50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

in which a proclamation is made

  • WWdN in Exile

I seem to have come down with some kind of post-PAX flu. It's not the Swine Flu, but I am coughing so much even I have grown tired of saying "my god, it's full of stars."

I can't really focus long enough to write the PAX post I want to write (it's at about 30% completion, I guess) so please allow me to share the proclamation I made before the concert on Saturday night:

I'm not going to lie to you, Marge: it felt pretty awesome to do this, and I think my fellow PAXers had as much fun hearing it as I did delivering it. Woo!

Thanks to spectre4545 for recording and uploading.

“that’s wil wheaton, he’s from the internet!”
hahah, that is somehow perfect in its simplicity.
    nicely done mister wheaton!

You’re very welcome for the video. Thank you for making PAX that much more awesome.

    Awesome!
At least one person is out of the office today from PAX related illness. I skipped all of the concerts to go home and sleep. I’m crediting that rest and lack of exposure for my current well being. Good trade? I’m not entirely sure, but the video above tips it towards my favor. Thanks for posting it.
Hope you, and everyone else who picked up the PAX flu, feel better soon.

I’m really sad I didn’t get in to see this show. I’m also really sad that I didn’t get to meet you, Wil, but I know that it doesn’t mean that Wil Wheaton doesn’t love me.

So sorry you got the inevitable Con Crud. 🙁
However, get thee to a GNC store and get some Grapefruit Seed Extract.
5 drops per 1 tablespoon of water 3x-4x/day should help to clear it up much faster as that it’s a really good immune system booster. (Apparently it’s like a natural antibiotic.)
Glad that you had such a fun time – hopefully you will make it to such locations as St. Louis for Archon one year or possibly even Memphis to Midsouth Con. (I know there are folks on the Midsouth Con forums who put your name on their “wish list” of folks to see.) 🙂

Via Boing Boing, PAX is reporting that there has been at least one reported case of Swine flu at PAX:
“I’m seeing a number of tweets from participants and organizers of the recent PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) which indicate at least one case of swine flu has been confirmed, and more feared.”
    http://www.boingboing.net/2009/09/08/swine-flu-fears-from.html
Crazy lies? Maybe. But you should probably keep following the story.

Ach — I thought the proclamation would relate to the imminent availability of Memories of the Future! DAMMIT! DADDY NEEDS TO FILL HIS READ-HOLE WITH DELICIOUS STORIES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feel better, and watch some Mighty Boosh while you’re laying low. “But I’m in the mindset of an executioner now! I won’t be able to sleep tonight! I’ll be lying there twitching, Mrs. Harrison’s going to go mental! This, my friends, is an outrage!”

Mmmm yes most of our group of 12 have come down with the mysterious paxflu. Coughing, sore throat, cruddiness. I mean, I know we all felt a connection @ pax and we all love one another but seems we were really sharing things. Now that’s love.
Hope you feel better soon. 🙂

  17. Grant Cravens says:

I’m feeling the fluish. But I’m waiting to see. *fingers crossed, Harry Carrey* “Here’s hoping!” I’m trying to show this to all of my non-PAXing friends, but I don’t think they get it.

  18. Jess W says:

When I first read your post, I thought you wrote, “My god, it’s full of SARS.”
Which is funny. And yet, not.
On a side note, I am presently watching your episode of Leverage on the TNT website and enjoying it very much!
Take it easy and feel better!

  19. Wil says:
    8 September, 2009 at 6:49 pm

That’s much funnier than what I thought. I said “stars” because I see them when I cough.

  20. Jess W says:
    8 September, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Yes, that’s what I figured. I hope you (and all the PAX folks) get well soon, because after the stars comes the 15-minute laser light show tunnel… and nobody likes that.

  21. RobbyRacoon Olmstead says:
    8 September, 2009 at 7:33 pm

That was just way too funny! My family and I laughed our asses off watching it. Too bad we could not attend in person.
Take care of that flu, though, there *were* confirmed cases of swine flu at Pax. Don’t make any assumptions, man, you are too funny to be getting that crap!

  23. Akialyn says:

So say we all! I completely geeked out at that point.
I am the only one of our group of four that did not end up with the nasty cough, no idea why though. I may quarantine my husband in the hopes of keeping it that way.
Thanks for posting the fun and saving me the trouble of searching youtube for it.

  24. tron256 says:
    8 September, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Wil I was there, the proclamation was epic. I couldn’t be leave that almost the whole room answered back the “So say we all”. It was amazing. Thanks for a very memorable PAX.
I hope you and everyone else who has gotten sick get better soon.

