During w00tstock last week, I mentioned that I was turning 38 this week.
After the show, Anne told me that I was, in fact, turning 39. In the few seconds that it took me to do some math, I lost a year of my life.
Apparently, this is the sort of thing that happens when you get to be my age, which is … 39.
So happy birthday to me, NASA, Geddy Lee, and everyone else who was born on July 29th, especially those of us who escaped from our mothers in 1972.

Happy Birthday Wil, my best wishes for you today. Are you going to be at GenCon this year? If so I’ll buy you a belated birthday beer. And as for turning 40 next year, don’t sweat it. As TV has recently told me (and I know TV never lies) 40 is the new 20.
Happy Birthday, sir. I hope your fam and friends make it a memorable one for you! (in a good way)
I like Jeffrey’s assertion that we should be counting it in hex. I’m gonna use that one from now on..
Happy Birthday, Wil! At least you’re not in a toll booth on the Kansas Turnpike today…
Happiest of birthdays, Wil! The missus and I are hoping to see you at Dragon*Con!

Welcome to the Age of Forgetting How Old You Are!!
I think part of it is that it doesn’t matter anymore, but also that there have been SO VERY MANY ages in your life, you have trouble remembering which one it was – “Maybe I’m 22; I was 22 for a whole year that one time. Nah, not 22 that was a long time ago. I must be 27. Wait, what year is it? So let’s see, borrow the one and subtract…What’s 11 minus 2? What’s 10 minus 7? Wait, did I count the extra? Where’s my calculator…”
This is the mental conversation I have in the 3 seconds between when someone asks how old I am and when I answer, usually with the wrong number.
Happy Birthday to you have a good day
Wishing you a most Fabulous Birthday Wil, and many more to come.
Happy birthday, sir. It does my heart good to know that you’ll always be 353 days older than I am.
Every year, you post your birthday post and it reminds me that I’m 3 years older than you.
Dangit, way to get my hopes up. If you would be 38 on your BDay, I would only be 28 on mine in a couple weeks (tangent: Holy shit…a couple weeks! Noooooo!). I don’t want to be 29. 🙁
Also: Happy Birthday 😀
I turned 39 in June. It was…disconcerting. Hope it turns out to be a good year for you.
Epic clown sweater is epic, yet Spock is still not impressed!
Happy Birthday! My little sis shares your day of escaping the womb, so it’s easy for me to remember my favorite (ok, second fave after my hubby I guess) nerd’s birthday. Hope it’s wonderful, and clown-free!
Happy Birthday.
My 40th birthday is on this tuesday. Thank you for being awesome and sharing it with me (and everyone else).
Being just a year older than you I relate very well to many of your stories, because they are also my stories. Growing up with Star Wars and Star Wars Toys, going to actual video arcades. These are the same things I did as I was growing up.
For a long time I was a Wesley Crusher hater, but now that I have gotten to know the person (even if just through reading your blog, and 30 seconds at Gen Con last year) rather than the character I look back and actually enjoy many of the Wesley episodes. I am also now a Leverage addict, and will probably go back and start watching Eureka from the beginning. I also strive to not be a dick, although it is hard sometimes.
Thank you for teaching me to be a better person. I hope you have many more very Happy Birthdays.
Happy Birthday!
… and at least your not 40 yet 🙂

Many happy returns!
Happy Birthday!
If someone needs a last minute gift maybe you could give them a hint?

Happy Birthday Wil! I’m looking forward to the next 38, no 39 years of unfiltered awesome!
As my friends and I like to say:
“Happy 10th Anniversary of your 29th birthday!”
From a girl who’s been a fan since ST:TNG!
Happy Birthday, Wil!
And remember, age is just a number and keeping the inner child alive a wise decision to make! 🙂
Happy Birthday to Us! You and I have the same birthday, which I’m sure you were dying to know. 😉 So, you, me, Mussolini, Geddy Lee and Peter Jennings. Interesting mix, there. 🙂 Make it a good one!

