50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

so this is the new year

Posted on 2 January, 2006 By Wil

Happy 2006, everyone!

Anne, the kids, and I spent the day on New Year’s Eve with all of my friends, playing nerdy games (Frank’s Zoo is one of my new favorites) and eating all sorts of awesome food, because several of my friends have developed a passion of cooking in the last few years — if you can convince your friends to fall in love with cooking, go for it. Trust me, I know what I’m taking about. Then we headed home, (to beat traffic, rain and drunks) and rang in the new year by playing the Pop Culture edition of Trivial
Pursuit (it’s really fun, and the easiest of all the Trivial Pursuit
variants, IMHO) while Ferris and Riley tried to figure out just why the
hell we weren’t in bed, yet.

Yesterday, Ryan and I spent much of the day watching the Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi. Gods, I love the Twilight Zone. I love it that I can count on every episode to either terrify me, make me think, or blow me away with some unexpected twist. I saw some episodes yesterday that I’d never seen before, in addition to the usual line up of Twilight Zone classics.

The Rose Parade, which usually happens on New Year’s Day, happened today instead, because Jan 1 was on a Sunday. It was the first time since 1955 that there’s been a massive storm on the parade, which meant that for the first time in several years, the stealth bomber didn’t buzz over my house and scare the shit out of my family. If you can catch the parade on HD, it’s worth it.

Today is a busy day for Anne and me, because we’re leaving on the red eye tonight to go to the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas for the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure poker tournament.

While we’re down there, I’ll do my best to provide daily tournament updates, similar to my WSOP updates, at CardSquad.com. I’ll also do my best to update interesting personal stuff here.

Happy 2006 Wil and family! Enjoy Paradise Island- I had the chance to check it out in November. The glass sculptures in the casino are absolutely incredible.

I’m glad that you and your family had a pleasant ringing in of the new year and I hope that the coming year brings you much joy and happiness. 🙂
I do have a question…what is this “Americanizing Shelley”?? Did you ever post about this? I don’t remember reading about it.
Hope you have a good trip 🙂

    Happy New Year.
Lucky you didn’t have to deal w/ the Stealth. I have to hear it constantly over my house since I live next to that base!

I just updated my blog with DCFC’s “This Is The New Year” as well. Good to see you listen to DCFC and Nada Surf. I suggest The Long Winters… met them in September while they played with Keane and they were AWESOME. Was a fan before i met them… A fan for life after I saw them live!
    HAve a good trip!

The Twilight Zone is a great show. The original series always keeps me entertained. Rod Serling was a genius.

    Happy New Year!
Frank’s Zoo sounds fun. My family is filled with card players – not to be confused with poker players. I never win, so I try to steer people (with limited luck) towards board games.
Last year, I discovered Kill Doctor Lucky, which is kind of like Clue in reverse. The whole Cheapass Games (makers of KDL) philosophy is great – you use the same game pieces for a bunch of games, which allows you to spend very little on new games. So if you’re ever in the market for something new to play, you should check them out.
I hope 2006 is a good year for you and for all of your fans on WWdN: in Exile, too.

We’re a card-playing family, too. Current favorites are Wizard and Lunch Money, but the kid just got ‘Let’s Kill’for Christmas (I’m sure there’s something ironic in there, somewhere), and we haven’t tried it yet. So who knows?
There’s something about having the Rose Parade, Stealth Bombers, and the Twilight Zone in one place that tickles my inner story teller. Hmmmm…
Good luck at the poker tournament! It sounds like it will be fun for both you and Anne, which means… well, hopefully you’ll be lucky one way or another. Nice way to start your year!

Nothing special for New YEars. All my friends are elsewhere 🙁
The best place to catch the Rose Parade is on HGTV. no commercials and they go a bit more in depth.
Having a stealth bomber fly over my house would be cool…so long as they arent dropping anything :\

    Sounds like a lovely way to spend the holiday! I really felt bad for the soggy parade marchers… especially those poor kids whose marching bands didn’t spring for raincoats. (;

    Wil,
Happy New Year to you and the fam. Hope this year brings as much good fortune and health as 2005 did (minus the crappy colds).
I was thinking as I clicked over to this site from your other, since you’re pretty “moved in” to this site, why not modify DNS entries for WWdN to point here from now on and temporarily relocate the original somewhere else? This will save some of us who still go there first a couple clicks, and allow those who may not notice the FubarDNet update to see all they’ve been missing. Just an idea. Again, Happy NY and enjoy the Bahamas!

    Apparently, its better than sleeping…
