Just talk about the weather

  • random thoughts

I really love the weather today.
That’s right. I’m talking about the weather. Nice, banal, weather conversation. Guaranteed not to stir up any controversy, or incite any riots.
Seriously, though. I had to be at work at 8 this morning, and, thanks to the wonderful Los Angeles freeway system, I had to leave my house at 6:30. This meant that I got up with the Sun, which is never a bad thing.
My neighborhood is just filled with all kinds of wildlife: Peacocks, wild parrots, Canadian geese, and the usual finches and sparrows that pretty common in Southern California. When I get up really early in the morning, I always walk out onto my patio, and just listen to them for a second. It’s a really nice way to start the day, I think. On a misty morning like today, Ferris runs through the backyard, leaving little Ferris-prints in the wet grass, before she hurries to the back door, asking to be let in for breakfast.
When I left my house, I drove through this canyon nearby, and the tops of the hills were completely obscured by low-hanging fog and mist, which made LA look really pretty. Believe me, it’s not easy to make LA look pretty.
By the time I got to work in West Los Angeles, the clouds and fog had lifted, and there was nothing but clear blue sky, and a really stiff breeze.
At lunch, I walked down the street to eat, and some of those little puffy clouds had shown up, and the wind was really making them truck across the sky, which was super cool to watch.
If you live in Northern California, you should totally know what type of day I’m talking about. We don’t get these days often in SoCal, so I really appreciate them when we do.
Speaking of weather, I wrote another silly satire piecefor BBSpot. I went for a “man on the street” style of writing. It was fun.
That’s all I’ve got for today, folks. I’m off to this charming market, where I can enjoy a wonderfully delicious halibut sandwich.

The weather here in Jersey was pretty much the same as yours in SoCal. Beautiful! Too bad I was cooped up inside most of the day. 🙁 Ah, well. Enjoy the nice weather, everyone! 😉

Heh, weather here in Hawaii is always the same. Hardly anyone watches the weather reports, except when there’s a hurricane imminent. This is why they use attractive women as meteorologists… so people will watch.
“70’s-80’s with chance of rain.” I hear that one all too often.
This evening is spectacular. Lots of rain means dozens of waterfalls streaming down the volcanic mountain range I pass on my commute home.
Oh MAN, I’m gonna miss this place.

I’m in Edmonton, a little north of Calgary and the low tonight will be -30C (~ -25F). It snowed all day, till just before sunset when the sun emerged from the clouds just above the horizon and it lit up all of the falling snow. Making everything orange and red.
Very picturesque but I was glad I was inside.

You want weather? It’s gonna be t-stormin’ tomorrow, and it’ll all change over to snow by Saturday, here in southern Wisconsin.
Up in northern Michigan, however, they’ll be gettin’ 15+ inches of heavy wet sloggy snow by Saturday morning.
    Have a nice day, Wil.

I am embarrassed to say that I apparently am so dull and clueless that I thought talking about the weather in my Web log would be interesting. Heh. Might explain why so few people are commenting in my Web log. Though I thought it was rather fun talking about the cats as small, portable weather stations, wireless and battery free, that bring in the weather report (and a few earthworms, which seem to fascinate them as they writhe and twist slowly on the carpet).
And apropos nothing (completely off topic), have you see US Attorney General John Ashcroft singing? I can’t seem to keep myself away from this site: http://www.cnn.com/video/us/2002/02/25/ashcroft.sings.wbtv.med.html. It’s a kind of horrified fascination thing.

Hey, Wil ! Last time I saw a Canadian Goose, it was in the company of some “pommes dauphines” sitting right in front of me in the middle of a nice plate in an even nicer fancy restaurant…well I guess these birds do have a pretty good navigational system, so they never get confused enough to cross the German sky…
I live in the Black Forest here in Germany, which is beautiful, and I really live out there in the middle of nowhere, so it’s really peaceful and relaxing;I really enjoy it a lot to step outside either in the early morning or late at night (preferrably late at night, since I really love it to sleep in…) to simply listen to the sounds of nature.
I even wrote a song about this, it’s called “Creation”.
As for the article you wrote about Morpheus…coooool ! ! !