Happy birthday from someone who’s exactly 7 days older than you!
Happy 39th birthday! =) Have a great day.
Happy Birthday to both of us again! I wish I could lose a year (or two). I’m 45!
I did this same thing at 33. Or so I thought.. I was informed by my S.O. at the time that I was in fact 34.
Well.. I will go with glass half-empty today.. I am sorry you lost a year.
Happy Birthday!
A little bit of a new fan. I just finished listening to Just A Geek, and it was AWESOME!
Have the happiest of Happies!
I had a similar moment a month ago on my 38th birthday. I realized I was closer to 40 than I was to 30. I then remembered celebrating my mother’s 38th birthday and a momentary time paradox loop was created. I’m still trapped somewhere in the aftermath. 🙂
Hey, you’re only as old as they’ll let you be. 🙂 Enjoy your Wombic Emergence Day. 😀
Happy Birthday, Wil!!! I routinely forget how old I am; I think it’s mostly from disbelief. I hope you have a wonderful day! My dad turns 80 on Sunday so I’m headed up to Portland for the big party.
Happy birthday Wil. Keep inspiring us 🙂
Happy belated Birthday Wil! Read Just a Geek years ago and well just recently and finally bought it last week. So Happy Birthday. Yeah I’m gonna be 38 this October and the years catch up on ya don’t they? the thing is if you’re young at heart the years don’t matter. how’s the beer making going? oh next comic con if you wanna hang out and not be noticed, dress up I saw that Adam Savage from Mythbusters did it. Take care man.
Happy birthday Wil! Party it up! You’re only 39 once in a lifetime!
Happy birthday Wil!
Don’t feel bad – every year around my birthday I have to stop, think about how old my brother is, and calculate to figure out how old I’m turning…Age is all relative anyway! Happy Birthday!!
Happy BDay, Wil. May this next year bring you Happiness, great friends, good health, and prosperity. If you come up to ECCC next year, look into having dinner at AFK Tavern in Everett. Cool gaming restaraunt / tavern.
Happy birthday Wil! Enjoy your ‘Oh my God I am almost FORTY’ day!
May your birthday be filled with awesome people and good beer! Is your homebrew ready yet?
Happy Birthday indeed, Wes..er I mean Wil! 🙂
I see that someone has BOLDLY gone where others have gone here….tee hee. 😉
Habby Birfday!
I would laff loud & long @ your new oldness if I wasn’t way older than you. Have a happy!
Happy 25th Birthday!
When my husband turned 33 (some time ago), a friend of ours asked, “Ah. That’s the point where you start forgetting how old you are.” We didn’t believe her until he had to start doing the math from 1970. I hit that point at 34.
And also, Happy Birthday, and Happy Rain Day! It’s a holiday in my hometown.

Happy Birthday Wil! After all this time I didn’t think the sweater pic could possibly get any funnier. I was wrong. (Of course, I also did not think the stainless steel toilets at the good old DNA Lounge could possibly get any colder, and I was wrong about that…)
Enjoy your day, I hope it is nothing less than completely fantastic! 🙂
Happy Birthday Wil,
I too was born in 72, and did the exact same math problem you did.
Continue to be you, and roll 20s
Happy Happy Birthday! Keep being an awesome geek ambassador/spokesperson/godemporer/etc!
Happy Birthday, Wil! Hope you have a great birthday.
My boyfriend is the same way, always forgetting his age. I’m like his walking calendar, remembering birthdays, ages, and anniversaries for him. 🙂
I prefer the lush, glorious beard!
Happy birthday, Wil! Thank you for 39 years of awesome!
Happy Birthday Wil! Wait till your over 50 and you start losing birthdays on purpose.
Well how about that, I just turned 38 this month and I always would have thought you were younger than me. Oh well, best wishes old man!
Happy birthday Wil! Long time reader, first time poster, looking forward to Dragon*Con!!
