Dear Grady Little,
Don’t worry about leaving your starter in when he’s clearly finished. Even if he blows the lead. Silly things like playing “by the book” are overrated.
See you on the golf course next week!
Signed,
Dusty Baker

YANKEES 6 REDSOX 5 GAME 7 FINAL
YANKEES YANKEES YANKEES YANKEES YANKEES
Heh.
Yankee fans, you can rejoice . . . just like you do EVERY FUCKING YEAR!! 😉
Good luck in the Big Show. I’ll be cheering against the fucking marlins with you.
Yet another great year for us Cubs fans and you BoSox fans.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Little’s post game news conference should be brutal.
i’m just thankful that all my trash-talking against the sox was backed up by the yanks…. *whew*
bring on those stanky feeeesh!
Pedro
I’m so sorry that you and your team lost. I feel so sad for you. I do hope you have now learned your lesson. DON’T F__K WITH THE YANKEES! AND DON’T F__K WITH ME.
Love
D. Zimmer
The worst part of this whole mess is that us Cubs fans have actually resorted to blaming ourselves…
“It’s because I watched the game, I know it. If I hadn’t watched game 7, they would have won.”
“I knew I shouldn’t have rooted for the Marlins in ’97.”
“We put too much pressure on them…they choked. It’s all our faults!”
I always root for the NL in the World Series if the Cubbies don’t make it (i.e. every damn year)…I just can’t bring myself to root for the FISH. What the hell do I do now? Oh despair…
(Next year is OUR year, I tell ya…)
Wretched Cubs Fan
As a Massachusetts-born die hard Red Sox fan and Yankee hater, boooo on the the lousy bums who made this game rot. Like, say, Pedro Martinez in the 7th and 8th innings. Crap. Damn bambino curse gimmick razza frazza grazza flaggin rin.
-Me
I shall be listening to Led Zeppelin’s “Since I’ve Been Loving You” for the next several hours. Sober.
Yankees fans need to take it easy on Pedro. When Clemmens retires it might be time to buy another pitcher from the Red Sox.
It’s always sad when the team that won didn’t really beat the team that lost. The Cubs and the Sox both beat themselves. It’s even sadder when the coaches clearly learned their strategies from “Seven least effective ways to use your pitching staff”.
Go Cubs!!!1
oh, am i too late?
Really, the ‘underdog’ teams made some really disappointing management choices in the crucial games this year. I’d hope that team owners are going to be having chats with the GMs, and trying to make some changes, both in pitching responsibilites and handling the fielders.
Somewhere in the beyond the Babe and the Goat are high fiving one another…
Cubs vs. Red Sox….. It wouldn’t be possible. It would start the end of the world.
Next thing you know, they will be putting an action figure in the Governor’s Mansion….
GO SENATORS!!! Oh wait.. wrong sport… see your asses in June Colorado… It’s ours
I truly hope that the World Series ratings are absolute crap. I’m tired of seeing the same teams in the Big Show. I’m tired of the Yankees buying their way into it. And thanks to the Cubs and Red Sox I watched more baseball in October than I have in my lifetime.
I think I am the key to this whole baseball thing. I’m a lifelong Giants fan. They lose to the Marlins. I like the A’s too since they are local. They lose to the Red Sox. Cubs deserve one, so I go for them. I don’t like the Yankees, so I go for Red Sox. Cubs and Sox are out. So who do you want me to go for in the Series? The opposite team will be sure to win.
Hey Wil — seen this?

Heh. It’s still weird to me to see Dusty coaching a team that isn’t the Giants.
CAn it be last year. Can I watch last year’s World Series? Y’know, the one that the Yankees WEREN’T IN?
Ahem. Sorry. I’m done now.
A pox on Grady Little! No seriously….I mean it this time.
Grady: “Pedro, you seem to be struggling, I think it’s time for you to sit down before you blow our lead and ruin our chances at a world series”
Pedro: “I’m the star, man, no way am I gonna sit down… the glory will be mine!”
Grady: “Fair enough. You let me know when you think it’s time you sat down”
Pedro: “NEVERRRRRRRR!”
On another note: Dave Barry points out that “Marlins” is an anagram for “Mr. Snail”. Think about it.
I had no idea until late last night that Aaron Boone had the same middle name as Bucky Dent.
Grady Little made my little boy cry.
Don’t go blaming just Little and Martinez. Great teams have catchers who tell the manager when the star pitcher is about to lose it.

