I don’t know why, but Woot never e-mailed me to tell me that my shirt design was going into the Reckoning, and it slipped to number 22 when I wasn’t looking. I was told that I’d get fair warning before it was in danger of being Reckoned, and I’m pretty pissed that that didn’t happen. In fact, I’m so upset that nobody bothered to warn me about this after I was told they would, I better not say anything else that I’ll eventually regret.
Anyway, the bottom line is: I guess that means that my How We Roll T-shirt will go away and never be available again after midnight Central time tonight, so if you wanted to buy one, this truly is your last chance.
Well, I’m glad I got mine on the first go-round then! Now if I were at all close to the region where you attend cons, I’d have a snowball’s chance of getting it signed. Oh well. I’m happy that I snapped mine up when you first announced it. Reward enough for the likes of me.
And I concur, it’s sucks that woot didn’t give you a heads up…farging bastages.
I hadn’t actually seen this shirt before but between its utter geek factor and the ticking clock I had to order it. Hopefully it’ll arrive in time for my party’s next session.
Sorry to see that it’s not going to be around for much longer.
Hi Wil, saw your tweet and followed the story about your shirt to your blog here. I’m definitely a geek, but a gaming geek and not a D&D geek. I have no idea what the dice stand for but thought the design was cool so I bought the shirt. I feel for you with what happened with Woot on this, and its ironic that because of this they just got a new account as I had to create one to get this shirt LOL. Maybe through all of this your shirt design will be saved though.
Got one! I’m so wearing this when my halfling swashbuckler tank dishes out 2’11” of of mayhem and carnage.
Never underestimate the halflings.
Hey Wil, I bought one of these during the original woot sale, awsome shirt. And now it can be a ‘collectors’ item ;).
I just bought one tonight. I am sorry it is going away as I had hoped to get more. Whatever else, keep on rolling, and know that this shirt, like so much else you do, is awesome.
Well, I’m happy I gave you an excuse to talk about it at ECCC.

Kewl, thanks!
hey, wil! long time/first time… i teach a yoga class at princeton and will be sporting your shirt as soon as it arrives!
Well, I bought another shirt so I have one to wear when I wear my current one out. Sad that it made it to the Reckoning. Too bad we didn’t know sooner to push it up the list and save it.
Cheers!
Sorry but my attempt to pull it up the rankings resulted in me ordering the last one…! Now I just have to wait for it to wing its way over to the UK…
Perhaps I should take a picture of it Wil?
the shirt’s soldout… maybe it will survive? it better, ’cause i want it.
I grabbed mine last night; nothing like a limited edition item to spur the masses on to do some shopping.
BTW, love that the URL for this post sums it up perfectly.
If you own the design, redo it for a few different colored shirts, and sell it at CafePress or Zazzle. I’d buy a couple more if they were available in different colors!
I picked up one of these the other day when I saw it had dipped in the ranks. I’ve been buying woot shirts for a while now, but I still don’t quite get why shirts like the cake is a lair (11/2007) and fat unicorn (4/2008) are still going strong after all this time, while newer fresher designs seem to fade out after a scant few weeks (or months). I’m confused as to how the ranking works, since it doesn’t seem to be based on number of shirts sold. The #20 lists woots sold at 2962, while yours has 5183. I’m curious to see how often this one will pop up in the next random shirt woot.
Ok, I’m putting way to much thought into the inner-workings of shirt woot now, and I still have that TPS report to hand in.
Presumably, they use a moving average or total-per-week and not the total-overall
Is a moving average also referred to as a “rolling” average? I guess I’ve underestimated the popularity of Portal as well as that of corpulent mythological creatures. In any case, cool shirt, glad I got mine and sad to see it reckoned.
Yes, moving average is the same thing as a rolling average. I don’t *know* that’s how they do it. But clearly they don’t rank the shirts based on overall sales.
That makes sense eh. If shirt A sells 1000 units in week 1, and 0 units in weeks 2~10 and shirt B sells 100 units every week for 10 weeks which is a better one for them to keep? (I’m not saying that Wil’s shirt did either of these)
I do not know how I missed this shirt but needless to say I am bummed I didn’t get one.
Usually most would associate the Die 20 with D&D or with other D20 games out there. Really the logo could have been the same, but with the more clear geometric shapes.
I was doing one for My WOW guild, and another for my gammer ID cards. but because i lack the artistic skills, neither went very far. I think i have a few of them still psoted on my “myspace page.
If yer cutious i think its www/myspace.com/Mudogamba
I think i still have them posted. Take a peek if you like.
I need to get ahold of some better art programs, all i usually work with is paintbrush. (because its free and i have it now) lol
I liked the shirt. Had i had the money id buy one. hell, id get my guild shirts made too =)
I have roleplayed for years, and have plenty of game related stories to tell. hit me for a chat on myspace sometime and we can chat about it sometime. I always respond to my mail. (but sometimes it may take a few days)
GodDAMN it! Missed my chance to buy one. They say “sold out” today. Awesome design. I <3 my gaming dice.
Well, I guess your numbers matter whether a significant amount of the 5183 shirts were bought before or after Wil’s shirt was reckoned. If it was after, the shirt’s already canceled even thought overall sales might have suddenly jumped ahead of other shirts.
/sigh. I love the shirt Wil, I really do. I bought one when it first came out. But I feel the need (in the most respectful way possible) to point out that you might be being a bit dramatic.
Yeah, it kind of sucks that this slipped through the cracks, but it’s not like the reckonings are in any way done in secret. They’re posted every weekend. If you know enough about woot and shirt.woot to do business with them, then you know this. Implying it was something sneaky on woot’s part is doing them a disservice, as a lot of your readers, especially the ones who’s first trip there has been to get your shirt, are getting the wrong impression of how things work over there.
No, I don’t work for them 🙂
Well, here’s the thing: I was assured by people at woot that I would get a warning if my shirt was in danger of being Reckoned. I’m incredibly busy, and quite honestly don’t have time or mental cycles to think, “Oh, I’d better check on woot, even though I was assured I’d be warned via e-mail if I was in trouble, just in case they decide not to let me know about it.”
So when I get an auto-generated e-mail, telling me that my design’s being discontinued – after just two months when I was lead to believe it would be on the site much longer than that – I was really upset. If I’d known they were going to retire it after just two months, I never would have given away the rights to it; that’s just stupid.
I don’t think it was deliberate on woot’s part to fail to inform me, but the fact is they told me they would, and they didn’t honor that. I’m more upset about being mislead, than anything else.

