Hey look! It's Monday, and that means it's time for a new Memories of the Futurecast.
Memories of the Future, Volume One, covers the first 13 episodes of TNG, so each week, I'm choosing something from one episode, and performing an excerpt for you. It will mostly be from the synopses, which is where I think the real humor of the book lives, but from time to time, I may work in some things from the other parts.
Two important things:
- This does not mean the book comes out in 13 weeks. It comes out much sooner than that.
- These are not excerpted from an audiobook. These are recorded specifically for this podcast. I'm not sure if I'll do a full-length audiobook, yet, but I'm open to the idea.
Episode Notes:
- The Memories of the Futurecast works hard to earn its [EXPLICIT] tag. You have been warned.
- This week's episode is The Naked Now. I read some of the synopsis and all of The Bottom Line. I also found a memory (of the future) that I hadn't thought about in years, and decided to share it with the class.
- This week's theme music is Dropping Out of School by Brad Sucks, from his album Out of It. I used it under Creative Commons from Magnatune dot Com. Yay!
- Garageband doesn't seem to be embedding artwork (designed by Will Hindmarch, who did the cover and interior design for the book) no matter what I do. I'm aware of the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
- Memories of the Futurecast is AB negative.
- Memories of the Futurecast gives +3 to all Gnomes in the party.
- Memories of the Futurecast will take you out for a nice fish dinner, and never call you back.
- Memories of the Futurecast is about 21 minutes long this week.
- Memories of the Futurecast weighs in at 19MB this week.

At first I figured I wouldn’t get anything out of these because I’ve read and re-read the TV Squad articles, but dammit if you aren’t entertaining and insightful anyway.
In other words, thanks and keep ’em coming.
Wil, These just keep getting better and better each week. This one was one of my favorites on TV Squad and as I mentioned last week, these podcasts are loaded with extra funny. Love this! Thank you! BTW, If you haven’t checked for awhile you and Anne are about $400 shy of your goal for Ferris already. That’s pretty fucking awesome I’m say
I’m absolutely loving these, Wil. And they automatically get downloaded on iTunes, so I’m a happy girl!
Wil,
Loving the futurecasts. Can’t wait for the book to come out. I was a huge fan of the original posts on TVSquad. I hope that you sell a metric buttload of these, so you can justify doing the whole series (or at least the seasons you were on). Speaking of the millibuttload that I want to contribute, are you planning on releasing this in a PDF or similar open format like you did with Sunken Treasure? That really worked out well for me as a way to save a few trees and maximize the number of my hard earned clams that go straight to you instead of spreading octopus ink over the mashed and pulped bodies of those poor innocent elms and firs.
Great podcast… but I’m going to leave a piece of paper on this desk. You’re going to write a number on that piece of paper. If it just so happens that you never do the drunk Wesley voice again, then I’m sure that we can work something out.
Bwahahahaha!
DUDE! Was that a pirate duck? In my mind you totally squeezed pirate ducky
Loving it! Thanks for doing these Wil. Always nice to get nostalgic for the days of yore.
*Points happily at the HHG2G reference*
I won’t mock you for the text alert. I won’t even mention it, if you like! Your text alert being the TNG comm sound, that is. That’s weird. But also good.
Can’t. Stop. Giggling! At the “Drunk Wesley” voice! Dude, that was awesome. I dare say I’m almost more excited about upcoming installments of these, because it’s so awesomely funny to hear you read them, than the book itself.
But don’t worry, I still want the book. Also, I would never mock you for having a Star Trek alert sound on your phone. My incoming text message sound is Worf, saying “Captain! Incoming message.” So there.
When I get an e-mail on my blackberry, it’s Concorde from Holy Grail saying, “Message for you, sir!”
Heh. That’s my incoming voice mail sound! 🙂
I love it! I also agree with your comment about the little glimmers of Something Great within the overall crapitude of the episode. My favorite moment from The Naked Now is the drunken flirting between Picard and Dr. Crusher. Knowing what a great story developed between them throughout the series, and how much I enjoyed (finally) seeing something more than a friendship acknowledged in the end, watching that scene now is just great.
Also, it’s fun to shout at my boyfriend, “Not now, Beverly!”
Keep up the good work, Wil! I’m looking forward to more futurecasts!
Dear Wil. My wife and I have been enjoying your podcasts together. She used to have a crush on you. I was wondering, can you, I don’t know, sound a little less sexy? Maybe do more of that Wesley geek-speak.
Again, you’ve created another podcast that will keep me laughing and have cashiers stare at me skeptically as I crack up at your jokes while paying for something. Really, that happened. I was paying for Star Trek TNG season 3 and 4 while listening to Radio Free Burrito Episode 9 and burst out laughing when Picard was telling Beverly to get Wesley off the bridge.
Please keep them coming, I can’t wait for the book to come out and I haven’t read your TV Squad reviews so this is all new to me. I love it
Side note: I love your blackberry notifier, the comm sound is cool. Where did you get it?
