Last night, at the Los Angeles Underground Film Festival Awards Dinner, Jane White is Sick and Twisted won best comedy, and my friend Danica won best new director for her movie Speechless, in which I have a small part.
How cool is that?! I’m in two movies which won awards, and I got to meet Zack Ward, who played Scut Farcus (He had yellow eyes…so help me God, yellow eyes), who was hosting the awards ceremony. It was funny…during the opening of the ceremony, he’s reading his prepared jokes, which are really funny, and he looks at me (I was sitting near the stage) and he totally stops and says, “Hey, Wil Wheaton! How you feeling?” The whole room is staring at me, so I say, “Uhhh…singled out.” Which is really funny, you see, because I was sitting next to my friend Chris Hardwick, who is not only in Jane White, but also hosted Singled Out on eMpTyVee. Unfortunately, I was the only one in the room who enjoyed the ironic humor.
You know, this is also a good time to share with everyone that Jane White has gotten rave reviews, and has also won quite a few awards! I’m extremely proud of Jane White, because it’s the first movie that I’ve done that is really just 100% comedy (on purpose, unlike The Curse).
When we were done at the awards dinner, Chris talked me into going up the street to The Laugh Factory, because he’s friends with Bob Saget, and Saget was doing a set. Now, here’s the thing about Saget: He’s insanely dirty, profane, raunchy, offensive, and hilarious in person. He is so unlike the stuff he does on TV, and if you ever get a chance to see him, I highly recomend it.
Three random things:
I noticed this morning that searching for “Wheaton” on Google Images gives rather interesting results.
I had an interesting thought about why Geocaching appeals to me so much, especially as an activity to do with the kids: it’s about the journey, much more than it is about the destination.
My step-kids have spent so much time around hyper-competitive Little League and Soccer parents and coaches, who put the focus on winning at all costs, rather than just playing (despite what the various organizations claim about sportsmanship) that I want them to be in an environment where their enjoyment is in the doing, rather than based solely on their success. Geocaching puts the focus right where I want it to be, and even if we don’t find the cache just taking the hike and spending the time together is awesome.
Some birds are building a nest in my breezeway. I think that’s really cool.

At 28 I still get action figures for Christmas. My mom calls me a toy collector, I call myself a toy “liberator”. First thing I do, open the box, render them valueless and play with them. That’s what toys are for.
My husband is glad you mentioned Bob Saget. He has always claimed that he saw Bob Saget be funny once, and I’ve never believed him.

Thank you Wil! After searching to find out what Geocacheing is, I’ve found some spots I may be able to find without a gps. I do not need more things to do…lol
My daughter hs finally decided she wants to join a Soccer Team next school year, God help her she is not competative and Ifear she will get hurt emotionally- All I can do is be there for her and try to help her understand it’s for fun- don’tget caught up in winning the trophey or blue ribbon.

Would love to see both of those films, but how??? You are so right about competitive sports. My three year old daughter begged to take gymnastics, I agreed but am terrified of what might happen if she wants to stick with it. Very cool thought for the day. I often wonder why more people don’t recognize the intelligence of Henry Rollins. I have quite a bit of his music and his spoken word stuff. On a more superficial note, the man isn’t hard on the eyes either.
Don’t be stupid Wil, it is absolutely impossible to be smarter than your parents! It just doesn’t happen that way.

What do your ‘step-kids’ call you?
My oldest is 8, and my S.O. has lived with us since he was 2, so he calls my S.O. “Dad”. He calls his biological father “Papa”. If your step-kids are older, that might be tough, though.
As for Geocaching: Quite a few of them can be done (with a little homework or a lot of area knowledge) without a GPS. Topographical maps, or mapping software is relatively inexpensive and one could enter the coordinates into the software and use a map to get close to the cache. There are also “locationless” caches that can be done from anywhere, just about. The http://www.geocaching.com website has info on all of this.
Wal-Mart has a nice starter GPS, the Magellan 315 for right around $99. I prefer my Meridian. The mapping software has saved us from getting/being lost countless times. I won’t leave home without it!

Today’s TV flashback/Zack Ward sighting:
One of my local TV stations apparently airs the very short lived (1994) Canadian TV series Boogies Diner (http://us.imdb.com/Details?0108712) of which Zack Ward was a part. Did that show air in the US? Other cast members included Jim J. Bullock and James Marsden.
If Canadians are looking for it, Global TV’s got it Sunday mornings (9:30am Eastern). It was a bad show, but good for a Sunday morning giggle.

I know what you mean about little league. Parents can be unbelievable sometimes. I’ve played music since I was four and I remember the parents of the other kids used to push them so hard it was terrible. I guess it works though, they ended up very good musicians.
You are so right about the sportsmanship issue in youth leagues. I coached many years of LL baseball and Ice hockey as well as umpired and refereed both. My focus with the kids was having fun while learning the fundementals of the game(s). It is sad that so many focus solely on winning at all costs rather than extolling the simple pleasures of having fun and giving your best efforts. Best of luck with your kids.

Here’s another little tidbit that only I will find interesting- my cousin, who has a family genealogy (sp?) told me the other day that one of our ancestors was one of the people who bought Manhattan for $24! So who owes me back rent? LOL

Thanks for the Google idea! I looked myself up as well, and not only found my Homepage, but also some of my ansillary pages 🙂 I found the same listings at Yahoo too (well a few less, but almost as many). Obviously, I never registered my sites w/ either search engine? My pages even come up under both my main nicknames. Thanks for the idea Wil 🙂
I guess I’ll have to take your word on Bob Saget, Wil. My perception of him IS based upon his TV shows (Full House and America’s Funniest Home Videos – and I won’t even name that heinous WB show). I’ve always thought he was extremely unfunny and bland. His delivery on AFHV always strikes me as awkward and contrived. However, senior citizens love him.
Personally, the only funny thing I’ve ever seen Bob Saget do was in “Half-Baked”. I’ll remember to see him if he’s ever in Chicago, and I truly hope he’s as funny as you say, so I can gain a new perspective. Thanks Uncle Willy! YOU ROCK!

Speaking of internet searches, there’s a website I recieved a link to today that has a gallery of photoshopped collector’s plates. While I was scrolling through the 22 or so pages, I found on page 20, a photoshopped Commemorative Plate of Wil as Wesley Crusher. Looked well done, considering the perversity of a lot of the other plates there. I think it’s the third one down.

Congrats on the films, and I like the sentiments about the family time. But I’m completely confused as to why there are more fuzzy dog pics in the Google Image search than pics of Wil! I was guessing all the TNGers and FARKers would have generated a higher hit rate than that!

I have been here before a long while back, but it’s been a while. I rediscovered your blog while searching for something else I can’t even remember now. I just wanted to say I’m really sorry about Felix, it’s really tough to let a beloved pet go, and it’s even harder when you have to make the decision to help them along. I’ve been there often enough to know. Taking in strays, rescues, and having them dropped in my yard for years means that my family has always had way more furry or scaley members than human members, and we’ve had to say goodbye a lot; old age, illness, ect… My sympathies for you and your family.
