50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

I am no longer on a boat…

  • WWdN in Exile

…but my inner ear is pretty convinced that I am. Goodtimes. Goodtimes.

Until I have enough moments in a row to reflect on and recount the amazing and wonderful time I had on #JoCoCruiseCrazy, I wanted to take a second to share the best part of the entire trip for me:

For seven days and six nautical nights, every single person who met my kids told me how much they liked Ryan and Nolan. Words like "articulate" and "polite" and "hilarious" and "awesome" were used more than once. As a father, this is the best thing I can ever hear, and I'm incredibly proud of my kids for being exactly who they are.

More to come, but probably not for a couple of days.

You and Anne take a lot of credit for that!

Wow, that really is a parent’s dream! Especially when you are on vacation and kids can get particularly crazy.

Welcome back… you’ll lose the sea-legs soon. Hearing compliments for your kids is a huge lift! Great to hear your recognition of that as best part of the trip!

I look forward to the full boat tale (sea shanty?).
Any chance you might be up for something else next month? http://www.gallifreyone.com/
I would totally pay for a one day pass for you to get you to go.

My interactions with them were limited to watching Nolan play Rock Band (taking on unoccupied instruments to fill out bands, but always willing to give one up if anyone else wanted it), and watching Ryan doing backflips on the pool deck (where someone asked him to do it over and over, before finally realizing who it was).
Oh, and Ryan got you the silver Sharpie to sign my Kindle, which *made* the entire cruise for me. 🙂
It was great to finally “meet” them, after reading/hearing so much about them!

Just got my copy of The Day After… looking forward to reading it.

Hey Wil, glad to hear that the trip was super fun. I can’t wait to hear stories from Molly! Hopefully you’ll have time to finish your updates from PAX too after you’re done with the JoCo Crazy Cruise!

Upboat for having great kids! It does take a while after being back on land for the “rockie rollies” to stop.

If your inner ear thing doesn’t let up, consider this: http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/central/mdd.html It’s possible someone in LA could help you, too, but this guy in Chicago is amazing. Plus, sometimes you feel better if you’re on another moving vehicle.
I’ve had near-constant vertigo for almost 2 years now, and Dr Hain and his staff are absolutely the best available. I hope yours just fades quickly like most people’s.

Honestly, you’re my favorite person to follow on Twitter, and my favorite of your tweets, more even than the Wil-Cat/Dog conversations, are when your kids hack your account. And then ten minutes later you tweet an indignant rage tweet.I heart Wheatons.

    Wil,
I am not lucky enough to be a parent but it looks like that it has worked out great for you. You have two great kids. I am also glad that you survived your time off of the net. At times, this seems to be a great thing to do. Nice view from the boat. Always a fun thing to do.

I went on a three-day cruise once and felt like I was on a boat for almost a week afterward. I felt that was entirely unfair. Here’s hoping your inner ear settles down faster than mine did!

    Welcome back.
Glad the 3-hour cruise worked out for you, Professor. Expecting to hear all about your sickness-avoidance-at-sea stories.
And yes, your wife and kids are amazing, and you’ve had something to do with that. That is such a good thing right there.
Oh, and Jupiter is within eyeshot of the moon these days in the Great White North… don’t suppose you got any good views out at sea?

Wil, your kids were totally awesome. And your affection for them was so heartwarming, it was just a big ol’ love-fest. Thanks for the awesome readings and all the laughs! And can I just say — you are a rockstar at the “my tribute band” game. So, so freaking funny. Those were some of my biggest laughs of the week.
Any chance you could share where you got your t-shirt that you wore at the last day’s performances… the one that was a cartoon of you, wearing a shirt that had a cartoon of you, wearing a shirt etc etc? Was that custom-made for you, or can anyone order one of themselves somewhere? 🙂
Also — if the vertigo continues – I think you can get Antivert over the counter. It was a lifesaver after a cruise I took a few years ago, it was the only thing that made the world stop tilting.

