"If it's true about there being no rest for the wicked, then I must have been very naughty indeed." –Charlie Stross
Yes, I just compared myself to Charlie Stross. It must be the coffee and lack of sleep talking. Go me.
I leave for JoCo Cruise Crazy in just a few days, so I've been too busy preparing to do anything here on the old bloggy-blog-bloggity-blog, but I wanted to take a moment to remind all interested parties that there is just one day left to get a print copy of The Day After And Other Stories.
I'm thrilled and delighted that The Day After and Other Stories has sold as well as it has, and I'm relieved and excited to hear such good feedback from so many readers. Writing fiction still feels a little strange, and actually publishing it still scares the shit out of me, but having faced it once now and returned relatively unscathed, it probably won't be quite as scary the next time.

Wil, I anticipate my 2 copies will arrive any time now (one for me and one for a friend).
How many have sold thus far?
Thx for the reminder, Wil. Took that last chance and ordered a copy, although the shipping to continental Europe is a bit hefty. Whatever it takes to have “the complete works of Wil Wheaton” on the shelf. 😉
So this is a geek cruise or W00tstock on a boat? Wow. I’ve heard of GothCruise but not GeekCruise. ;o) That sounds like a lot of fun.
I got the PDF yesterday but haven’t had time to read because DeathSpank has been eating my laptop time. Damn that little Dispenser of Justice…
I ordered my copy just now and look forward to reading it when it arrives 3-5 days after 3-5 days.
🙂
I love [Teh Internets] you ask them for something and they bring it to you…
Shipping is the big problem with Lulu. Especially with small paperbacks, shipping is often a third of the item price, while sending a parcel with similar weight by regular mail would be a lot less.
For example, in the UK, shipping is 2.99 and it shouldn’t be more than £1.
It gets better when you order multiple copies or books.
Have fun in Ft. Lauderdale…Make sure you get yourself some Anthony’s Coal-Fired Pizza, there’s one near the port.
I guess Wil’s too modest to mention that the cruise features “music and comedy performances from [some other dudes and] Wil Wheaton…”
Luckily, the ship is one big hotspot, so Wil can stay in touch. (“If he has the time, Doctor. If he has the time.”)
Day two: Haven’t received my print copy of TDA yet. May be forced to read lesser prose.

I met Charlie Stross and Justina Robinson at Beneluxcon october 30th. There were about 40 people, so you really had the time to talk with them. Had some great conversations. I haven’t sampled you fiction writing yet but at least personality-wise, you can sit write with them. Seeing your writing skills, I don’t see a problem there either.
LOL, OK Wil, what is your next on your list of phobias that we can make you face?
As Nietzsche says: That which does not kill us makes us stronger.
Can’t wait to get it….I have enjoyed all of your books, and this one is sure to be another favorite. I am just waiting for when you start your own line of comic books….now, that would be AWESOME!
Happy new year 🙂
Yea yea, I know
“Blow it out your ass Howard.”
My copy should be here this week, I hope. And if I ever find a job I’m going to be getting some (all?) of your other works.
Just got my copy in today. I’m trying to save it for the 1st so I can use it for my 52 books in a year thing that I’m gonna try to do, but I can’t guarantee I won’t read it tomorrow by accident.
I have some friends going on the JoCo cruise for their Honeymoon. I’m a little jealous; it sounds like it’s going to be a great time.
See you on the boat! Glad you’re really sailing, you haven’t blogged/tweeted much about it!
Hey Wil, I just finished TDA & OS and I freakin loved it. Room 302 was my favorite; I love stories that let my imagination fill in the blanks. I am curious as to how other readers interpreted the story. I wonder if they would have interpreted it differently if it had been the first story in the book. I don’t want to spoil it so I won’t say too much, but I had a “Caprica” moment when I read 302. So this is where the first story began … 30 or 40 years prior. Thank you for saying just enough to let me finish that story for you 🙂
The Language Barrier reminded me of a writing exercise I used to do during undergrad. I’d go to a public place and look around for someone interesting, and then I’d force myself to write for 5 minutes about that character. I’d create back-stories and dialogues with other 5 minute characters. It was a good practice.
I totally identified with Tim being pissed off in TDA. Loved the story, but more than anything else I was just feeling Tim being pissed off. Nice job on the character work there.
Anyway, great stuff. An absolute privilege, thank you for publishing it.
My two copies just arrived today! I’m giving one as a gift and keeping the other for my son.
Thanks, Whil!
Wil,
Another book and many satisfied customers. You really have talent for writing, as well. Congrats on your latest book. Also have a Happy and safe New Year!

I agree with you. I felt Room 302 was the best short story.
Of course I am not trying to imply any of them were sub-par. All of them were good, but Room 302 was just superb in grabbing my attention and wanting me to know more. I was amazed how much the story drew me in with just a page and a half. I love the last line. It is the type of line you might hear every day in normal conversation, but at the end of this story, it struck a deep felt reaction from me. Don’t want to elaborate too much because I don’t want to spoil it for those who have not read it yet.
Good stuff, and hopefully more to come!
Hi, new to your blog, sucks that I’ve missed so much (due to being unaware of your blog) because it’s amazing, can’t get off of it. Purchased ‘Just A Geek” today. Again, I’m fairly behind, oh well. Updated now. Just wanted to say your podcasts and posts are really moving. After a crappy day at work, it makes me smile.

Dooood, man I wish I had heard about the cruise. My wife loves going on cruises and it would be a great chance to go on one and see the limited Wootstock experience. I left from that port on my last two cruises. Ah well maybe next time…if we get more notice :).
Wil, I was reading through Shel Silverstein’s “Falling Up” when I came across a poem entitled “Writer Waiting”. It made me think of you and all your struggles as a writer. So I thought I would send it your way and I hope that you continue to write your books are awersome.
Writer Waiting
Oh this shiny new computer—
There just isn’t nothin’ cuter.
It knows everything the world ever knew.
And with this great computer
I don’t need no writin’ tutor,
‘Cause there ain’t a single thing that it can’t do.
It can sort and it can spell,
It can punctuate as well.
It can find and file and underline and type.
It can edit and select,
It can copy and correct,
So I’ll have a whole book writtne by tonight
(Just as soon as it can think of what to write).
Here is another poem from the same book dedicated to your brain and any other body part you like to have conversations with lol.
Body Language
Said my feet,”Hey, let’s go dancin’.”
Said my tongue,”Let’s have a snack.”
Said my brain,”Let’s read a good book.”
Said my eyes'”Let’s take a nap.”
Said my legs,”Let’s just go walkin’.”
Said my back,”Let’s take a ride.”
Said my seat,”Well, I’ll just sit right here,
‘Til all of you decide.”
“Oh how I’ve realized, how I wanted time
Put into perspective, tried so hard
to find
Just for one moment I thought
I’d got my way
Destiny unfolded–
I watched it slip away”
Good one. I may not have gotten the new story collection yet but I share many of your musical influences. Your musical cues are a Division above many other popular internet personalities.
And you make rather enjoyable t-shirts.
From time to time.
Good luck on the new book, sir.
