50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Tux Millionaire

  • computers

Taking a break from rewrites today, I read this story at a linux site I frequent for reviews and tutorials.

“Knoppix is a distribution of Linux, the open source operating system, that runs completely on a single CD, making no use of the hard drive. This is perfect for people like me, who have always wanted to try out Linux, but never could because they didn’t want to completely install a new operating system. This is my first time trying Linux, and my primary operating system is Windows XP. For me, Windows XP is fine. It does everything I need, which is mostly web development and regular computer usage, and is completely stable. However, after KDE 3.1 was released, I felt like I needed to try it out because it looked very nice. There was a problem however, Knoppix 3.1 contains KDE 3.0, which is not the latest version, so I decided to download a remastered version of the Knoppix distribution which contains KDE 3.1 from this site…”

If you’ve ever wondered about Linux, but you’ve been scared to death about doing the install, and dual-booting is something you think best reserved for a rodeo, you should check out Knoppix. It’s even cooler, now that they’ve got KDE 3.1.
I also had a submission accepted at FARK. Funtimes.
Update: Holy Jumpin’ Jesus! I got another accepted! That’s 2 in one day. Fb- is my father.

Cool! Maybe I could try it at home! I have a dual boot machine at work running Redhat with KDE (probably not even 3.0!)

Damn, after spending the last four years becoming an engineer, it amazes me that I’ve learned more about geek tech stuff from your blog than from all my classes combined. Thanks again Wil.

ooops… okay, so i guess the link didn’t come out… so, it’s http://www.linux-mandrake.com they actually have a version you can run “in” windows, too, so that’s cool… i wouldn’t run it on a slow computer though… and there’s nifty gui’s that are all pretty and you can download kickass themes for them. ah, anyhow. yay!

Dual-boot? Why not triple-boot! On my “fun” box I have MacOS, BeOS and Yellow Dog Linux, all of which I switch between routinely. Matter ‘o fact, I’m working on installing Gnome 2.2 on my Linux partition now.
My box at the office, unfortunately, runs only Win2k. It’s stable, but…boring.

I’ve met Meister Knopper on a Linux con a few months ago. This guy has more *nix knowledge in his little finger than me in my whole head.
Go and try it. You’ll love it, whether just for trying or as an installation basis system or as rescue disk. For me, it’s especially useful since I have DHCP and DNS on my network, so I can boot and have full net access without touching one config file.

I told my hubby about this and I wanted to try it out but that post was already buried.
I have been wanting to try linux out for awhile now, I am really tired of being dependant on windows.
    Thanks again!

If there was any hope of swaying me from the dark side that is MS, all hope was lost when I tried Knoppix. I found it slow, ugly, and unuseable. It lacks that Windows polish.
Of course here comes the obligatory ‘don’t let the door hit you on the way out’, but hey, maybe next version. 😉

Yea, I posted that article about Wil because I was saddened that he was being driven away. Sparked quite a discussion on there–even Wil himself posted a comment on there about it! Incidentally that was also my first submission to Fark to get accepted. Yippee!

    Hey Wil!
My husband was using Linux for awhile before I would even look at it(He’s big into the whole free software thing). Being the human creature that I am I was very reluctant to try it, let alone have it as my OS. So what my husband did was set up a dual boot on my box. It took me a little time to get used to it, I just needed to get over my fear of change. But in no time at all I was zipping around it with no problem. I’m proud to say for 3 years now I’ve only been using Linux. Also my 2 children who are 10 & 6 only use Linux as well. We have no computers in our home that have Win-blows(Windows) on it and we are a better family for it.

Knoppix is a great distro to get people to try out linux. If you’re in a sysadmin/network type job I’d also recommend you try out telemetry box if you’re not familiar with open source offerings. It can help you try out some cool stuff like nagios and snort without going to alot of work to set it up the first time.
Don’t spend too much time with rewrites Wil, I want to read what you want to write not what you think I want to read 😀

    2 in 1 day huh?
I must have submitted over 200 times over the years and have not had even 1 single submission ever accepted! My submissions often kick the ass of the submissions they do accept too.
Whoever was working the Fark admin today must have been a Wil fan. Maybe I need to impersonate a famous star.. then I’ll get my submissions in!
Well, if anyone wants to submit a video clip to my site (silversow.com) I can almost guarantee that whatever it is WILL be accepted. I’ve only ever had about 8 submissions.

I have heard about this before, but I am glad to hear there is a newer version. I am still planning at some point to install SusE on my old box once I wipe it again, and use that one to learn how to work Linux. If I get the hang of things, I plan to install it on the current box one day. But I am so skittish about it. Its a whole different language, different look, different way of thinking, everything. I feel like retard who still hasnt learned to tie her shoes and is being put in front of a computer and expected to be able to make it work, then again…
Oh well, thanks, Wil for being such a great ambassador to Linux.

Just got the latest update for Jaguar (OSX 10.2.4) tonight. All I can say is that my CD-RW drive is now knackered after I installed it (CD burning works OK when I reboot under 9.2.2 Classic, so it’s gotta be something lurking in Jag that buttbuggered my burner). Linux makes me sad right now. 🙁
Congrats on getting accepted at Fark. Wonder if you’ll ever try your hand at any Photoshop entries next.

I, on the other hand, am very glad that they don’t show who submitted links on Fark. I mean, most of the ones that I submit (that NEVER get posted) are pretty good in my estimation. But I’ll admit to throwing up some crap in the hopes that some will stick. Ew, that came out way more gross than I expected. I am not generally one for flinging feces at the screen. Even at Fark.

I have always been a fan of Norton’s Ghost. I am a dev that uses a number of different system setups but with limited resources, I can ghost one GOOD box with multiple OS’s and then do a complete restore in about 5 minutes. Pretty cool. This is also great for testing install packages. Create a clean image of what ever your target platform is, run your installs and if it fails you can revert in just a couple of minutes.