*Also Congratulations! on making it above your goal for the Human Society. I think it is a great thing you and Anne are doing, for Ferris, and all the other animals who weren’t lucky enough to have a loving stranger take them home and give them a family!
I found that comm sound online somewhere. I have an embarrassing number of Star Trek sounds on my Blackberry, now that I think about it.
We just looked at our fundraising total, and we’re over 10,000 dollars. The number of pets who are going to benefit from WWdN readers’ generosity is just staggering to me.
I;m actually not surprised. The way you write about your family and Ferris and Riley, it makes us all feel how important they are to you and so they become real to us.
So many people felt how much losing Ferris hurt you and your family and could identify with it.
By just giving a little, maybe we could all help another Ferris or another pet just like her who needs it. Every dollar helps, and I think people get that.
Again, congratulations, it’s a wonderful thing you are doing. I wouldn’t be surprised it that number doesn’t grow even more.
These podcasts are the highlight of my week. I geeked out on TNG so bad that I actually wrote a paper on it in college (it was a comparison paper between the original and TNG and how they reflected on the society of their times). I got an A+ on that paper and the instructor facetiously offered to let me teach the class. I’d have to say I was definitely one of the people who saw a bright future in it from the start (love is blind or so they say) and I was rewarded with an embarrassment of riches. Thanks for taking the time to share your memories with us, I hope you know how much it’s appreciated.
Damn it! Someone pointed out the Hitchhiker’s Guide reference before I even listened to this!
Oh well…
You really should include a zip-bundle of all 13 of these when/if you release an audio book edition of MotF, vol. 1.
Also, drunk Wesley voice FTW!!!
I’m loving the futurecasts, please keep them coming. By happy coincidence I received an email from Lulu.com today confirming Sunken Treasure has been dispatched to me. Now I just need to wait for it to cross the atlantic…
Great podcast and thanks for the new artist to listen to as well. Just downloaded “Out of It.”
And for the record, doing Wil’s-in-my-head-Wesley’s-voice saying “You’re not going to let them kill me” is quite possibly one of the funniest things I have ever heard on the Internets. You should edit some of the clips on Youtube with that voice… you know, with all your free time.
This episode was hilarious, and your reappearance on the latest episode of “The Guild” was bad-@$$! Keep it up!

Oh, thank you for this! I’m home for lunch after a very, very, very odd morning, and I really needed the laughs. Glad I saved this until today. I can’t even begin to list all the bits that are requiring me to do an emergency ass reattachment procedure on the fly so I can get back to work. Suffice to say LMFAO.
Wil, I just love these podcasts!! I recently started re-watching The Next Generation and just finished season 1. While listening to your podcast this morning I realized that I somehow had missed The Naked Now! After listening to Memories of the Futurecast I decided to watch the episode right away. That was so funny! Thank you!!
Loved it. Remember that episode very well!
Really enjoyed the reverb on your voice at the start – very ‘Piiiggggss in ssppaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace’. I had a vision of you sitting at your puter in the space ship Swinetrek…All you need is that groovy beedlybop sound to complete your intro.
Enjoying the podcasts – can’t wait for the book. Tx.
Good God, the Memory of the Futurecasts are amazing! I can’t wait to pre-order the book. When is the next D&D podcast?
I need to know how AL-AL Cool J is going to handle that Dire-boar.
Thanks for turning me onto Brad Sucks! Oh, great podcast too.
Okay, so I’m almost an entire week late on this, but I finally found some time to listen to the latest episode, and IT. WAS. AWESOME. I tried to laugh quietly, especially when drunken-Westley’s voice first appeared, because I was listening on my headphones through my laptop, and my 3-year-old son was sitting near me. However, he must have heard because he turned to me confusedly and said, “What, Mommy?!?” That made my night! Thanks, Wil. Can’t wait to read the book!
I would like to point out, that this is one of my favorite episodes! I loved it. And everyone remembers “Didn’t Tasha and Data do it?”
I really enjoy this Wil. Thanks for reminding me how much I <3 TNG. Wonder how much the whole series is on DVD… going Amazon browsing.
Shades of Gray is actually the absolute worst episode. It’s a fraking clip show. Lazy. Unimaginative. Lousy.
I’ve heard that we had run out of money for that season, and they only thing they could do was a clip show.
But, yeah, it’s pretty lousy.
I read that somewhere. It was a three-day shoot. Note to future TV writers facing a three day shoot and no budget, don’t do clip shows. Do an episode with good writing on very few sets with very few characters. Babylon 5 had an episode (Intersections in Real Time) that I think had two or three speaking parts (only one of which was a regular character), two extras, another series regular in a non-speaking roll, one set, and very little special effects. It was still good because the writing was good. They shot each of the four acts as a single take, so there weren’t a lot of set ups. The effect was more like a stage play. Low budget? Yep. But effective.
Hey, Will, if Wesley Crusher had sounded that way, well, it would have been cool. Maybe not in character, but way cool.