  25. Jeremy Diamond says:
    8 September, 2009 at 8:30 pm

You’re sick too? I saw on Twitter that Mike Krahulik and Scott Kurtz also came down with something.
This sounds destined to go down as The Year Everyone Got Sick.

  26. Paulius says:

    I think I just peed a little.

If it is swine flu you need to have a swab done within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms, just to be sure like.

  33. NewbieMama says:
    9 September, 2009 at 3:35 am

Aww, Wil. You’re sick? Too bad you don’t live here in Colorado. If you did I’d make you a mean chicken soup that is a cure for the crud. (I was a sous chef for a gourmet catering company.) If you don’t get better soon, go to your doctor. You never know what sort of bug is floating through the air these days.

  34. rollersnake says:
    9 September, 2009 at 5:20 am

That was most awesome! I also want a “Dept of Geek Affairs” t-shirt. My Wheaton Woot shirt gets lonely sometimes.
I am also suffering from The Wrath of Con, thanks to Dragon*Con. It feels like a Balrog of Morgoth has set up camp inside my lungs, and if I use any more tissues, I may have to replant some rainforest to make up for the damage.

  37. Twine says:

Ahh… I pondered the stars comment and just couldn’t figure it out. But I often feel lost with people from the internet, so I let it go as another riddle I wasn’t meant to understand.
That must be some cough! Take care of it and feel better soon. (And no – I’m not just thinking of the delayed podcasts this may entail – I’ll be traveling for a few weeks and won’t hear them until I get back anyway.)

Dang, and I missed all the fun concerty stuffs… next year..
4 of the 8 people i came to PAX with are down with the flu, and a 5th is feeling the signs. 2 of those have been told to quarantine themselves for a week. Luckily, I still feel fine. *knock on wood* Looks like we may have brought it back up to Canada with us..
    Feel better soon!!

  41. Aldora says:

I third the Dept. of Geek Affairs shirt request 😛 Wish I hadn’t missed the concerts, but thanks for sharing this. PAX is a really powerful place. I thought it was just going to be a regular con, but there really are memories that will last forever, and some amazing energy that happens when 50,000 people with the same goal all get together.
    Oh, found the seal 🙂

Wil, Sorry to hear that you have the PAX Plague.
While you’re recovering, here’s something to pass the time. I found this on another blog site (The Great Geek Manual http://thegreatgeekmanual.com/blog/ ). Perhaps you’ve seen this before, but I’d love to know what your Author Age is.

I hope you get well soon, Wil! I’m sure this is a pretty common thing for anyone who goes to a convention. It’s been a couple of days and I still feel fine, so I’m hoping I didn’t catch anything there! :0)

  44. Krupal Desai says:

Can I get an OK to design a “Department of Geek Affairs” t-shirt? 😀
Yeah, I was ordered to stay away from my office (my lead, who sits next to me, is an older gentleman who recently finished cancer treatment, so he’s vulnerable to any infection) until Monday. Thankfully, I had already scheduled off Tuesday, but, I hate burning through vacation days.
Though Wil, have any other thoughts about what the young woman said about PAX (regarding it being the one place that many of us are allowed to be ourselves)? That actually seems like a really good conversation waiting to happen.

  45. Wil says:
    9 September, 2009 at 11:22 am

It’s already been done! There’s a link at Paul and Storm’s blog to their cafepress store, where you can buy it.
There’s a thread on the PA forums about feeling at home at PAX. That’s the conversation you want to read.

  46. Christopher Kauppila says:

“So say we all” was a nice touch. How often does one really get to use such a phrase.

  47. dake says:

Didn’t you have the ConSARS last year after PAX too? Maybe you’ll hafta start wearing a breath-mask when you go out, just like MJ… ;P hehehehehe…

Hey there Mr Secretary of Geek Affairs–will you be touring for your book at all? Please come to Powell’s in Portland! I’m sure we can arrange to serenade you there, too.

  49. Krupal Desai says:
    9 September, 2009 at 11:50 am

Shirt is currently on order. >_< I couldn't get a Woot Wil Wheaton (the real WWW?) shirt, but this will have to do for next year. You better believe I'm wearing that to your panel next year. Do you mean this thread? (http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=100141) I posted in it (Cybit is my handle on the PAX boards). Only one I could find with a quick glance…then again, I am stuck at home with H1Nerd1, not too much better to do.

  50. Wil says:
    9 September, 2009 at 12:39 pm

    Yeah, that’s the thread.
My favorite quote: “We arent a demographic, We arent a target audience; Were a brother/sisterhood. Were brothers/sisters in arms. We are the Penny-Arcade Army.”
    So say we all.
