50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Day Four

  • movies

I can’t believe that I am still awake and coherent.
It’s almost 1am as I write this, and I’ve only been home for a little over an hour.
Yeah, we were supposed to wrap around 7, but we shot until 11.
Holy mother of the Jackson Five. It was a long farking day.
Usually, if it’s getting later and later, they’ll just push the material to another day, but I guess we lose this particular set today, so they had to finish all the pages, and we didn’t get to leave until they did.
So today was a long day, but it was fun, and I did some nice work, I think.
In addition to the work, I also met the one and only Chef himself, Isaac Hayes.
I wrote about it earlier this morning:
CHEF!
When my alarm went off at 5AM today, it seemed like I hadn’t slept at all. I felt I had just turned off the light, and there was no way I was going to get up.
So I did that thing that we do when we’re exhausted…I did some quick math in my head, and figured out that if I ate breakfast from the caterer at work this morning, rather than cooking it myself before leaving, I could grab an extra 30 minutes of sleep.
So I reset it and fell back to sleep…and of course when it went off again, I felt like I hadn’t gotten any additional sleep at all. Matter of fact, I didn’t even feel awake until I was half-way to work.
I got to work at 7, went through makeup and hair, put on my wardrobe, and walked over to the caterer to get a breakfast burrito.
When I walked around the corner of the trailer, I saw him standing near the juices, talking with another actor…Isaac Hayes.
Dude! It’s Chef, standing right in front of the food!
I suppress an excited girlish squeal, and extend my hand, “Hi. I’m Wil,” I say.
“Oh, I know who you are! You’re the boy genius who made all those adults look stupid!” He says.
What? Am I still asleep? Did I just meet Isaac Hayes, and he told me knew who I was?
He continues, “I loved you on Star Trek, man. It’s really nice to meet you.”
I can’t believe that I’m keeping it together. I don’t even try to mask my enthusiasm, and tell him, “Jeeze, thank you. The admiration is mutual! I’m really excited to be working with you.”
We talk for a few more moments, but I can’t tell you what we said, because it was sinking in that I was standing here, in front of the catering truck, talking with Isaac Hayes, and he is excited to meet me!
After a moment, I tell him, “At my wedding, when my wife and I walked into the reception and were introduced to the assembled guests, we walked in to the theme from Shaft…”
He beams and says, “That’s cool! Thank you.”
He sort of half-bows, and he seems genuinely touched.
“…yeah,” I continue, “when I told her that you were working on this movie, she said I should tell you…so…there you go.”
I’m starting to feel like a full-on fanboy, so I decide now is a good time to STFU. Luckily, my breakfast is ready, so I excuse myself and head back to my dressing room to eat.
Of course, I’m so excited, it’s now cold, sitting on the desk next to me, because I had to write about this before I could eat.
I am such a dork.

Very cool on the whole meeting Issac Hayes AND having him know who you are. Good to see your happy doing what you love to do.

Woo hoo! I just noticed I was the first post. Very cool. Now I am the dork. Its 4:10 in the morning here on the East Coast and I am sure this will be the highlight of my day.

Man, for a dork, you sure held it together a lot better than I would. I’m sure I would’ve lurched entire sentences into verbal obscurity just because. Hell, I was a kid when Shaft was THE man (saw it at the drive-in….don’t tell my mom….we were supposed to be sleeping), and I had Mr. Hayes’ album. I lived in the middle of Bunghole, Alberta, and every other kid was groovin’ to twangy country tunes, so needless to say, I was definitely the odd one out. Thanks for the update Wil….I’ve only ever done extra work on a movie, so it’s excellent to hear it from one of the star’s points of view…..I’m looking forward to seeing your work, dude!

    Ahhh, Wil-
    Don’t worry about it.
    We’re all dorks.
If I met him-I’d freak out.
If I came across a shoe of his-
    I’d freak out.
I’d sell it on Ebay too.
    That’s dorky.
    Business. Dork biz-natch.

HO-LEE SHIT! Isaac Hayes. That’s awesome! I don’t even try to hide my fan-boy dorkdom. I’d have been squealing like a little girl.
Only a moment ago, I was looking at the picture in my living room of us in dark glasses, at Disneyland, standing on either side of a sign that reads simply, “Shaft.”
    Coincidence or psychic phenomenon?

There’s nothing wrong with being a dork. You would get almost no hits to your site if it weren’t for the dorks.
Can’t wait to hear more about the movie.

I’s really cool that you felt you could be gracious to another actor 🙂 Many would just be totaly cool and be like “hey, how are you, i’m good, by the way, cheafs cool.” kinda thing… We all love the fact that you’re such a dork, chill, and keep being one, you make it easier for the rest of us. X
Oh yeah, get to the london con man! Us Brits need a fix!!!! Genuine, who can we e mail to get you there?

Now you know how the rest of us would feel meeting you — minus the part where he knew who you were etc.
The envy’s always greener on the other fellow’s face – no wait. Strike that. Reverse it. Thank you. 🙂
And as for writing before eating, if that’s being a dork, we’re all dorks on this bus. If more of us were dorks in that way, the general quality of writing would rise – plus we’d all be thinner, but never mind…

    Overheard…
“Hey, I was on the set today and – you’ll never believe this – I met Wil Wheaton, and HE KNEW WHO I WAS! Told me he even played the theme from Shaft at his wedding reception. It was SO cool.” – Isaac Hayes
Way to go, Wil. Can’t wait to see it.

yeah…it’s pretty sweet to meet a cultural icon like isaac hayes…and it must be pretty strange to find out you are one yourself!

