I love that this line has been immortalized in T-shirt form, not only because it's one of the funniest in the episode, but when we were rehearsing the scene it comes from, I grew a level in comedy acting:
During one of the run throughs, when Jim did his Klingon bit, I turned to Kevin and asked him, "Did he just say 'revenge is a dish best served cold' in Klingon?" like I was trying to figure out if that's actually what happened, like maybe I misunderstood him. Chuck Lorre told me that it would be funnier if I was more exasperated. "You're just here to play this game, and now some guy is quoting Klingon at you. This happens everywhere you go," he said.
I sighed dramatically, and said, "Oh, it does." Everyone laughed, hard, and Chuck pointed his finger at me. "Yes. That is exactly the way to play that beat."
When Chuck gave me that note, I grokked how to play Evil Wil Wheaton (The Big Bang Theory version), and I could see the comedy in every beat I played for the rest of the show. I totally grew a level in comedy acting, and learned something about letting go of who I really am, so I could embrace the Delightfully Evil version of myself (who I seriously hope will return in the future, because OMG was it fun to play him.)
You know, it occurs to me that some of you may have questions about what it was like to work on Big Bang Theory. If you leave them in the comments, I'll do my best to answer as many of them as I can today.
Cool geeky thing that made me smile. I went to the Amazon link for this awesome t-shirt and when I looked at the “customers who viewed this item also viewed” section, what was there? Yes, your dragon t-shirt that you so admired, you and your many fans caused those two items to be forever linked and for some reason that made me very happy.
Too bad the t-shirt is misspelled. It’s “bortaS bIr…” (capital I, not a lower-case L)… 🙂 No Qapla’ for you.
I have been VERY curious of the apartment buildings stairs set.
When they walk up the stairs are they 4 different sets set up and filmed at different times or are they all just set up side by side and the actors move between them? Maybe up to the top of one flight of stairs then back down behind the scenes then back up on camera. That is my guess.
I am just curious as to how something like that works.
As far as I know, there are two sets of stairs, and they redress them as needed to look like different floors. One set is the bottom floor, where the mailboxes are located. The other set is between Penny's apartment and Leonard and Sheldon's apartment.
Wil, I loved you on the show! I tried to read everyone else’s comments and I’m hoping no one has taken my question. Did you actually miss a convention on the date that Sheldon references on the show? Is it ‘historically accurate’?
Heh. No, that's entirely fictional. Jim's commitment to the bit really made it seem real, though, didn't it?
I loved watching you on BBT as well as Leverage, The Guild et al. And have really enjoyed this Q&A as well as your other written/spoken work.
My question is:
Are you going to come to Comicon in San Diego this year? I think it’s probably the only chance I’ll ever have in my entire life to hear you speak…unless you come to my town as I recently demanded on Eventful :0)
AND If you aren’t coming to Comicon do you have anything going on in the area that week that I might be able to attend?
Hah! Only Evil Wil Wheaton would do such a thing without good reason, hence my doubt. You and Jim both rock. I would love to see another Sheldon/Evil Wil face-off.
Thanks for answering my question! As a follow-up (if you have time), I noticed that some people above asked about what it is like for you to meet actors you admire, but I am more curious about the other side of it. What have been your best experiences meeting your fans?
Can you give me a hint about whether you have plans to be at San Diego Comic-Con this year?
I'm incredibly lucky. In the last decade (at least) everyone I've met has been awesome. Well, maybe not *everyone*, but seriously 99% of people.
The coolest thing in the world, for me, is hearing from someone who chose a career in science or engineering or a similar field, because they were inspired by Wesley. I also get to meet a lot of people who met in one way or another because of something I said or did, and I know of at least one marriage that happened between people who met on my old forum.
All I want to do is inspire people to do awesome things, and make a positive difference whenever I can, so when I meet someone who has been inspired or something like that, it rules.
Will you do a Q&A about your experience on working on the The Guild too?
I don't have time right now, but at some point in the Mysterious Future, yes.
Hey Wil, please check on something I heard about and let us know the answer. There is supposedly an initial, never-aired BBT pilot that featured an “evil Penny” with a different actress than Katie. Please let the powers that be know that we geeks want that on YouTube or as a bonus ep on the next DVD set !!! Evil Wil is awesome, glad you’re becoming an icon in the BBT universe.
Kinda backwards from usual, eh? 😉
I’m not sure what it is about Wesley that’s so irritating to most people, but now that I’m older I find myself wanting to throw him out the airlock. Still think it woulda been funny if you’d done a cameo as a Cylon on Galactica while they were throwing ’em out 😉
When this episode first aired it was the first time I had seen BigBangTheory and I became completely caught up in it(as I am a huge nerd and love all of the extreme geeky jokes). When I found out they were reairing this episode I got my parents to watch. They were huge trek fans back in the O.S and T.N.G era. They absolutely loved it. They were reluctant to watch BBT to begin with and now they are hooked. They loved seeing you in the role of evil wil. We cannot wait until the next episode airs on 4/12.
