50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Nolan walked over to my desk and tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around in my chair and looked into his cheshire grin.
“What are you doing?” I said.
“Oh . . . I just saw something I thought you may be interested in.” I noticed that he had one hand behind his back.
“It wouldn’t be related to what you have behind your back, would it?”
His grin got bigger, and he revealed People magazine. Jennifer Aniston was on the cover — apparently she’s one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.
“I don’t want to burst his bubble and tell him that I’m not all that excited about her,” I thought, “But I don’t want to lie to him, either. Crap! It’s a Parenting Challenge. What do I do?”
“Nolan, I –”
He opened the magzine and revealed a two-page ad for the new Ford GT. It was my favorite car at the entire LA Auto Show when we went a few months ago. He gingerly set it down on my desk.
“I think I’ll leave you two alone,” he said, and patted my knee before he left.
He managed to contain his giggles until he was just outside the door.

I have Erin K beat on the music geek title, although maybe he/she’s just being modest. The Soul Coughing album is named after Ruby Froom, who’s Mitchell Froom (record producer to the stars) and Suzanne Vega’s child. I knew this story, but I don’t know that I’ve ever heard Soul Coughing’s music. This is sad, I need help. πŸ™‚

So, Wil, you going up to Pebble Beach to bid on the first sale to the public? GT #10!

Y’know, Wil, I sense a TV comeback. Just turn your blog into a sitcom πŸ˜‰
But make sure Nolan doesn’t get all the punchlines!

i think NOLAN would really like for you to get that car…i know i always wanted my dad to get a cool car…we’d get the brochures in the mail and i’d be rattling off the cool things about each car…the automobile…a bridge to the heavier conversations you’ll have with him in the future.

I might not have anyone beat in the music geek department, but I have practically everyone beat in the Soul Coughing geek department (and I mean geek – I’ve used moonsammy as an online nick for at least 6 years). Saw them live 4 times plus M Doughty solo 4 times (and I don’t live in NY), have at least 8 live shows in mp3 format, and every rarity / b side that has been available online in any format that I’m aware of (though Mat at SCUG has a few song clips available that I’ve never found the full versions for). I even went back and mp3’d a tape I had with M Doughty doing some readings from his poetry book Slanky live on Rev105 back in ’94 or so. I’m perfectly happy to share anything that isn’t commercially available, some of their non-album stuff *really* deserved wider dissemination (email me – mikeUNDERSCOREpaquetteATyahooDOTcom).
I actually started reading this blog because a while back Wil had the El Oso album cover under “Listen” on the side of the page πŸ™‚

I think after he patted you on the knee and said “i think i’ll leave you two alone” one can imagine a wave of embarrassment and intense humour swept over you.
    Two thumbs for Nolan πŸ™‚

Thanks for the earlier link to the 60 second ad. Even in the little pop-up window it makes my heart beat faster. It looks like the track might be Laguna Seca…can anyone confirm or deny that?

Hello old man! I’m posting on your website for the first time and I have a itch that needs scratching. What is the symbolism of the starship Enterprise to you? I’m doing a talk about Star trek in my art school Cal Arts since I like it quite alot and have decided to critique it in my art school. I’m starting off with TOS and the sym, bolism adn iconographic meaning of Enterprise, the Crew and the Klingons.
Well, mainly I just want to poke and prod at the brains of these uberserious art kids whou think that Vito Acconci is a genius. (i beg to differ)
So, symbolism of the enterpris. What the hell does she represent and mean? Since pop culutre has practically thrust the show to an incredible new plateau that no body at the time though possible. Now what do we have, millions of fans, billions of dollars in merchandise and the guy from Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap!
so, I’d like to hear your opinion.

  19. Tim says:

What is it about the car, they ask?
Well, I don’t think Jennifer’s speedometer goes near 200, nor does she lay rubber (wait! Stop those nasty jokes!) in the parking lot.
My memories of the original Ford GT are from HO-scale slot cars… and I had a 40-something Lincoln that blew the doors off every GT because it wss so heavy it couldn’tleave the track.

    Wil,
The Ford GT is a pretty smooth car. I just got done looking at the official site. Not bad at all. Im an import fan however. Would take a Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec over just about any car there is. Notice I said “just about”. I like women just as much as any guy (even though im a chick) But I would rather look at the cars they are often perched upon. Cars a big thing with me and I think most of the time I would take the car rather than the chick. Heh, even if it was a guy perched on the hood I would still take the car. Lolz =)~. Im not biased, I like all kinds of cars, Im just more fond of imports when it comes to super tuned or radically modified cars. But my one and only true love will always be the Hummer, and the new H1 is bad ass. The H2 kind of sucks though =/. Whatever blows your hair back I suppose. =)
    HAVE A GOOD ONE!!

To the guy who asked “What does Soul Coughing have to do with it?”
I answer “nothing. except the totally cool album title that fit the column”
I presume the GT ad featured a *red* car?
I guess this makes me a patronizing language/ symbolism/ music geek?

    Dear geek hero:
    My comments:
Jennifer Aniston: Well-Groomed, I’ll give her that.
Cars: meh. We need to find alternative means of travel and fuel use.
    That’s all.

Thanks a lot, Wil. All I have been doing the last two days is obsessing over that damn car. Man it is hot – and the commercial on the Ford site is pretty friggin cool as well. Now if I can just get a 2nd mortgage to cover the $153k….