  24. Wil says:

I don't recall seeing Jupiter, but we did see a perfect Cheshire Cat moon, and a number of meteors (Anne saw an actual fireball one night) from our balcony. The neatest thing for me was being able to see Orion in an entirely different place in the sky than usual, the further South we went, and then seeing stars that are usually beneath the horizon for me when I'm at home.

Its the Wheaton Recurrence shirt. it might be at shirtwoot.com. If you don’t find it just google it. You’ll get a big bang link too. I don’t remember if it was custom or a limited edition thingy.

  26. Wil says:
    11 January, 2011 at 8:32 am

That shirt came from Basic instructions. I blogged about it here: http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/wwdnbackup/2010/04/about-that-recursive-wil-wheaton-tshirt.html
Thanks for your kind words about my sons, too. They totally don't suck, huh?

I hope you had the presence of mind to avoid calling any bartenders on board Isaac but called the Purser Gopher.
my lottery earnings came while you were away. I think the best part for me was the letter. No one ever thinks to tell us what the photos are when they do a montage and it always kind of frustrates me.
I work with two other Trek/Wheaton fans and you’d think I’d walked in with the Ark of the Covenant or something. And we all got a kick out of me being 6 of 9. Aside from the obvious Borg reference… it’s totally in my numerologic wheelhouse. It’s one of the best stories in my life and I will enjoy telling it for years to come.

So glad you had a good time! After our Alaskan cruise, my husband and I had to get used to sleeping without the rocking of the boat. The real fun was getting up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Sleepiness and cruise-headedness don’t mix!

Hello Seamonkey! Plane fatigue plus sealegs = staggering! The cruise was *brilliant*. So good.

Hi Wil, I was constantly clicking ‘refresh’ from the 8th to see if you had a made a post, only because I wanted my post to be at the top somewhere – more chance of you reading it. But I live in the UK, so the time difference meant I missed your post. I was was going to ask if you ever come to the UK for appearances etc? It’s a long shot I know. I would just kill for an autograph.

I haven't gone to the UK for a show in about 14 years, but I'm going to be at Fedcon in Germany this year (it's not the UK, but it's closer than the USA! Yay!)

  32. JodieFunnell says:
    11 January, 2011 at 11:29 am

Damn that was a quick reply. 🙂
Don’t quite think I’ll make it to Germany but no worries, totally wrapped up in your books and blog, and PS – You have quite a large fan base over here in the UK solely for your writing. 🙂

Parent to two young kiddos as well. Raising polite kids is quite an accomplishment. Enjoy!

  34. JodieFunnell says:

I’ve been worrying about this for hours.
When I said “solely on writing” it was meant to mean that, you will always have a large trekkie fan base, but now you have a large fan base for your writing too. It wasn’t meant to sound like I wasn’t a fan of your acting.I probably didn’t affend you, but it’s playing on my mind so just wanted to clear it up and put my mind at ease.
    Acting & Writing is AWESOME!

I wasn't offended at all, and it's really nice to know that there are people who appreciate what I'm doing *now*, in addition to what I did so long ago.

People say similar things about my kids, but I also hear a lot of “hyper” and “grumpy” and “soft”. Alas, that’s what happens when your wife personifies our pets as children.
Unfortunately a hedgehog, a rabbit and a dog do not a fun cruise make.

I jet-skied with one of them at Half Moon Cay (not sure which, didn’t know who they were at the time). Seemed nice, he liked my nerd shirt 🙂
The jet-skiing was an enormous amount of fun, by the way, as was the cruise of course (except for those vendors in Ocho Rios).

  38. Wil says:
    12 January, 2011 at 8:11 am

That was Nolan. He had so much fun Jet Skiing, I think he wants to be a Jet Ski when he grows up.
I agree with you about Ocho Rios. I've concluded that it is the Mos Eisley of the Caribbean.

The pesterment there *does* give me a little flavor of how annoying Tier-1 celebrity must be, as I said.

Those comments just prove that biology has nothing to do with being a father. Not ripping on their biological father of course, but you have helped raise those two boys to be great men. You should be proud of that, which I’m sure you are.
