W00tstock

From Paul and Storm's website:

For decades, geeks were ostracized, picked on, laughed at and punished by the sun’s harmful UV rays. But there is only so long that a people can be kept down before they rise up against their oppressors; and, indeed, the dawn of the 21st century has seen the ascendancy of geeks and geek culture.

We now celebrate that rise to power–and let’s face it, nerds pretty much run everything now–with w00tstock, a special event for geeks of every stripe. Television host/special-effects artist Adam Savage (”MythBusters”), actor/author/blogger Wil Wheaton (”Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “Stand By Me”) and music-comedy duo Paul and Storm (hey; that’s us!) present a night of songs, readings, comedy, demonstrations, short films, special guests, and other clever widgets born from and dedicated to the enthusiasms, obsessions, trials and joys of geek pride.

This is the dawning of the Age of Geekdom–and its voices will ring true at w00tstock.

I can't wait to do this. It is going to kick all kinds of ASCII.

OMG!! I’m totally going to this!!

In the spirit of geekness, and for those of us not Californically-inclined, will there be some sort of vidcast made available after the fact?

Why does all the good stuff always happen in California? Ohio gets no geek love. ::sigh::

I’m thinking v1.2 – Atlanta, GA has a nice ring to it.

  5. Wil says:
    2 September, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I’m not sure. I’ll bring it up at the next meeting of our secret cabal, in the mountaintop castle where we have our headquarters.
You know the one, it always has thunder and lightning above it.

  6. Wil says:

    Hey! You guys get Scalzi.

Very cool, I’m buying tickets now.
Speaking of ASCII, this site with the intro screens for cracked AppleII games is pretty awesome:

After Atlanta, could there possibly be a v1.3 in Boston? (Vermont would be better, but hey – I’m flexible.)

  9. Jon Snow says:

Wil, any info on how much the tix are? I am trying to buy tix for the LA show at the Largo, but it’s not on their website schedule yet and they don’t have humans answering phones.

  10. Kevin Hanson says:
    2 September, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Wow, you and Adam Savage doing the same event – now that is a must to check out.

  11. Wil says:
    2 September, 2009 at 2:30 pm

I’m not sure. It should be around $25, though. I think that’s the standard price at Largo.

Seriously, that is ten different kinds of awesome.

Wow,, i would really go to this… if it were in Boston and not at the way other side of the USA..
    But a great idea guys!

Every once in a great while I wish I resided in southern California rather than Montana.

Yeah, but only for one day.

Do I get extra geek points for complaining that they went to all that trouble to make a monochrome screen, and then showed it on an IBM Personal Computer Color Display?

  19. Grizzly Kitteh says:
    2 September, 2009 at 5:52 pm

I can’t believe you’re doing this. You guys are sooo awesome! I only wish I could be there.

  20. SandieK says:

Does it mean anything that I first read that as ‘WootSock’ instead of ‘Wootstock’? Meh
Have a GREAT time!!! You and the other twitter cronies that are going are making me inSANEly jealous. 😛

Make sure there’s proper shielding, so the heads of the audience members don’t, um, EXPLODE from you and Adam being in the same place at the same time. You might need some awesome filters (they could be like 3D glasses, keep them in bins outside the doors of the convention halls).

  23. Russell says:
    3 September, 2009 at 4:33 am

OK … I think I’m gonna have to pout and cry. Two of my fave celeb geeks in the same place at the same time, but it will be all the way out on the other side of the country. 🙁
OK … where’s the number for that guy in SC who won the last Powerball jackpot … 😉

  24. m k glass says:
    3 September, 2009 at 4:59 am

This absolutely must be webcast(ed?). It would not be a proper geek celebration unless it was fully geekified!