I watched more baseball this postseason than I ever had because of the Cubs and RedSox. I probably won’t watch any of the World Series. I HATE HATE HATE the Yankees. Yes, please, buy yourself another Championship. It’s not like you don’t have enough bandwagon fans who only became fans after they won a couple World Series’ in a row. It’s soooo much easier to root for a team that can buy success every year isn’t it?
Meh. But Baker and Little need to watch the tape of their respective game 7s and try to figure out what the hell they were thinking.
I was really hoping some NY fan would jump on to the field and kick Pedro’s ass. I’m glad his ass got beat last night.
Dear Mr. Steinbrenner,
Please fire Joe Torre. The Red Sox need a manager with a brain.
Sincerely,
Red Sox Nation
It always amuses me when people bitch about the Yankees “buying championships”…here’s something to think about: Do you really think that George Steinbrenner, who owns the team, has more money than say, DISNEY, who owns the Angels? And yet, how many World Series wins do the Angels have?
Yes, the Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball. Yes, they’ve also won 26 World Series. The number two payroll? The Mets. The number three? The Dodgers. Now–tell me again how money = performance?
GMS
After 11 years in Boston, I moved “home” to Houston in July. I still cheer for the Sox, b/c hey, the Astros are an NL team. Last night, in the 8th, I called a friend in Boston and said, “What the hell is Gardy Little DOING?” She said, “I know! He is so fired!” Well, at least, his contract better not be renewed…
“Wait ’til next year.”
Despite being a lifelong Massachusetts resident, two weeks ago I could pick out only Nomar from the Red Sox lineup, and that only because of his big nose.
Now I can recognize Johnny Damon, David Ortiz, Pedro, and too many others, especially that snarking cocky Yankee Derek Jeter. And my crash course in baseball has only led to heartbreak.
Whoever said “it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” obviously never rooted for the Red Sox.
First.. GMS.. I agree with you. You can’t buy the series. Somebody tried that with 8 players on the White Sox back in 1908 (??) and look what happened. It takes talent to win. And while the BoSox have great talent on their team, they went up against a team that wanted it more. To the BoSox and BoSox fans.. geat series! I loved every second of it.
To the other nay sayers.. I can only say…
“It is High! It is far! It is….GONE!!!!”
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m actually rooting for the Yanks in the Series. Not that I’ll watch, because y’know, Cubs fan here. I simply can’t root for the Fishies.
And FYI, MobbyG, the Black Sox scandal was in 1919–1908 was the last time the Cubbies won the Series. 🙂
TTTTHHHHHEEEEE YYYYAAAAANNNNKKKKKKEEEEESSSSS WIIINNNNN!
sorry, I meant to say, “The Yankees Win!”
ah, I never get tired of hearing that, of saying that, of seeing that.
btw, I was rooting for the Cubbies this year, but I’ll take this instead.
sorry, one additional post to say, it was sooo sweet that the Yanks got their win thanks to Pedro Martinez. *that* was sweet.
that is all. 🙂
still reeling from the loss…..
too shocked to even join in the debate.
however….. getting tubby-old David Wells to shout “F*CK!!!” on national television?
priceless.
Why all the negativity towards the Marlins? They played their asses off, beating two teams that were “better” than they were, and had supposedly had “better” pitching. The Marlins are a fun, young team that has battled since Memorial Day to make it to the World Series. They won when they had their backs to the wall and they had the entire country rooting against them. They may get swept by the Yankees, our they may actually win the whole thing in seven, but please, show the Marlins some respect, they earned it.
Once again, a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory!
At least I didnt break my big toe like I did last time Sox were in the series.
For those that are pointing their fingers (somewhat rightfully) at Grady Little, there’s another person in the equation: pitching coach Dave Wallace. It’s partially up to Wallace to say to Little, “Hey. Get off your butt and get Pedro OUT OF THERE! He’s tired. Can’t you see that from his taking 15 minutes in between pitches?”
And the backlash towards the Marlins isn’t aimed at the team themselves, it is aimed at their lackluster poseur fans who spent almost 3/4ths of the season imitating empty seats. The Tigers outdrew them. The TIGERS! These fans don’t deserve to get to sit in a World Series game. I would prefer a neutral site for the Series in this occasion.
I’m primarily anti-Marlin because they beat the Cubs. As a Cubs fan, beating Cubs=bad. But as Michael pointed out, their fans don’t deserve it–not when they drew fewer people in the months of April, May, and June *combined* than they did in the three playoff games v. the Cubs.
Sorry in advance for the rambling but…
IMHO, It’s unfair to compare Marlin fans with Cub, Red Sox, Yankee, etc. fans. Those ballclubs have generations of tradition, while the Marlins have been around for only 10 years. Marlin fans may be too naive to understand the tradition of baseball and its meaning to a community.
Perhaps other ballclubs’ fans may be more forgiving if their team was dismantled after winning a World Series by a financial-minded owner. The next owner (now owner of the BoSox) promised a new stadium, but never delivered, and the team languished in the NL East Cellar. The current owner made similar promises and the club president even predicted 91 wins during Spring Training. South Florida was skeptical to say the least. We all know what happened next: Pudge, McKeon, Willis, Cabrera, not trading Lowell, Urbina, and Conine. In short: winning, some luck, and a commitment from ownership to make a run at the pennant.
To keep the Marlins together next season will balloon the payroll from $50M to $80. The owner may get rid of some players to trim the payroll, but if he is smart, he’ll keep a core group to make a run at defending the NL Crown. Maybe then, the fans will come back and rebuild some sort of tradition.
To root against the Marlins because of their fans not “deserving” it doesn’t make any sense. I’ll root for the Marlins because of their enthusiasm, hard playing, and never-say-die-until-the-last-out attitude.
Though it rather pains me to see the Yankees in the World Series again, at least I don’t have to watch the Red Sox humiliate themselves like they did in ’86…….true to form, the Sox remind New England residents of why they shouldn’t stay up late to watch the game.
They’ve got the wrong Baker in charge. *Darren* should be coaching.
Grady Little manages with his heart a little more often then with his head. I figure this’ll give him a lesson in that, and make him a much better all-around manager.
Grady Little for Sox manager in 2004!
..
Yankees Suck Ass.
i listened to GRADY LITTLE as he gave post-games comments to the media…and i agree with his rationale for leaving PEDRO MARTINEZ in the game…but as i was listening to GRADY talk…i just couldn’t get past the fact that he sounded just like FORREST GUMP…despite that fact…i really do believe he’s a good manager and deserves a long term contract…this off with their head attitude if the team loses a playoff series is a load of crap…someone does not have to die if you lose…it’s just a game…get over it and move on and look forward to next year.
