Yesterday, the final two T-shirts in the first round of my collaborations with Jinx were released.
First up, Marshmallow Meeps!
Like Rules Lawyers, this idea amused me greatly, and I was shocked to discover that someone hadn't done this already. Maybe it's too small a slice of overlap in the Venn Diagram, but I think it'll be pretty popular with the people who get it. I couldn't come up with a description for this, so Jinx did this, which I think is appropriately cute:
Always in season, these tasty marshmallow treats are not to be consumed until all tiles have been placed and all scores are tallied. Low in calories but packed with win, MEEPS are guaranteed to occupy your territories and satisfy your sweet tooth. A fat free gaming piece brought to you by Wil Wheaton and the folks at J!NX.
The last shirt we did is my favorite of the whole batch. Behold, the WWdN:iX family crest!
This wasn't originally in the 8-bit style, but Sean at Jinx thought it would be cool, since their artist Chris Hope does a lot of 8-bit designs. I wasn't sure it would work … right up until the moment I saw it, and realized that it couldn't be done any other way. If enough people ask, we could probably make this into a sticker, or a hat.
The description I wrote for it amuses me:
The actual Wheaton family crest, while historically accurate, isn’t all that awesome, and while it probably reflected something relevant to my ancestors, it feels … well, dated by about 800 years.
So I asked myself one day, “if I could make a coat of arms for my little portion of the internet – my kingdom, I guess you could all it – what would it look like?”
The motto came to me instantly: “Don’t Be A Dick!” The rest followed quickly, representing the load-bearing pillars of my existence: science, gaming, Sci-Fi, and writing. We wrapped up the whole thing in a classic 8-bit package, and the WWdN Coat of Arms was born.
All my designs are available in basic, women's, and premium (which is a softer fabric, usually American Apparel, with a slimmer cut) and in sizes from S-2XL.
In case you missed them, the other two designs are both RPG-related: My Sword Glows Blue in the Presence of Rules Lawyers, and Never Forget Your Roots.
I will admit I’m at a bit of loss with the first one.
Love the 8-bit crest.
I didn’t get the first reference either.
Most definately need a sticker for the WWdN Coat of Arrrrms!
Love both of those, fantastic! Now when is the “Rudy the Undead Hound” shirt being released? 😉
“Ru-Ru-Ru-Ruuuuuuudy!”
Family Crest = Coolest…shirt…EVER!!! 🙂
I’m sure this is by design, but I absolutely adore the fact that the crest is also a compass: the black boxes inform the gray with a vertical dominance.
In other words – Science vertically connects with sci-fi, which is created from a mix with the writing arts (i.e. the quill – going horizontal).
Ergo SCIENCE + _writing arts_ = sci-fi
Conversely – Writing arts vertically connects with video game scripting/which is created from science (horizontally.)
Ergo WRITING ARTS + _science_ = video gaming
With a d20 to rule them all.
Your aim, sir, is impossibly true.
You just blew my mind.
Ah now, I do remember Rudy. Maybe meeps is also from the PA DnD podcast and I’ve just forgotten about it.
Aoefel lives.
Can anyone here translate that motto into Latin for us, please? And yes, the t-shirt’s on my “want” list. Good work!
Oh, and for those of you wondering, the Meeps are from Carcassonne, but I always think of those little pom pom guys from Quest for Glory.
Now I won’t!
I’m pretty sure this is the crest that Scalzorc stole from you, inspiring the now-famous, well-documented and (now, with visual confirmation of the pilfered booty) completely justified retribution.
Really: well done, Wil. I can’t say enough about the design.
Hah, of course. Thanks!
The latin is, I think, “operor non exsisto a penis” but it might be better translated into Klingon.
When I saw it first, I was happy to note that it wasn’t translated into latin. I’m not sure why. Maybe because the motto matters, and it would be a little pretentious (and dissonant) to have to explain the latinate suggestion to not be a dick.
Wow. This the most I’ve ever written or thought in my entire life about a t-shirt.
I think it should get its own television series.