It was nice to meet you and stand in front of you in Wil’s line at Emerald City Comic Con.
I may need to try to get me and my girl out to a derby bout some time soon. When is your next bout?
still… too bad about the shirts.
I suppose i cant blame you on those feelings there.
60 days does seam a bit on the short end of the stick.
You have to love automation these days.
I get run through the wringer on my favorite MMO if i have a bug to report. heaven forbid you actually spot something important that you may need to tell them.
do you think you would ever submit another design to them in the time to come? My self, i woul be a bit leary of a second sting.
Got my shirt this morning. i am going to wear it saturday on a first date. figure i should let this fella know what he’s getting into. ;D
thought you’d appreciate this info.

Basically, the woot emails are automated. Every Friday, they do a “reckoning recon” where then post the list of the current shirt rankings (which are also updated live on the shirts’ pages, so you can check easily at other times) and send an email to the 21st through 27th shirts in reckoning. However, on Friday, your shirt was actually in 20th, hence you didn’t receive an email. Sales from the weekend pushed it out of the top 20.
So it was an oversight by woot to assure you that you would be informed (since this loophole led to you being unaware) but they had no ill intentions.
Blurg! They’re sold out! That’s what I get for being a step behind in the tech dance (rhythmically challenged as they say). If you decide to sell them elsewhere, I’d love to get a few.
The Championship bout is May 30th @ the KeyArena.
Would love to see you and Jenny there! Thanks for sticking around to take my picture. It was great meeting you guys.
I got one off of woot before they were sold out but my friend wants one, will you be full of the hate/rage if he has one made on cafe press using the zoomed in detail view from woot.shirts?
Only in the sense that it’s stealing from me and woot.
Isn’t it woot that is stealing from you considering that they are not allowing people to purchase your design from them?
I assure you that, aside from the fact that my friend and I both have the utmost respect for author/designer rights to get paid for the work they do, he would much rather buy it from woot since a custom shirt on cafepress is $23 + shipping but they wont let him 🙁
Hopefully you are allowed to sell the design in other venues in the future, I know that there are a lot of folks out there that would love to buy one from you.

Woot’s deal with me required me to give the rights to them. I don’t normally do that, but in this case I thought it would be on sale long enough to justify that trade off.
Anyway, I can’t stop you from doing what you want to do, and I love that you like the design enough to make your own version of it. I guess there’s something to be said for “personal” use versus “non-commercial” use, eh?
