I'm going to be on JoCo Cruise Crazy until January 8. I thought it was kind of important to stay connected, keep Twittering and blogging and Internetting while I was on a boat, but after much deliberation, decided that I will not be purchasing Holland America's Yes, We Use The Whole Fist internet package.
I'm not going to lie to you, Marge: the idea of no internet for a whole week makes me a little twitchy, but it's been a really hectic end of the year, and I think that I'll enjoy myself a heck of a lot more if I stay offline, read books, play games, enjoy the time with my family, and get my geek on at every opportunity.
One final thought before I sign off: I looked at my desk a couple nights ago, and told Anne, "I sat there for months and wrote Dancing Barefoot and Just A Geek. That's where I started my blog, and built my first website." I paused for a moment, because I felt a lump rising in my throat. "Remember how frustrated and scared I was ten years ago? How hard I was struggling?"
"Yeah," she said, quietly.
"I don't want to be all 'hey, look how great I am,' but I'm so grateful that my hard work finally paid off."
She put her arms around my waist and kissed me. "Me too."
I held her for a second. "It all started right here. Isn't that weird?"
"I don't think it's weird. I think it's kind of awesome."
I kissed her face and she kissed me back.
2010 was easily the best year I've had in a decade, and 2011 is looking like it's going to be pretty amazing, too. So happy new year to you all, and thank you for reading my blog and my books, watching me on TV, interacting with me on Twitter, and just being part of this incredible chapter in my life.
Happy New Year, everyone! Talk to you in a week.