See, I’m thinking the latin would be a Good Thing™ because “Don’t Be a Dick” is such an ancient, universal & classical concept.
I’m also stumped trying to recall what the latin joke was in Eric Idle’s “Road to Mars”… was “He who smelt it, dealt it?” or “Fuck’em if they can’t take a joke?” (Of which, I prefer the corollary: “Joke’em if they can’t take a fuck”, but that’s just me…)
The bite out of the Meep should have been beak-shaped.
I also think the motto should be in Latin, for while I heartily agree with it, I would never wear a shirt with the word “dick” on it.
Yay, I can finally post comments again. I’m not sure if this was an issue with typepad (after login, a page with some script would be displayed, after reload the blog page showed up but without an option to comment. Or it could have been the German ISP I used for the last week via an UMTS USB stick.
Anyway, yay for the crest, it is truly awesome.
Love the Family crest. I will be getting that one and then hope to get it signed someday. Great job on all of the designs.
The family crest is awesome. I’d love to see it on a sticker, or even a magnet. Yes, I think this would look quite snazzy on my fridge between the robot and the superhero librarian magnets.
Family Crest shirt=AWESOME! It’s one of those shirts, when someone is acting like a total ***, you can just point to your phrase while looing at them, then walk on. Will def be getting one. =]
I’ll put in a vote for the crest as a sticker and/or magnet.
These are really great shirts, Wil.
Just ordered a WW Family Crest shirt. I’m hoping it arrives in time for SD w00tstock!
The Crest is AWESOME!!!
It is only topped by the one my wife did for herself (okay, not really, but as a loving husband I have to say that… right?) since she runs Scheduled Games for a local sci-fi/fantasy convention in our area.
I’d certainly love to see yours done as a patch, sticker or something that could be put onto a jacket or coffee thermos.
Lovely! I really enjoyed all of the shirts, but the crest one is my favorite! I do believe I must have one of those.
Also, because I’ve been away from teh internets for a while: I would buy a short fiction collection, and I’m watching both Leverage (new fan via Netflix – great show!) and The Guild (old fan via the internets). Just to be clear.
In addition to being Wil’s editor, wielder of the Red Pen Of Doom, I was also a Latin teacher in a former life. (Truefact!)
Noli mentula esse.
You’re welcome.
Fantastic shirts!
Grabbed the Carcassonne app the other day. It’s pretty. I haven’t played much yet, but what I have played has filled me with the joy of meeps, indeed.
Thank you! Ever considered a career in heraldry? 🙂
Methinks you’ll need to put it in Klingon or Latin to get it on BBT !
On second thoughts I can’t actually work out whether it should be on BBT.
I definitely need the crest on a sticker for my car. It’d be perfect between my 1up mushroom and Optimus Prime. 🙂 But in the mean time I shall content myself with the tee! Awesome-sauce!
Okay, I know your family crest says not to be a dick, but I feel compelled to ask: You are, by virtue of who you are, marketing primarily to the Geek crowd, and yet your shirt sizes only go up to 2X? And no Talls?? You, sir, are discriminating against a non-zero (well … at least ONE, anyway) population of tall and/or husky geeks out there! Shame, Whil Wheaton …. SHAAAAAME!!!!! Cool designs, btw!
OMG WIL WHEATON if you feel like it isn’t too much I am promoting this young Con, primarily anime but with other things as well, E-Ville Con. I was hoping you could ask your friends to check out our site evillecon.com. Since I am in Charge of Online Ads it would be a Boon to have someone of your Caliber promote this Con. This is of course only if you feel like it is worth the time. You may dislike Anime but I just thought I ask. Also we are going to have D&D! *happy dancing bunny dance*> Here is the video link: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=627910989763&subj=58215326&oid=265035956985
Oh boy. Do want. Can no has. No monies until after book comes out. This will be in the shop for a while, y/y?
The crest immediately makes me think of the title screen from King’s Quest I (I think it’s the lettering and the way the scrolls wind around), and for that, I’m pretty sure I love it forever. Well done.
