50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

foley is good.

Yesterday, I had more fun watching Wrestlemania dos equis than I thought possible. I haven’t followed WWE since it was WWF, but thanks to some Cliffs notes from my brother, I was able to pick up right where I left off.
The whole show was surprisingly exciting, with the notable exception of the Goldberg vs. Brock Lesner match, which was quite possibly the most boring match I’ve ever seen in my life. And I used to watch WCW, so that’s saying something.
I still remember watching Wrestlemania uno, while my 90 pound, 11 year-old body quaked with Hulkamania, so there was some nostalgia value wrapped up in yesterday’s event, too.
An incomplete list of highlights for me, in no particular order:

  • Return of the Classic Undertaker. That new, “I’m on Harley” Undertaker was the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.
  • Three words: Evening. Gown. Match.
  • That “Dragon” Cruiserweight guy who kept falling down. That was priceless comedy.
  • Bobby The Brain Weasel Heenan an Mean Gene doing something behind the green door with Mona. That was hilarious.
  • The Triple-Threat title match — one of the best PPV matches I’ve ever seen. Not quite sure if I’d rank it with the ’98 SS Hell in a Cell, but still pretty damn fun to watch.
  • Spending four hours with my brother, totally acting like dorks, and cheering like we believed it was real.

Everyone involved with WWE should be very proud of themselves. The commentators, the writers, Vince McMahon, and especially the performers put on a fantastically entertaining event. Now I’m sort of excited for Backlash.

I only do one PPV a year and Wrestlmania was it for this year.
    Well worth the money.
I’ve been following wrestling since I guess 97 so seeing Benoit get a clean win (via tap out no less) over HHH was simply awesome.
He’s worked long and hard and it was nice to see the company felt he had earned the right to carry the Championship belt.
Tonight’s RAW should prove to be interesting.

Ah, someone else used to watch the WCW. I was telling someone one the other day that it was rassling for the rednecks of the rednecks. And how it was the poor kid’s WWF. Ah, the memories…

Never really found that interesting. However, I did find myself at a comic book convention yesterday for the first time in Los Angeles. What a trip. A 6’1 300 lbs man dressed as frodo…now that’s classic.

Liquid Ice. . . also known as water!
The funniest eight-tenths of a second on that show.

I went to Wrestlemania uno waaaay back in the day, where all you could do to see it if you weren’t in the arena was to buy a ticket to another arena somewhere else and watch it on that fancy-schmancy closed-circuit TV.
Wasn’t that the one with Cyndi Lauper and Cap’n Lou? And Rowdy Roddy Piper? And it was real, back then, damnit! I can’t seem to convince 13-year-old me of anything different.

WWF is no more? It’s WWE now?
Next thing you’ll tell us is that there is no more “Black and Blue Express” or Hulk Hogan.

I have to echo Wil’s sentiments. The running joke of the night where we were watching was “This has better wrestling than Lesnar & Goldberg.” Sable throws side kicks in her lingerie: better than Lesnar/Goldberg. I don’t think the fans stopped booing throughout that entire match.
And don’t be ashamed of watching WCW. I did… when it was still good. Flair/Steamboat or Flair/Sting, anybody?

Isn’t that a registered service mark of the Bush Administration???

  12. wil says:

Teflon Tim: Our trademark line of the night was “Now that is just Classic Undertaker.”
No matter what happened, “Now that is just Classic Undertaker.”
I was a little sad that not one single person went through the Spanish Announcer’s Table. That would have made the night complete.
Good recap montage at the end of the show, too. The online editors @ WWE deserve an award for that.

The opening sequence of “Highlander” the first movie – and the best one – had all that pro-wrestling dorky male-hormones, bulging muscles, he-man grunting, animalistic imagery and sound on display. I thought it was a great way to start the movie, and the rock music by Queen fit right in (the music Queen did for that movie was out of this world – and in my opinion, some of the best the group ever did).
Do you remember the part in Highlander where you could hear the background song “Who wants to live forever?” by Queen, and then McCloud is returning to his wife, he hasn’t aged a bit, and she has grown old? And they are living somewhere up in the high country – this beautiful valley among the mountains. I think I was in tears when she passed away in his arms – a sort of ageless love –
    a kinda magic.
Highlander had a great beginning and middle, but I thought the ending sort of was anti-climactic and didn’t feel as good as the rest of the film. But beginning with a pro-wrestling contest, did set the tone of the film – of a battle between powerful forces – but in this case, immortal beings – of which, there could only be one.

Man, did Goldberg/Lesnar ever suck! WORST. MATCH. EVER. Oh well, they’re both gone now.
I’m suprised Triple H tapped. Good to see someone else with the belt. However long it might last.

Loved Wrestlemania XX. Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero, two stars that did not start in the WWE, getting major wins at the biggest PPV of the year was great.
And how can you not love the return of the Dead Man and Paul Bearer?