as a man who has taken many a cruise, and never bought the Fist, trust me on this one:
when you get back to your RSS reader, click “Mark all as Read” – don’t even think about it, just do it. you’ll die a little inside, but better a little death than the full insanity of skimming so much backlog.
Hey Wil! I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time now, and this is the first time I’ve posted. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy it, how cool I think it is that you’re as down to earth and “real” as you are. Keep up the good work and enjoy your cruise (totally jealous, yes I am). Looking forward to 2011 and seeing what goodness you put out. Have fun!
Wil,
What a jolt! I’ve been reading your blog since (around) 2003, when it was wilwheaton.net. I still have the original blinking button on my old, orphaned website. I’ve enjoyed following your progress to improve as an artist – expand your reach, the type of projects you try – and have been grateful that you’ve shared. You probably won’t be able to find time to read these comments, but I thought I’d post anyway. Thanks for the memories.
Happy New Year, Wil. Enjoy the cruise.
Happy New Year! I’m jealous!! Thanks for being the coolest dork in the world. :o)
Stepping away from the Internets is hard…but rewarding. The Dot and I were out beyond the End of Time in New Mexico this past summer and it was liberating to be unconnected to anyone other than each other (awwwww….).
Have fun. Make sure you wear sunscreen. Smile at the nice people!
hey Wil Wheaton! I don’t know you personally, but you inspire me so much and I love reading your blog. I’m 20, and you’ve reminded me not to grow up too fast and to really indulge in what you love (as long as you also work hard!), and how important my friends and family are. You probably won’t read this comment because it will be buried under a 100 other comments, but just know you’ve totally been one of the inspirations for some random girl in Texas to live her life in the best way possible! Go you, and I hope your 2011 is even better than your 2010.
Happy New Years 🙂
Absolutely spend your time with your friends and family. Your dedication to stay connected to your internet fans is awesome, but taking time for yourself is a must, so I wish you a lovely time on the cruise and a happy new year!
xx J
Happy New Year!
Oh, your picture is messed up by the way… *snicker*
Transporter accident on that hand? I bet the Weasley’s could fix that with a wave of the wand!
Happy New Year! Enjoy the internet-free time. It’s so worth it – I’m as addicted as anyone, but I can’t stand the thought of being online during a vacation. Have fun!
Dude! You’re an overnight success! *ducking and running*
2010 was your breakout year, and you’ve worked hard for it. I was at w00tstock PDX–that was five hours of hard work for everyone, even the audience (but the most fun hard work ever)! I hope 2011 brings you back to PDX for moar Leverage and another w00tstock, though I’m not sure my heart could take another five hours of laughing that hard again…
Happy New Year! Have a fabulous time on your cruise! Don’t worry, the Internet will still be here when you get back. I think taking a break from it will be a Very Good Thing. And your wife is right–it is kind of awesome. All that hard work and staring your fears down is paying off–congratulations!
Wil,
As a fellow geek and semi-regular traveler, I feel your pain and think the prices charged for Internet access are criminal. But enjoy your digital sabbatical! Occasionally it’s okay to leave broadcast level and spend quality time with the crew. I know all your readers are looking forward to hearing of your adventures, so make the best of it!
I’m about halfway into your reading of Just A Geek, and I just want to let you know that we are just as grateful that your hard work has paid off. I am personally thankful that you have not only embraced the geekiness, but learned to revel in it, because your words — from books to blogs to PAX speeches on the wonders of the arcades of yore — have helped me immensely to finally feel comfortable in my own geeky skin. A few days ago I was Googling Eureka, and I came across the headline “Geek superstar Wil Wheaton moves to Syfy’s Eureka”. The first thought that came to my mind was ” Yeah, Superstar. Now he can tell that b*tch at Hooters to get stuffed.”
Happy new year to you and your family. Don’t forget your pashmina afghan.
Awww… you should have chosen the box! Now you’ll never know what was in it! It could have even been a boat!!
Congrats on all that work paying off, Mr. Wheaton, SIR! I missed seeing the earliest beginnings of your growth from an actor to a writer, but it’s been great watching as you worked through the past ten years to develop your skills and confidence.
Have a great 2011!
Don’t worry Wil, speaking as a fellow JoCoCruiseCrazeliac, I opted for the Fist. I’m still a little sore but since I’m splitting the cost with some friends, it’s not to bad. I’m willing to share a few precious minutes if you want to sneak out a quick blog post or two, or download some mail.
Just let me know. See you on the boat! You’ll recognize me. I’ll be the thirty something geek who works in IT and is wearing a really funny t-shirt.
Amy and I were just on a cruise this past weekend. The weather was terrible. You’ve chosen much more wisely than we.
The internet thing was weird, but man, it was nice. Not checking email, Twitter, etc., while we were way too far away from shore to get a signal.
Hope you got the Xmas card from us at FFG before you left, and be sure to check out Joe Scrimshaw and Bill Corbett while you’re ON A BOAT.
Your blog is what makes my day go right. Thank you for being the awesome that you are, and giving the world sooo many wonderful stories from your brilliant writing. I wish for You and Anne to have a very, very blessed and safe 2011! Have a great trip, Wil. 🙂
Happy New Year and Happy cruise, Wil and Anne! As much as I’ve always been a Wesley-hater, I’m so glad I discovered you as a real person this year. i feel like my life has been enriched in ways I was unaware of before. Thank you for that!
Thanks for putting words to the random examples of bravery we all have to rise to in our lives. If only because I’m a social creature and like to know I’m not alone.
Which is to say as someone self-employed, I can commiserate with you on the crisis of faith of being forced to build something out of nothing. It’s a smidge daunting sometimes.
Merry New Year, Wil. Enjoy it.
2010 was ‘unexpected’ in a lot of ways. It was a joy from a Wil Wheaton standpoint, though. May you, Anne and the entire family have an excellent New Year. Have a great cruise too!
🙂
Scott
Happy New Year! May your success of 2010 continue on in 2011. I look forward to watching more of your guest appearances on some of the best TV shows currently in production.

