I’ll be on the David Lawrence Show again tonight (this time in studio) at 9 pm PDT. I’ll be talking about gmail4troops.com, including some stats about what we’ve done so far. I hope that I will be able to share some of the comments I’ve gotten from servicemen and their families, too.

Rock on, thank you for your support of this cause. The feedback from the troops and family members have been touching and amazing! Good luck on the show tonight. David Lawrence and crew are the best!

Hi Wil. I enjoy your Web site very much. I look forward to reading your books. Keep up the great work! Hopefully our servicemen will all get to come home soon!

That’s awesome, Wil! I’ll see if I can’t listen to it tonight.

Thanks for setting that site up, Wil. Most of my friends are geeks who already have accounts, and I couldn’t seem to give away my invitations to anybody who might actually put them to good use. Being able to give them to the troops is great!

WOW, when did the freak show get to town??
    Inbreeding is BAD people. Fuck!
Anyway, Wil…I hope the show goes excellent tonight. I will try to tune in. 🙂

It’s funny, Wil. I thought at first reading that it said “David Letterman” show. Woah, Wil’s going bigtime with the Gmail thing!
Anyway. Thanks for the quick lesson on it’s better to give than to receive. If anything can get someone over their own personal pity party, it is to help someone in a far worse situation than them, and you’ve shown me the light.

Keep it up and keep it REEL 🙂

Not too thrilled with David’s pay-to-listen model. Before he moved out to LA, I remember being able to listen to Online Tonight archives for free. I understand the guy has to make a living, but with all of the sponsored links and other links that provide him a cut of related sales, I think charging for the actual meat of the content is a bit much.

ChuckEye: if you look at the links on the right side of the DLS page, there are several radio stations with Internet feeds that carry the show live, for free. I listened to the one out of Portland, which had an annoying hum but was plenty clear enough.
Besides, it’s a *quarter* to download Wil’s hour of the show — these days, you can’t even make a phone call for a quarter.

Fair enough. I should have dug deeper. I suppose paying for the privilege of time-shifting is to be expected. I would just hope that the paid listens don’t have other advertisments within the program too. (Yeah, I know, you pay to watch ads on cable; you pay to watch ads at movie theaters; you pay to see ads in magazines; still allowed to bitch about it though.)

good hour for a quarter. Worth the purchase for sure.
Everyone should give a listen. Great show.

I posted on that gmail for troops site that I had an invitation. I haven’t heard anything back though. Any idea how long it takes to hear something back? Maybe I should go post again? I’ve already set up all my friends, so I have a few extras, and I’m not the type to sell them..I think that’s lame actually, but that’s just me.
Anyway, anyone know how long it takes to hear from someone on that site?
    thanks
    Tasha

Wil…you might want to keep in mind that there have been a lot of exchanges made off of the message board. I have personally had 3 servicemen get my e-mail from there and e-mail me directly asking for an invite (which I gave them) without posting to the board. The numbers from the board, therefore, are probably much smaller than the actual impact has been.
    Thanks!
    Pati

I’m surprised at you, Wil. I thought you were geekier than that. Why do the troops really *need* gmail? If the family was considerate, they would post the photos or whatever on a website for viewing, not cluttering up the soldier’s inbox. No free service lets you send or receive messages larger than 10MB (even Gmail), so it’s not as if they could get many photos or movies mailed.
If their friend’s and family can’t deal with making a webpage, why not use another service they can sign up with NOW, like Yahoo? They offer a lot of storage, no need to wait for an invite. Plus Yahoo offers the space for photo storage and managing photo albums that makes more sense than keeping things in an inbox.
I’m just shocked that you’d think that begging for an unecessary around to email photos around is a better idea than than the alternatives. Very ungeekly.

This is the first I’ve heard of gmail4troops, but it looks like it is an excellent progam. How do the invites work?

yay lis! nice to see thoughtful constructive criticism. wil has wonderful intentions and i’m fond of him but this reminds me of the effort to support striking hormel workers a few years back.
[hormel makes spam by torturing farm animals.]
the iraqi prison situation is worse than we thought if the info in this lawsuit check out
    http://www.ccr-ny.org/v2/home.asp.
it’s hard for me to get how to support the troops without supporting the war, except to bring them home. maybe the emails help personalise the war in a way that will reach voters, i’m confused.
gmail’s been working pretty well for me tho.
google’s ‘don’t be evil’ motto is a helpful one, given that google is taking over the planet and bring on the singularity.

I think it’s great what you are doing! I signed up awhile back. Still waiting on them to contact me to use the invites I want to donate.

Google once again had proven they are the number one company on the net introducing a brilliant new
    concept of handling mail!
The idea not to through anything and be able to search through your mail archive in a sophisticated way is just what we have all been waiting for and clearly shows Google understands the behaviors of users!
