I’m not thrilled that my blog has recently been filled with announcements instead of original content, but that’s sort of the way things are shaking out in my life right now. It’s not bad, because I’m incredibly busy and working on awesome crazy ideas, but I feel like I’m kind of neglecting something that’s important to me. I’ve never intended for my blog to be a purely promotional outlet, but these things I’ve been mentioning are important to me, so there you go.
Anyway, to celebrate this, have some more announcements:
Tomorrow morning, I’ll be on the KTLA Morning News in Los Angeles to talk about the LA Times Festival of Books this weekend. I’ll be on between 7 and 8 in the morning, if you’re local and want to tune in.
Friday night, I’m performing at the LA Weekly’s LA Weekend. I’m doing a reading and a book signing at 7:30pm at the Montalban Theater in Hollywood. Here’s the best part: admission is entirely FREE, so everyone who is local can come out and see me perform a couple of my favorite stories. FOR FREE. Also: Henry Rollins, one of the guys who inspired me to become a writer, will be there. Oh. Em. Gee.
Saturday, I’m appearing at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. I’m on a panel about social media in Franz 1178 at 10:30am that I understand is already sold out, but I’ll be doing a book signing as soon as it’s over. Seriously, folks, if you’re in town, you should really come out to UCLA this weekend, because it’s just sensational. Also: Charlie Huston will be there. Oh. Em. Gee.
Sounds like there might be a meeting of the Mutual Admiration Society afoot. π Have fun! Wish I was closer and could come out.
It is what it is. Announcements are valid, especially announcements that point us towards cool things such as, articles you’ve written or appearances. You’re busy, and that’s cool (Better to be busy with work than not, eh?). Also, even though you’ve been creating good content for about eight years now it doesn’t mean you’re obligated to amuse us unwashed internet masses. IMHO, you should blog as often as you can for your own purposes, not as an obligation to readers. (I know you don’t feel obligated to post and just want to truly keep making something awesome here. I just felt the need to send out some “We’ve got your back and understand you’re busy.” mojo.) Also, Henry Rollins. Oh. Em. Gee.
Cheers!
π How lucky for LA! Sounds like some good times ahead.
And don’t worry about using your blog to announce things that you are doing, Wil. After all, every blog ever is pretty much an announcement in some form or another. Be it my mother announcing she just posted photos of my niece, me announcing that I have a live show I’m doing next monday, my friend announcing she has a cold, or you announcing what your schedule for the week is, it’s still stuff about us. This is keeping us up to date with what’s going on in your life, and while it may not be material that will ever get into one of your books, it’s material that we, or at least I, enjoy hearing from you.
Announce away, my good man!
I hear you about the announcements — but these are relevant ones (at least, to me). Some announcements for a while aren’t necessarily bad things, if you’ve got other things going that’re energizing you. If you weren’t blogging and you also weren’t able to produce anything new, that’d be Not So Good. The treachery of being talented at more than one thing, and engaged in many things, is that you can’t do everything with equal intensity, constantly.
At least, that’s what I tell myself when I feel the balance between my writing and my art getting lopsided.
You worry too much! Thanks for keeping us updated. Love the Internal Dialog tweets between yourself and the numerous things you anthropormorphize; it reassures me.
KTLA also streams its morning news online at ktla.com, so non-locals who wish to watch can do so.
It’s yer online journal, you get to sing all your own songs. Even outside of the shower or the car.
Am I a bad person for mentioning here that I sent you an invite to come speak at an OSS conference in late September and I’m not sure it was received? I’m not sure where your proper contact info is, or whether I simply didn’t make it look unlike spam.
Smiles, puppies, and dark, bitter beer.
Hoping to be able to pick up tix for your Festival appearance at the Festival itself. In any case, I am tempted to come see you Friday night, but Hollywood traffic on a Friday night – yeesh!
Hey Wil,
For the signing/reading on Friday will you have books to sell? I’ll gladly come down and give you money.
I’m not bringing anything of my own, but I think some of the booksellers there will have copies of my books to sell.
If you bring something of your own, though, I’m happy to sign it for you.
More announcement means more things to announce, which means more cool things are happening – and hey, you’ve earned it!
Ok.
Since this is the third site I check after turning on the computer EVERY morning, (first being my email, second being the weather)… You are inked-in appointment surfing…
Promotion-schmotion. Bring it on!
I check here to see whatever it is 1) you’re up to, 2) is on your mind, 3) the latest in Wil-Anne-offspring-dog world.
Without my dose WWdN first, the rest of the world is too stabby to handle.
Have fun with all that you announce!
Dear Wil Wheaton,
I’ll be in town for a conference in Marina Del Rey. Just when I was thinking about finding things to do, you make your announcements.
I’m not local, but I want to come to the performance Friday night at the theatre in Hollywood – I love watching you on YouTube from Atlanta – but will there be books there? I only have a PDF of sunken treasure and haven’t got round to buying anything else since I discovered your writing in that book…
Also, PLEASE come to Dragon*Con.
Heather M
Whil Wheaton AND Henry Rollins in the same building?! Ahhh! I’m actually swooning.
Slightly nausous that I cannot be there. I really want to move to California.
Want to talk frustrating? I’m gonna be in Southern California this weekend and I won’t be able to make it to the Festival of Books. Auggh!
I was so sad when I heard them mention you on the news this morning. You came on while I was driving to work π
Any chance you’ll be doing an East Coast appearance someday? I know folks on a couple con committees if all you needs is an invite… and you don’t mind coming to Baltimore.
LA is looking like a good place to hang out once you minus earthquakes, forest fires, mudslides sans kaluah and its proximity to people I no longer speak to.
Know this, I would gladly suffer all and sundry to know that you are in demand enough to attend a public something or other any given night. Again, am so upset that I cannot have the weekend for your Detroit showing.
Announce away, Uncle Wil. Your nieces and nephews like cheering for you and your success.
You are an inspiration and we all have your back. Woe to anyone who is not nice to Whil Whheaton.
Hey if Shatner shows up (he is an “author” according to the books) see if you can get him and Henry to rock “I Can’t Get Behind That” from Shatner’s CD.
There’s also people like Ray Bradbury, Robert Silverberg, Harry Harrison, Connie Willis and a bunch of others in town for the Nebula Awards, a good number of them signing at the book festival at the Mysterious Galaxy booth. I think it’s too late to buy a seat for the Nebula banquet, but you might be able to buy a non-banquet membership and attend the awards ceremony.