  24. Azrael Brown says:
    26 October, 2002 at 6:48 am

Hey, if I lend you my Isaac Hayes albums, can you get them autographed for me?
Kick ass, Wil — if I had my choice, I’d rather meet a cool minor figure from history like Hayes than some flash-in-the-pan superstar. Hmm….hey, Wil would qualify for that, too! Unfortunately, I don’t own any Wil Wheaton albums of autograph quality. Isaac Hayes will have to do.

  25. Nadia says:

It’s so nice to hear you’re a fanboy too. I makes me feel better about being such a fandork when I met you 🙂 Now my goal is to have someone cool like that recognize me too.
I can’t wait to see this movie. Wil, Issac Hayes and Richard Grieco.

  27. JoAnna says:

Theme from Shaft, eh? The recessional at my wedding was the Star Wars Theme. (We would’ve gone with the Trek theme, but we thought Star Wars sounded a bit more triumphant.) 🙂 Sounds like you’ve having a lot of fun – go, Wil!

I was pretty much a full-on fanboy the time I met Carl Sagan, and he signed my Planetary Society membership card.
He was wearing a dark green cordouroy suit.
    [/GEEKMODE]
    Oh, that hurt.
Wil, enjoy, dude. And quit falling all over yourself and thinking “I am such a nerd kid.” Fark, you’re 30, and you’ve been around this “fame” stuff all your life — what’s up with all that? Sounds like a little mental block — some kinda role confusion.
    [FREUD]

  30. Topeka Lee says:
    26 October, 2002 at 8:39 am

Definitely dorky, but you still managed to be dorky in a sweet way.
I’d think you’d be more immune to the synthetic magnetism of celebrity being on the “other side.” I’m intrigued by America’s fascination with celebrity as religion. You’re cool because you’re cool, not because you’re a celebrity. It’s just that most of us wouldn’t know that you were cool if you weren’t a celebrity. I’m singing in a group of people that is backing up Placido Domingo soon, and everyone else is all excited about it, but I just don’t get why they’re all getting a personal thrill over basically just standing behind someone famous.

  31. marc says:

Hilarious! Loved reading about the encounter. These daily posts about set-life are like rays of light shining into our otherwise squalid little lives! Seriously, it’s good reading! Keep it up!

  32. Candace says:

Ok I figured out who Isaac Hayes was…how stupid of me not to know who he was…The voice of Chef on South Park and so many other wonderful things..Ok now I know..thats cool..what makes me laugh is that he actually sings..Suck on my chocolate salty balls….LOL..OMG! Gotta love South park..

  33. Annie UK says:

For just one moment I thought you were saying, you and your wife walked into your reception to the Salty Chocolate Balls song.

“And on our honeymoon, my wife put this life sized poster of you on the ceiling above our bed. Would you autograph it for her?”
“Awake and coherent” I would get that phrase trademarked as soon as possible. You’ll make big bucks when Bush/Cheney use it as their 2004 campaign slogan.

Just tuned for only the second time since the Alaska Cruise Trek (so busy, busy!) and am really happy to hear the great news of the upcoming Pax movie (I’ll be watching for it in January)! Also appreciate the background tidbits–whetting my appetite. Don’t worry about being a dork. You’ll realize more and more as you grow older that it’s fun being dorkish now and then–who cares what anybody else thinks! (It’s sad that many young people are growing up much too serious. Wish there was a way to put dorkishness and youthful exuberence–like Star Trek fans–back into their lives.) Enough philosophizing–best wishes & LLAP-Live Long and Prosper!

It’s always nice to know that famous people still get star struck when *they* meet famous people. 😀 That’s so awesome that you got to meet Issac Hayes, Wil! Sorry about your breakfast getting cold, though. Hate it when that happens. 😉

  42. Annie says:
    26 October, 2002 at 12:13 pm

You, a dork? Hey man, you said it, I didn’t 🙂 But you know, you’re such a sweet, funny dork and we all love you.

  43. Rob says:
    26 October, 2002 at 1:03 pm

Hey, Wil…We probably all have some excitement threshold over people, like Isaac Hayes, who have meant something special in our lives…glad to see you are no different. Your willingness to admit it and be a dork anyway is part of your charm!
It’s great you’re jazzed about being back at what you love to do…and you know we’re all happy for you. Keep the news coming as you are able. Best, Rob

  44. Vanessa says:
    26 October, 2002 at 1:12 pm

You aren’t dorky, just sweet. The world (and LA) could use a few more ‘dorks’ like you.

Wow, that’s really cool. Isaac Hayes is the man!

  47. delphine says:

Angelwwolf asked, “By the way, does STFU mean?”
My guess is “shut the f*ck up”.
And it seems that my thoughts are redunant. Reminds me of the time I tripped over my tongue meeting Colin Mochrie. “And my friend in Britain told me to tell you that…” I felt like such a dork relaying the message and I didn’t even say it right. And then there’s the local celebrity that I met, opening nervously with “my mom’s friends with your dad so I thought I’d say ‘hi’.”
Why can’t we all just relax when we meet famous people?
(one answer I’ve considered: normally introductions consist of “hi I’m [name]” and vice versa but when at least one person already knows who the other is, it throws off the routine.)

  48. SarahNZ says:
    26 October, 2002 at 3:14 pm

It’s entries like this that remind why I love your site, and you. I love that you admit to being a dork over things like this – just had to say that. You rock!