Will this simple MUST be done in Latin. A couple online translators (for the ghetto in all of us) reveals a very simple attempt can go horribly wrong. Take the time to ask a professor at a local college or a friend.
As a side note, mine ended up:
Exsisto non a gallo
I would totes buy a crest hat.
family crest sticker, please! i’d love to drive the motto around PDX 🙂
Epic!
What do you think about these http://www.80stees.com/pages/t-shirts/Big-Bang-Theory-t-shirts.asp?referer=fb-wes-crush
I love the crest, but I have an odd question. What size shirt do you wear? I got permission today from John Scalzi to make you a shirt mentioning items from Old Man’s War, and I don’t want to get one that’s too small, because it will be bad ass. See you at PAX!!!
I would buy a crest sticker. It is amazingly epic.
Awesome coat of arms! Speaking of rules lawyers and neepery, I did my best to blazon it:
Quarterly sable, argent, bordure or, First a Rutherford model of 3 electrons gules orbits argent, Second an Atari 2600 controller proper, Third a 50’s raygun sinister gules, Fourth an ink bottle and quill proper. Over the crest of a dodecahedron gules enumbered 20 argent, mantled or, a banner: WWdN:iX. Motto: Don’t be a dick.
And I can think of at least one x-mas present filled with that Meeps shirt. Fantastic!
First: hopefully the little bit of html I stuck in here fixes the italics issue. Not that there’s anything wrong with italicizing things but to me italics always scream “this is more important than everything else!” and okay, maybe some Commentors wanted it to look that way. In which case my html is superfluous. Oh well 🙂
But for my REAL comment: I am in love with the crest. And the mind blowingness of the comments about it. I hope you will keep these shirts around for a while because while I’d love to buy mine right away I need some time to scrape up some extra cash for fun things. 🙂
Agreed.
I am sorry, but anyone who didn’t get the meeple reference must cut one corner off their geek card.
Does anyone know the difference between the standard and premium tee?
The difference is defined by Wil himself in the post. Do I get my corner of my geek card put back on since I actually read posts before commenting on them? 🙂
Touché, I’ll go get some tape.
I’m just an occasional visitor, but every time I do come I wonder “isn’t it time to drop the “in exile” part?”
From the most recent post on WWdN “WWdN will be re-launched very, very soon.”, which was 4 years ago.
Just curious, the “iX” part of the “family crest” made me finally ask the question.
This is my first time here, and i am not going to pretend that i know anything that i don’t. i had seen you on star trek, but very rarely cause i don’t really watch it. i saw you on the guild, which i have just now started watching in the last few weeks. so yes, i am a newbie when it comes to you, wil wheaton. but. i want you to know this. i love how you write, your writing is extremely inviting and it’s very easy to follow along, which alot of people are not able to do nowadays. i think you are extremely talented as an actor, not to mention, extremely attractive 😀 geez, i sound like every other freakin fan out there. i’m sorry about that. what i mean to say, is this, your adorable, sexy and talented. and i hope great things for your life. that’s all.
Sonya
Is there a PG-13 version that doesnt use a double negative? LOL
I really like the Peeps shirt 😉
You could also do one of those Chuck Norris type shirts. Call it
SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WIL WHEATON:
1. Wil doesn’t speak directly to you, he twitters and expects that you follow his feed.
2. When Wil played goalie, he allowed goals in because he felt sorry for the shooter.
3. If Wil’s life was a TV series, he would play himself AND the “wacky next-door neighbor” character.
4. Wil has never shot a man in Reno just to watch him die, but he has run over a squirrel and then hit it with a shovel to put it out of its misery.
5. Wil is so confident, he started his playoff beard *last year*.
6. Wil’s diet consists solely of Red Vines and Jose Cuervo.
7. Wil’s role on Star Trek was autobiographical.
8. Wil doesn’t sleep, he writes.
9. One weekend a year Wil is known as Trixie Devine. But only to perfect strangers.
10. Wil doesn’t get angry, he makes random appearances in webcomics belittling your performance in bed.
