i shit a piece of π

  • Uncategorized

This morning over breakfast, I said to my wife, “Happy π day!”
“Happy pie day? What the hell are you talking about?”
“No, not ‘pie’,” I said. “‘π’.”
“Not ‘pie,’ but ‘pie.'” She was clearly not amused. “Isn’t it a little early to be drinking?”
“Anne, look at the date on the calendar.”
“Yes it’s march 14th, and you’re going to watch WrestleMania dos equis* with your brother.” She frowned. “Are you trying to tell me that you’re taking a pie to Jeremy’s house? Because if you expect me to make you a pie . . .”
“No, I don’t expect you to make me a pie.” I said, well into that area where you’ve explained the joke so much, it’s never going to be funny.
“Today is March fourteenth. That makes it 3.14 on the calendar. 3.14 is also known as π.”
She blinked a few times.
“Oh. It’s π day.”
“Yes!” I said. “And at 1:59 pm, it will be even more &#960 day. Isn’t that cool!?”
She took a long, thoughtful drink from her coffee mug, carefully set it down and said, “You are such a nerd.”

    Wil,
Just once, I would very much like to see a picture of you wearing the following:
    1) “Nerd” glasses, complete with white tape holding (or pretending to be holding) them together
    2) White collared shirt with breast pocket
    3) Pocket protector with various writing utensils, including 4-in-1 multicolored ink pen and hi-liter, stuffed in aforementioned shirt pocket
    4) A black, slightly crooked bow-tie
    5) Black slacks, probably of the khaki genere, or
    possibly courduroy
    6) Rubber soled Lab shoes
    Fake buck-teeth are optional…

I have a conspiracy theory that the “Ides of March” is related to Π (even though I have heard that the 15th is the ides). Et tu Wil?

“It doesn’t just look like pie…….it IS a piece of pie.” Man…..that makes me want to pull my basement apart looking for my box of old tapes. The Frantics were the great.
    “Boot to the head!” 🙂
    Happy pi day Wil,
    Darren

I believe “Ides” translates roughly to “the middle” Therefore “The Ides of March” would be someting like “The Middle of March”, which suggests March 15. But, seeing as how there are actually 31 days in March, then the “Ides” of March really should be March 16, as there are exactly 15 days before, and 15 days after, March 16.

    “Juicy filling? Flaky Crust?”
    “Big round blueberries –”
    “THANK YOU!”
Heh. The Frantics are one of the main reasons I wanted to be in sketch comedy.
“I don’t want to talk about a stupid little town, full of stupid little people, and their stupid. Little. Lives.”
    [pause]
“Oh, so you’ve been there, have ya?!”

Ann checked her phaser as she aimed it at her husband Wil. It was set to “Let Him Have It” Then Wil revealed his humor and she returned her phaser to it’s resting place. And the lived happily ever after.
And so was the start the start of day.

Woo, Wrestlemania! (Nice to know someone else isn’t embarrassed to admit they watched it – I watch every year with the husband.) The Rock-n-Sock/Evolution match nearly gave my Foley-lovin’ heart palpitations, but seeing Benoit on his knees crying, in the middle of the ring, in front of a packed house at Madison Square Gardens… God. Damn.
Anyway, good thing ‘Pi Day’ didn’t come up during the course of the show – you know how Rocky gets when ‘Pie’ comes up…

“As easy as pie? As easy as pie?”
    “That’s what he said.”
“No he didn’t! He said easy as ‘pi’, the Greek letter ‘pi’! Surely you know some basic mathematics, child?”

Actually, my old college, Carnegie Mellon, regularly celebrates Pi Day. Of course, there’s a huge engineering school there, but we won’t emphasize that…
Wil, go talk there! You could make a mint on the college lecture circuit. 🙂

ah, good old pi day. i learned about it a few years back when i came across a website detailing a group’s celebration. everyone made pie’s and they were in a circular room so they circumnavigated it 2 and whateverthefractionis times.
the local university has a society of pi that’s going around and pieing people to raise money for charity… i hope they celebrated this day.

Joffonon, I love Dr. Who, too! I used to watch it all the time on PBS. Tom was my fave.
And BTW, Wil, I saw you the other night on VH1s the Best Week thingy. Pretty groovy! It was unexpected, and quite nice to see you. 🙂

hehee, Pi Day is awsome! When I was in college we celebrated it every year. Though since I was a math major, that might not be that odd… We also had a Pi Sale every year for the Math club. We would sell out in about 45 minutes. Only $10 for 2*Pi handcrafted by geeks with little cut out integral signs on the top!

  33. kiki says:
    15 March, 2004 at 5:57 am

    Yikes…
You get +20 geek point for thinking up something as crazy as celebrating π day….but -2000 geek points for not finding the symbol for pi…and using an “n” instead.
I had to re-read that first sentence about 5 times to try to figure out what the heck you were talking about. Was it an expleative so haneous that you could only refer to it as the “n” word?
    Most confusing.

  34. kiki says:

  36. derek says:
    15 March, 2004 at 6:01 am

It should actually be 1:59 AM, not PM… Many countries use 24hr time, in which case 1:59 PM is actually 13:59, and as we all know, 3.14.13.59 isn’t nearly as tasty as 3.14.1.59!

when i was finishing high school and touring around looking for the correct university, i went to the university of waterloo on one of their tour days…
it just so happened to be march 14th.
anyhow… being a math geek, i was quite enthralled that they were having pi day celebrations too…
for example… on march the fourteenth… at 1:59 pm… on the second floor of the math building… they were giving out free pie!!!!
    free pie!!!
(for anyone who wasn’t following… that makes 3.14(the date) 159(the time) 2(the floor of the building))

  39. Fade says:

My college had big pi day celebrations. Math quizzes and pie-eating contests, the number written out all the way across campus in chalk (up until they hit the road and had to stop, anyway), prizes for being able to recite the most digits of pi…
Ah, those were the days. And to think I almost didn’t notice today was the day!

So, did you read Life of Pi this weekend? 😉
Oh, and re: Gary Blivin’s comment above — March 4th happens to be my birthday, and that’s probably the only way the spouse could remember: “I marched forth on March 4th.”
Now if I could just come up with something for our anniversary… sigh

  46. Jessie says:
    15 March, 2004 at 8:43 am

Wow, I thought my friends and I were the only ones who celebrated pi/pie day. usually my friend Brynn will have everyone over on March 14th and we each bring our favorite pie. Sadly, she’s getting married so I’m sure her mind is on that and not pie day. Time for the fun to stop I guess.

  47. Jitendar says:

I was so excited to see that you were excited for Pi Day! For the past three years, my friends and I have celebrated it, with a Dairy Queen cake and everything 🙂 Hooray for Nerds!
