh! OK, I’m just going to ignore them from now on I promise.
There are days when I look around and am so proud to live in California.
Congratulations to them both!!
Yay George and Brad! Sooo happy for them!
Congratulations to the both of them š
Their marriage benefits all of us, in fact, as they’re very casually making the world a place more accepting of the idea that consenting adults should be able to c choose the people they want to be legally, physically, and emotionally attached to.
Actually, Walter and his son Andrew are active in the “Free Burma” movement. Earlier this year, Andrew was arrested at the Tournament of Roses parade for protesting China’s involvement in the Burma situation. (China sells weapons to Burma’s military junta.)
@mad monk. Wasn’t it Uhura who was the first female character on TV to show their navel?
That is fantastic! And they should have been allowed the freedom to join in this way a long time ago – in fact, it should never have been a question of whether they could. I don’t think there is any coincidence that many who enjoy sci-fi have a greater capacity toward progressive thinking in all manner of things.
For a moment, I thought you meant George Clooney and Brad Pitt. I was about to turn in my bachelorette card…Congrats to the fellas!
Two states down. Forty-eight more to go. I can’t wait till same-sex marriages are accepted as much as traditional marriages.
Dude! George is totally robbing the cradle! š Seriously, that’s really awesome. Congrats!
A big congrats to George and Brad!
Wil, you know, it shouldn’t mean as much as it does when a person congratulates someone on getting married, and points out that of COURSE they should have that right and that they are very much in love… but in this day and age, it totally means everything. I’m the same age as you… well, actually you’re a couple months older… and having been a Next Gen fan because of you since the show first started, it means so much to see you being actively supportive. So many people are looking to knock ‘my’ people down, it’s nice to know my childhood hero is not one of them.
Rock on, George and Brad!!! I hope they have many, many more wonderful years of togetherness.
Congratulations to George and Brad! We’ll do our best this November to kick Prop 8 to the curb where it belongs.
Next month, my brother and HIS longtime partner will be getting married in Sacramento. I’ll be there for the ceremony; in fact, I’m DJ’ing the reception. š
As uncertain as I am about gay marriage as an institution, I support my brother and my future brother-in-law as they take full advantage of California law as it exists today to protect themselves and their relationship. And I’ll say the same for George and Brad, and give them the same blessing I have given to other newlywed couples in Second Life: “May you live as long as you wish, and love as long as you live.”
And really, we’re not gonna see fire and brimstone, the blotting out of the sun, and Nazis riding on dinosaurs as a result of this, are we?
What I always say is, if gay marriage is a threat to your marriage, then the problem in your marriage ISN’T gay marriage.
Simply fabulous. I’m so glad you linked to that! I love the photo. Congrats, George and Brad!
Sadly, not all fans or writers of Science Fiction are as tolerant of gay marriage as this crowd. Check out John Scalzi’s column on Orson Scott Card and the looney Mormoncentric rant that Card makes regarding gay marriage.
Good Luck George and Brad and congratulations.
What a wonderful event.
Many Congrats to George and Brad.
Thanks for linking to the video Wil.

More pictures of the ’bout-time event!
Congrats to both of them!
Congratulations to George and Brad! With hope, equality will prevail in November and prop 8 will be behind us.
This really brightened my day. It’s wonderful to see that with so many things going wrong, love is still pwning on a regular basis.
Congratulations to George and Brad! I can only hope that I eventually end up with a fraction of the happiness that those two seem to have.
Happiness, by the way, that wouldn’t be threatened at all by their marriage. I’d invite ’em over for cookies and pie. š
He spoke about his wedding plans at Shore Leave 30 in July and he sounded so happy! It’s awesome to see… now if Virginia would catch up with the times….
Thanks for posting the link.
Amen and Best Wishes to George and Brad!!
Wil,
Didn’t know that gay marriage was a threat to “traditional” marriage. I always thought it was the 50% plus divorce rate.
Congrats, George & Brad!
Congrats to them!
/Hope my lifetime sees these announcements as “just” wedding announcements and having nothing to do with political or religious views on whether it is “right” or not.
Given your support of George Takei and Brad Altman, I would like to invite you to participate in Write to Marry Day, Wednesday, October 29, a blog carnival in support of marriage equality for same-sex couples and against Californiaās Proposition 8.
I am hosting it at my blog, Mombian, and producing it in conjunction with Mike Rogers of PageOneQ, one of the largest LGBT news sites.
If you could help us get the word out beforehand as well, we’d very much appreciate it.
The event will give bloggers a chance to voice their opposition to Prop 8 and highlight what they may have already done, online or off, to stop the measure. The campaign will also educate California voters of the need to āgo all the wayā down the ballot to vote on the proposition.
Please visit Mombian for more details and to submit links to your posts.
I will showcase the full list of participants at Mombian on October 29.
All participants who leave a valid e-mail address will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com.