Russ kept making fun of me for wanting to watch it. Jerk. Heh.
But seriously, the Undertaker is in his 40s now, they need to stop calling him “The Phenom”.
And Lesnar sold out! Lesnar sold out!

I prefer to use the term “Vintage” Undertaker. Either way it was badass — not only because of the return of the original UT, but more importantly because PAUL BEARER is back… OHHHHH YEEEESSSSSS!

In a wave of “not being able to let it go…” I haven’t been able to enjoy wrestling since the days of the Iron Shiek, Hulk Hogan, Lou Albano, Andre, Superfly, Roddy Piper et. al. were around.
Basically, since the Hulk Hogan cartoon went off the air.
    I miss those days…
    Wil, say something nostalgic…

Lesnar/Goldberg as worst match ever? No, but it came awfully close. Royal Rumble 2003 had a match that sucked even more than this one, but just barely. Scott Steiner v. Triple H. It was just downright sad seeing Steiner suck so badly. I remember watching the Steiner Bros. as a tag team and it was good. Too bad those beefy arms prevent him from, god forbid, actually wrestling.
I admit though, it’s kinda nice having both the WWE Title and the Heavyweight Titles in the hands of people who aren’t little more than shaved gorillas.

I hated the “UnderBiker” with every fiber of my being, so last night this 30-yr old girl marked out just like she was young again when Paul Bearer arrived on the scene! With the Urn!!
And although Shawn Michaels has always tickled my fancy, I cheered wildly when Benoit won. Trips tapped out! Never thought I’d see that.
It’s funny how Brock got the “You Sold Out” chant, and The Rock, who shows up once or twice a year, didn’t.
Who here got misty when you saw Vince, Shane, and baby McMahon at the beginning and the voiceover said, “Where it all begins, again?”
One of the best PPVs I’ve seen in a LONG while. I’m definately turning RAW on tonight.

Hey Buntz! I have to agree with you on the nostalgia thing.
No shit were those days THE days! You forgot to mention the likes of the Von Erics, Kamala, the Fabulous Freebirds-(got to see Michael Hayes, the Sheik, Kamala, and more at Wrestlemania 17 back in ’01) Jake the Snake. Man, I could go on and on. But hell yeah, today’s wrestling just doesn’t grab my attention like the days of yore.

If you start really getting into wrestling (like I am), on top of everything else, you will be the geekiest geek who ever geeked.
Oh, and it was Moolah, the 80+ year old former wrestler, not Molly, the chick who got her head shaved when she lost her match, who was in the closet with GeneO and Mr Brain.
Have you read Foley’s books? The two autobiographies are a great read. The kids books, not so much.

Needs more Mean Gene/Weasel commentary and a pinch of cowbell. Otherwise, an excellent show.
I still can’t believe Triple H would actually lose clean!

  30. Shaun says:

Wrestling? Yeah, it was cool… Then I turned 12. Sorry…
Seriously though, between the guys who have died either through stupid accidents or steroids (steroids provided by Vince McMahon I might add), the degradation of women on those shows, the XFL, and the Rock shilling for Dumbya four years ago, I can’t think of one reason to watch that stuff. It would be nice if moe Americans knew more about their leaders and what’s happening in the world than they do about grudge matches and Wrestlemania, but hey… Whatever floats your rubber duck.
I did get nostalgic for a few seconds when I saw the names of both Bobby Heenan and Mean Gene Okerland (sp?). Those guys have gotta be older than dirt by now. I remember watching them, along with Hulk Hogan, when they part of a small Midwestern wrestling league more than 20 years ago. The AWA, I think? This is going to sound really stupid, but I think wrestling was somehow a little more “pure” and family oriented then. No, really.
I’m going to sign off now before someone hits me with a steel chair or wraps me in a figure-four leglock.

Yessss!! Benoit & Eddy with the titles!! Never thought Vince would allow that.
But the absolute,XX highlight for me was seeing The Rock & The Nature Boy in the same match. The two most charismatic “Performers” in the last Thirty years of Wrestling (or for that matter Anywhere) together…
    Thank You Vince.
    Love & Peace.

My father has been dead over ten years, yet some of my favorite moments were watching wrestling with him. Even though he professed to know it was staged, his true colors came through. Case in point. Tag team match. The good guy had the bad guy pinned (and out cold). Bad guys female manager distracted the referee. Other bad guy came in, hit the good guy with a foreign object, threw the his formerly pinned partner out of the ring, pinned good guy (covering his face with his arm so the referee, now in the ring, couldn’t tell it was the wrong bad guy doing the pinning) as the referee counted three and declared the bad guys the winner (and new tag team champions, I think.)
Dad: “SON OF A BITCH!” (like it was real, after all).
To this day, that memory never ceases to bring a smile to my face.