No Internet for a week! OMG
No seriously, have a great cruise and Happy New Year! I do hope 2011 is as great as 2010
Have a good time…
Are you adding a “Year in Review?”
Hightlights of 2010:
1) Big Bang Theory
2) Star Trek Movie Voice Over
3) More acting in general
Wish you snuck in for 2010:
1) Any mention of Poker at all 😉
2) Beer Garden event in San Diego
3) Knott’s Berry Farm Report
I think your greatest strength is your ability to
post almost 52 weeks a year. Pretty unbelievable that you can be so consistent year after year 😉
This looks to be a great year ahead…it goes up to 11!
I go through that every time i go camping, but being a week without technology seems to increase my appreciation for it when i get back.
And that pic is pretty badass
The Cat is away…
Okay, he’s officially gone for the week. Let’s light this place up!
Happy New Year Wil! 2010 was truly your year. I have found much, much wisdom from your blog and seeing you in person in AZ and at w00tstock in SD. Being a geek is something to be embraced and cherished [More Band Geeks than Usual is my cover band name]!
Seeing your work on Eureka, Big Bang Theory, and The Guild is just icing on the cake!
Here’s to 2011!
Happy New Year to you and your family, have a great trip you have earned it.
Just found your great website. Just really finding my inner geekdom that always lurked. Little older then you I think. Going to miss the tweets, but then the stories will be great when you go live again! Enjoy the time with the family.
Wil, I am going to miss you as a VERY important part of my everyday Internet experience for this week. However, you deserve a super fun time.
LIVE IT UP, and then tell us all about it. : )
Please stay safe and enjoy your trip.
A whole lot of bizarre things are happening around the world right now. Birds falling from the sky and fish washing up dead in the tons. Would like to talk to you about discussing this stuff when you get back.
Hey Wil, I thought you’d like this tee shirt:

Little late for the holidays, but still applicable for your boat trip!
i’d be more impressed if you were on a horse
diamonds!
Enjoy your cruise. It sure was a very happy new year up here.

I wish you and your family the best and happiest in 2011.
Saturday February 5th Calgary Flames vs L.A. Kings.
Just remember it’s pronounced “GO FLAMES! GO!”
Lots of love and a great new year to everyone 🙂

Ouch! Pricey Pricey. Everything on a cruise is expensive because “they gotcha!”. I remember seeing film at 3x the normal cost, and memory cards (like an 8MEG CompactFlash card) at 6-8x.
Enjoy the Digital Cones of Silence….
THIS.
(did I do it right?)
Not sure what your protocalls are for stuff like this, but I thought it was a hoot. Found through Whedonesque.com of course.

if this is wrong, let me know! Shared in good humor.
Wil,
I hope you and Anne had a wonderful cruise and safe travels back home.
I discovered your blog in 2010 and reading it helped make it a wonderful year! Thank you for sharing so much of yourself.
I crochet, and when I saw the 5th picture down on this website http://www.buzzfeed.com/awesomer/nerdy-crochet-creations I knew I needed to share. The person who made them even did the rainbow sweater!
May 2011 be an even better year for you and your family!
Hi, Wil,
I just got to know that you will be in Germany at the FedCon in April/Mai. I’m really looking forward meeting you.
Did you survive the week offline? I couldn’t imagine to get offline for such a long period of time.
Cheers,
🙂 Sandra
Like Shandij, I just found out that you will be here in Germany for the FedCon. Yay!
Will you sign books? And will you be there for all four days? (I’m asking because you are the main reason for me to come ;))
Bests
Nicole
Awesome!![Photobucket](http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz146/michprnt/2-27-06147-1.jpg)
Wil,
I doubt you’ll read this, but as someone that has, in fact, been reading you for almost all 10 years, I’d just like to say: You deserve it.
Nothing but the best for you, Wil. Nothing but the best.
Thanks, Scott 🙂
I’m going to do a movie quote. I shouldn’t but…..
WE NEED A BIGGER BOAT!
In my less public life, I’m going through a rough patch now (financially and personally – and I’m not using the term ‘rough patch’ lightly). I found a rope and it gave me 2 choices: hang myself or climb up with it. The climb is going to take 5 years, I know that already. I’m climbing, if only to show my kids how it’s done. I take inspiration from many people, known and unknown. Yours is among it.
Wheaton, its been like eleventyseven days since you last posted…I am enduring severe absence of geekdom!
Get thee to a computer and transmit posthaste ye heathen! 😛
(Hope you had an awesome cruise and enjoyed your family time)
Just caught up on your blogs, and this is by far one of my favourites for a long while..
Not that the others weren’t brilliant.. but theres something inspiring, if thats the best word for it, about you being so appreciative for everything you have
You’re like my favourite celebrity and i’m glad for everything you have! 🙂
Happy new year!
It looks like you stopped yourself from breaking up your parents to win that bowling match just in time, there, Marty. WHERE DID YOUR HAND GO?