  25. Samurai Avon Lady says:
    3 September, 2009 at 5:22 am

    Holy cow, that sounds awesome!
    If only I lived close enough to attend. You Californians had better enjoy it extra for the rest of us. (;

  26. Phillip Hagan says:
    3 September, 2009 at 6:07 am

/sigh The left coast gets all the Awesome Sauce. How about spreading some on the right coast? (Florida would be good, Orlando or Tampa) 8)

  27. MacGod says:
    3 September, 2009 at 7:53 am

The cool thing is… I live in San Jose, CA and I can attend this! AWESOME. I missed Wil’s readings down in L.A. (too far to travel) and with 3 kids, a wife and my other ‘adult’ responsibilities, I cannot make an event like PAX up north… So a quick ride on the freeway for 55 minutes and I will be in Geek Nirvana. (I have purchased my ticket)
Hopefully they will be recording/filming at some level and posting online for viewing… A live webcast would be cool… but probably, logistically, won’t happen if it is not already planned/ready to roll.
    Cheers,
    Bill Teeple
    San Jose, CA

My PAX spending money just decreased by $25.50. Ticket acquired.

  30. pookynoodle says:

You gotta stream it, that’s only fair =) Or make a roadshow to Austin, aka “The ATX”, we are naturally geeky.
By the way, that image is making me antsy to fire up my old AppleII-C, still worked last time I tried!

  31. Phil73805 says:

Wil, I have a dream. A dream where you show your love to all your avid UK fans and give us a visit. Geek culture does extend beyond the borders of the US of A. Jooiiinnn Uuuuuusss (Zombie style cos I know you’re a zombie fan 🙂

  32. Kirby says:
    3 September, 2009 at 9:36 am

If I still lived in Arizona I would totally drive to LA to see this! Unfortuately Minneapolis is just a bit longer drive to LA than Tucson, so it looks like I have to hope for a stream or video of it.

  33. Mr. Lizard says:

Why does evenyone make jokes out of 3D glasses? *sniff*

  34. Mr. Lizard says:
    3 September, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Very unfair. South Florida misses you (if you were ever here). If not, you really oughta visit. We have sun, beaches, palm trees… errr… well, at least we don’t have so much smoke, and no earthquakes. Besides, I owe you a Guiness.

  35. users.livejournal.com/kytyn_ says:
    4 September, 2009 at 11:45 am

*jealous* – This should definitely be done in Austin.
Also, I must ask – was that a kilt? The camera didn’t pan quite low enough to show knees 🙂 Though hopefully ep.2 will show for sure…

I just checked and it is $22 plus shipping, which doesn’t seem too bad to me. At least until you add in the travel from Portland… 8^(

d00d. It’s m0ppy from fark (or Master0fPuppets as everyone else knows me). your tweet early this morning was awesome, man. For those that didn’t see it – here it is:
“Just taking a moment to be grateful for everything that’s happened to put me right here, right now. I’m an incredibly lucky guy.”
This is why you’re so popular with us. We know you’re not a vapid money-hungry phony like most of Hollywood. You made my day with that tweet, ya know. Thanks. Really. 🙂
Keep it up, bro. We appreciate you more than you know.

  38. Anthony R. Haslage says:

I shall apologize for contacting you in this manner as it is not specifically topic related.
My name is Anthony Haslage, I am the director of web services for the International Federation of Trekkers (http://www.iftcommand.com/), a group co-created in 1984, by Gene Roddenberry. I also am incharge of IFT’s internet-based chapter, Thyla. Last weekend we had an event online via SecondLife (http://www.secondlife.com/) with Gene’s son, “Rod”. It went very well and my staff would like to have another SecondLife event around the holidays with you.
I have sent an e-mail to your “official” e-mail address twice from iftcommand.com. If you could search your e-mail account for an e-mail from the iftcommand.com domain, I would greatly appreciate it. If you can not find the e-mail, please allow me another means of contacting you.
    Thank you.

If only we hadn’t just gone to PAX (as part of our 6th anniversary gift) and if only our second child wasn’t due in October, we would BE THERE…so, when the show travels to Portland or Seattle – we’ll get a babysitter!