    Hi all-
Hmm… Here in central Jersey, the weather is totally unpredictable. It’s supposed to get up in the ’60’s today, and then snow on Monday. I’ve been saying for a long time what Wil said a few days ago: we, the people, have screwed up the environment so badly that I don’t know if it will ever recover. Here we are having a drought in MARCH, for goodness’ sakes, and all people can do is either complain about the cold or rejoice when it gets warm. It’s not supposed to get warm yet! My poor daffodils are poking their heads up, and soon they’ll freeze to death… it’s sad. As for Canadian geese- part of the reason they hang around is because of the weather- it stays warmer longer. Also, when they are fed by people, they’ll stay, ‘cuz they’re not stupid. Stay where the food is! 🙂 There’s a pond on my street where a bunch of geese and ducks live. It’s sad, because they’ve been hit crossing the street many times. I saw one get hit once, and ran to my house, giving myself an asthma attack on the way, to call 911. Yes, 911 for a goose! They’re people too. You know what I mean. Anyway, goosy was just fine in the end. All right, I know this is long, but I was a Wil virgin. Well, you know what I mean- this is my first time posting. I would like to invite all of you to my band’s website- http://www.thewagband.com- where you can see me in my Starfleet uniform (I’m a total Trek geek, no apologies here) posing with “Chekov”, “Rom”, and the doc from Voyager. Just click on my personal page and it’ll get you there, or e-mail me at [email protected]. It’s easy to find me on our site- I’m the only chick! 🙂 All right, enough already!
    Love, Alicia

    Hey Wil,
Ever notice how no matter where you go people think their weather is really unique and unpredictable? When I lived in Maine people used to say “If you don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes, it’ll change.” They say the same damn thing here in Michigan (and Ontario, too). One day it might be 54 degrees, the next day it’s 17. The weather is unpredictable in many places, jeez. YAY for Canada Geese (and it’s nice to see some people know the difference between ‘Canada Geese’ and ‘Canadian Geese’, lol. Yeah, yeah, yeah…… See ya’ later.

    Wil,
Greetings from Chicago, you really don’t want a weather report from here. Read your article. I have to say that the internet is great for many things but getting music or any other media is not one of them. I suggest we harken back to a simpler era when you borrow a bunch of your friend’s CD’s and burn them the old fashioned way. Screw Morpheus, Napster and whatever else, if you have enough friends, you have a library waiting to be built. I sympathize with those out there that may not be blessed with a lot of friends. Unfortunately, the internet is your only option for cheap music. If these sites are going to install Spyware on your system, they need to disclose that. Though you may be a thief in some people’s minds, you still have rights.

Sounds like a nice morning. I usually get up with the sun as well. It’s nice because I can stand and look out the back window while I’m waiting for my kettle to whistle and watch the sun ascent over the mountain. It’s more beautiful everyday.
Yesterday was lovely here as well. I spent most of the afternoon outside sitting on a rock by a grove where all the chickadees and nuthatches nest. I have one thin chickadee who follows me everywhere I go when I’m outside. Not five minutes from when I sat down did he come and land on my shoulder. Heh… I love those birds.
    Have a good weekend

Fun with weather…Seattle and most of Western Washington got dumped on by snow last night and this morning.
Dumped on. Tons. Fouling up traffic all over the place. Accidents, people abandoning their cars and walking – it’s causing all sorts of problems.
Absolutely _dumped_ snow all over the place.
    Like…
…an inch. Two? _Maybe_ three in some areas?
    As an ex-Alaskan…I’m quite amused.
Walking to work and passing 2 buses and about 75 cars on my way into downtown from Capitol Hill was fun. Driving is such a time-saver, isn’t it?
    Ah, well.
    Fun with weather, indeed.

  49. djwudi says:
    8 March, 2002 at 8:18 am

Of course, I do have to qualify that by saying that 1> Anchorage, Alaska doesn’t have the ridiculous hills that Seattle does, which _are_ pretty horrible in snowy/icy conditions, and it really doesn’t take much to get there, and 2> Alaska in general is more prepared to deal with snow than Seattle is. So I actually can understand why something like this causes such havoc.
    But…
…I can still be amused. 🙂
