Got to Cornwall about 4:30 am (I slept for an hour or so in the car, then read a script). Dropped off by car and driver at hotel. Glad to see someone up and about to check me in. Take my bags to front desk, tip driver handsomely. Driver drives away. Night-porter slowly establishes that I’m not actually staying in that hotel, but another several miles away, and that driver was a bit overenthusiastic in dropping me off at hotel. Also that you can’t get a taxi in rural Cornwall at five in the morning so I am stuck there. I sit in the lobby and write Batman. Somehow, in my jet-lagged state, this all seems quite normal.
There’s something magical in the air. It’s just over the horizon, so I don’t know exactly what it is, but I can feel it coming on the wind.
There’s something about being up at the crack of dawn (Pre-crack works too) that seems to sponsor really good writing…wonder what it is?

It’s called Mercury in retrograde. Astrology is bogus, except for Mercury in retrograde which is totally real.
All my best ideas come at about 3:30 in the morning after I’ve been up all night drinking tea. It is rather magical. Poor Mr. Gaiman.
Ahahahaha! I skimmed over the all important “Neil Gaiman” part and when I was done reading the post I was thinking “WTF!!! Now Wil is writing Batman too! That damned wanker sure lives an enviable life!!”
*grin*
At five am, with little sleep, everything makes sense. Even Mercury in retrograde.
Life lesson: always tip the driver *after* establishing that you are at the right hotel.
Hmm, the only great ideas I get in the middle of the night are “Hey! Wouldn’t it be great if I cleaned the house and moved around some furniture?”
Is it that the Dodgers have come alive tonight?
hahaha.
Good old Cornwall.
Driver picked me up in Philadelphia once and drove me to a Howard Johnson’s in New Jersey.
He did not receive a tip. But by the time he dropped me at the correct Howard Johnson’s (back in Philadelphia, yo) I was too tired to eat his brains.
@ajootian: I totally did the same thing! I was thinking “Wait! Where is he now? Did he say he was flying somewhere this weekend? And he’s writing Batman now?? Huh!?!?”
LOL 🙂
Um, I first skipped the Neil gaiman bit too and thought “OMG! Wil’s in CORNWALL!” (which would _almost_ be near enough to travel there for me)
Dan Rydell: They say it’s always calmest before the storm. That’s not true. I’m a serious sailor. It isn’t calm before the storm. Stuff happens.
Eli’s coming.
Wow – they have taxis there now ?
Lived there about 10 years ago. Still have a lot of good friends there.
(and they really did have taxis when I was there too).
I suspect you’re subconsciously reacting to the fact that his October 10th entry, which mentions meetings in london, has a “bigger on the inside” tag which is what he uses for Dr. Who entries, including the earlier entry where somebody asked him point blank if he’s writing a script for the new Dr. Who.
That’s my guess, anyway. 🙂
