I think it’s the second coolest date this year . . . the first being 01.02.03.
I think it’s so cool, I’m making a really stupid and pointless weblog entry, just so I can keep this date in my archives.
Many people who read this site using RSS feeds have complained at me that there are H3 tags around all my titles. Rather than respond to each e-mail directly, I’ll just put this here: I know, and it sucks. The thing is, I can’t seem to get the cascade order correct in my stylesheet (yeah, it’s on the list of things that DESPERATELY needs to be updated, along with most of the source for the site — but I’ve been, uh, working on other stuff 😉
If I could tell MT to make the .title class “large,” (and it actually *worked*) I wouldn’t need to use the H3 tags . . . but I swear, I just can’t figure it out. If anyone wants to offer some help, I’d be happy to take it, and you’ll be a hero to tens of RSS readers.
Good news and bad news on JAG.
Good news: the cover is designed, and looks amazing. I’ve been given some really kind and flattering quotes to put on it, and I think I have a really funny and insightful preface.
Bad news: It’s looking like the release is going to be pushed by a couple of weeks at best, maybe a month at worst. I am profoundly saddened by this fact, but I want it to be as good as it can possibly be.
“Dancing Barefoot” is still on schedule, though.
How about a thought for today?

UPDATE: I spent some time looking through my awful stylesheet. I know it’s supposed to be all charming and everything, and empowering to feel like I’ve come a long way . . . but holy crap! I felt like I was watching myself in “The Buddy System” or “Liar’s Club,” or some performance of mine that makes me cringe. All I had to do was download the damn thing and look at it in vim (yeah! geek points! vim, baby!) to see what I’d done wrong. First, there was no .title class. MT provides it, but I’d managed to bork it out of the style-sheet at some point in time. So I added the .title class, and set the font-weight to bolder, and the font-size to 27px. (It’s the only value that’s set to px, btw.) Thanks to Danielle, who sent the font-size number, and to O’Reilly’s Cascading Syle Sheets: The Definitve Guide, which just paid for itself. 🙂
Update-Update spoke too soon. I broke the effing thing again. I think I must be setting up the cascade incorrectly.
UPDATE-UPDATE-UPDATE: It looks like everything is working, now. Hooray.

    03/03/03 is cool because today is indeed and in fact my birthday. First year of the third decade down and a rather decent life to show for it.

    Don’t worry about the delay to JAG, I think it’s fair to say that we all want it to be as good as it possibly can be too!
    That said, I’m waiting with bated breath to buy it (and Dancing Barefoot) as soon as they’re ready!

  6. It’s okay about the book, “waiting is the hardest part”, but well worth it in the end. It’s pretty cold where I live too. -43Celsius, with windchill factor. Beautiful bright blue sky though, it’s worth it.

  7. Wil, I’ve dealt with tons o’ CSS stuff in my short life. Send me a sample of HTML and your CSS and I’ll give you the answer (he said, perhaps overconfidently) tested against Mozilla, Galeon, Konqueror, Opera, and even IE. (Remove SPAMMITY. to get my real address).
    I mean, who can resist being a hero?

    Delays are to be expected. Release dates are governed by chaos…Much like Italy.

  11. Wil: in .title, change your ‘font-size: large;’ to a pixel definition. H3 is usually about 20px. That’ll make it the size you want, on any screen. 🙂 Trust me, I do this all day for a living. 😉

    Regarding 3-3-03… well, every 3-3 actually…
    In Japan March 3rd is known as Girl’s Day (you’d know if you had daughters ^_^). It’s a holiday. Go dance barefoot with two left feet (shades of the mystic knights going through my head).
    We’ll be patient for the book. Make it right. Quoting Lecter, “Good things come to those who wait…”

  19. Shanti – weird, I’m looking forward more to 05/04/03 (dd/mm/yy) but that’s mostly ‘cos it’s my 18th.
    Woah, just realised what a cool date my birthday falls on this year! Yay! (Nearly pi day too, oooh so much mathsy fun to be had this month!)
    About JAG – is it going to be a simultaneous US/European release, or are we foreign types going to have to wait?

  20. Wil, try setting the font-size to “larger”, instead of just large. Also make sure that the template style sheet in the Movable Type interface has the .title class specified. When you rebuild entries in MT, it will overwrite whatever stylesheet is currently there (meaning: the one you edited in vim). So, check there first.

  22. to those talking about CSS font sizes, this is my 2 cents:
    never use a relative font size like “larger” or “x-small” as some people have their screen fonts set to different settings.
    setting the font size to an absolute value, ie. 20px, means the text will/should look the same on any display.

  23. I was all over the cool date thing this morning. In fact, it’s the only thing that got me out of bed to face midterm week.

    That was a curse-filled pain in the ass.
    I am not entirely sure how I fixed it, but here’s what I did:
    uploaded MT’s default “styles-site” file, and edited out things like the calendar and sidebar that I don’t use. Then I changed all the colors to reflect my personal tastes (I like the way the links change color, now. Pretty spiffy, IMHO). Then I broke it several times while I figured out who was inheriting what and why.
    NOW the only thing I *really* want to do is assign my navigation links their own class, so they have their own hover and visited properties. I’ve been trying to do this since the first week of the site . . .and if the last 30 minutes is any indication, it’s going to be another two years before that gets fixed. 😉

  26. What I really like about the new style(s) is that the text is now big enough that I can read it without changing the text zoom to 120 or 150% in Mozilla.
    1024×768 on this 17″ screen is too small for me to read quite a few websites (or spreadsheets, etc…) once I get tired and my vision blurs in the course of a normal workday. So I zoom when I have to.
    And I’m only 45!!!
    Oh, hey! (Totally off topic, but what the heck.)
    My wife called to tell me that the DSL setup kit I ordered last week arrived today! So… residential broadband, here we come, finally!

  33. Hrm. Now I’ve managed to make the comments look icky.
    Well, can’t win them all, I guess.
    Also forgot to mention that I set the fonts at “pt” because I *want* to make it easier for users to display this page according to their own preference.
    FWIW- I get about an equal number of requests to use “px” and “pt” as well as several other things that are directly in opposition to each other . . . so I have to set it up the way /I/ like it.

    On a completely different note, I watched the ST:TNG Season 4 DVD Crew Analysis featuring Wesley Crusher. It was very cool. Most of everything that was said I knew from reading your posts here. I enjoyed hearing Patrick Stewart talk about Wesley and Wil. I bet you enjoyed all the nice things he said.

  46. 3/3/03… it’s my niece’s birthday today! She thinks that since there are so many 3’s, she should get AT LEAST 3 presents from everyone! But, of course, family has to give MORE than 3 presents! Smart thinking for a 14 year old!
