50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

The Quintessential Aristocrat

  • Uncategorized

My friend Martin, who is in my gaming group, wrote a PDF for Mongoose called “The Quintessential Aristocrat,” and it was just published this week.
I think a few gamers read WWdN, and they may want to take a look at it. Martin’s an incredibly creative guy (sadly, our characters don’t know each other in this campaign, yet, so we’re reduced to giving each other shit out of character the entire play session, mostly centered around Martin’s always fabulous choice of footwear) and it’s worth a look, if you’re into playing Aristocrats, or just making your buddies think you are one.
*sniff* Cheers.
(Uhm. Yeah. Looks like I need to read it, too.)

1st post! Thanks for putting comments back. Too bad I’m not much of a gamer…it’s over my head.

Last time I played an aristocratic type character in D&D after thirty minutes of gameplay (in which my character whined about everything that wasn’t good enough for him) my “friends” took my character down to the swamp, cut off his big toes and threw him in. Funny, they always like it when I played a Kender type character though.
And, =^), if you play with the right group of people, gaming is never over your head. Give it a shot, it’s fun.

Cool! My daughter is a major gamer! I’ll tell her to check it out when she gets back from her Computer Simulation Contest at LSU!

    On a related topic…
Over on the Pyramid boards the news was recently posted that JMS has been approached (or approached them… fuzzy thinking from allergy meds, sorry) a new Star Trek series. The subject quickly mutated to B5 and who we’d like to see in it, guess who’s name popped up…
    > Y’know, I’m suddenly overwhelmed by the desire to see Wil Wheaton
in a Bab5 production. I think he’d be an interesting Technomage, or even a telepath-in-the-military, like the XO in CRUSADE. Or better yet, the partner of Harriman Gray (JEFFREY COMBS).
    No, Besters protigee psicop.
    >
I’ll have to point out your friend’s suppliment to my d20 crazy friend, I’m a GURPS man myself. I’ll forgive you for ditching a D&D game.. but a GURPS game… that’s another story. 😉 You’re endangering your status as a member of the League of Gentlegamers.

I wish my friends or family were gamers. They all think I am a big nerd for being one. I can’t wait until my son is old enough to learn how to play.

Finally, comments are back! In regards to your entry about KoTR2 – Han does shoot first. I’d prefer the term “geek” over “nerd”. 🙂
At least that’s what they call us in the 501st. http://www.501st.com if you don’t know what I’m talking about. Our group just had the privilege of meeting Richard Hatch from Battlestar Galactica and seeing a bunch of great fan-made films, including an entire remake of Indiana Jones: Raiders. It was amazing and if anyone ever has the chance to check it out it was made by Chris Strompolos. I highly recommend it.
Speaking of geeks and nerds, I just went off for a half hour myself. . .
Anyway, glad the comments are back up. I missed reading all of them.

Hey, first time commenter, long time gamer!
yeah fatherhood does that to you wil- i have a 9 yr. old girl and a 7 yr. old boy, and it is an awesome experience teaching them to game! my daughter in particular loves d & d, while my son seems obsessed with star wars. so, when yours is old enough- perhaps you will pass on your love of the game!
off topic- remember summer 1989, wil? you showed me great big hollywood guys loved comics too- you were consulting, i think, at dc comics that day. i was disappointed that the staff would not let me watch them at work- but my day was made as a i babbled incoherently when you (and your mom, i think) walked in to the offices. my grandmother saw i had no tongue, and made introductions for me! i was morbidly embarrased .still am, thinking back on it. turns out wil wheaton is a regular guy! must get your book and share with the spouse.
    tafn.

So, I used to be a gamer. I grew up playing AD&D, since its creation…
I miss it, but I know no other gamers anymore, nor do I wish to play the newer versions of D&D, and relearn all that I once knew so well.
Anyhow, I have a question for Role Play gamers/video gamers. Does anyone know of a great video game that mimics AD&D closely? I have a PC, but withouth suped up video cards and whatnot. I am not opposed to purchasing a Sega system or something for the right games. I don’t really feel like subscribing to a monthly service for play time either… standalone game would be better. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Also off-topic: But SUPER CONGRATS on the WPT Hollywood Home Game – and I know you’ll be a gentleman — didja see Daniel Baldwin acting completely wacko the other night??? LORD I was so glad when Ming-Na took him out of our collective misery. Anyway, have fun, play well and enojy the time to be a WPT man! Awesome!

Charyb- do it! my little pc does not have a ton of stuff in it, either- but there are some great games available for the home consoles.
i heartily recommend BALDUR’s GATE: DARK ALLIANCE and BALDUR’S GATE: DARK ALLIANCE 2 for Xbox or Playstation 2. You also might want to check out the great CHAMPIONS OF NORRATH for PS2, if you like that feel of pure hack and slash. It is a decent stand-alone game, in spite of being one of the dreaded Neversleep- er, Everquest- line of games. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HEROES is a good time-absorber for the Xbox, as well.
If you do not have either of those systems, and are shopping for a Sega, you will be sorely disappointed unless you are a rabid E-Bay surfer. Sega stopped producing home consoles nearly two years ago, and is focusing their talents strictly on games and software, now.
However, if you are inclined to buy one of the Sega systems, or several, there are many great Advanced Dungeons & Dragons games out there, as well. They were produced before Wizards of the Coast bought the Dungeons & Dragons license, and are modeled after the “old school” AD & D system.
You won’t find them in stores. Many of them were made by a company called SSI, and they covered most of the AD & D “worlds” that saw print until about 97 or 98. I personally own many of these relics of a bygone age, and still get some gameplay out of WARRIORS of the ETERNAL SUN, on Sega Genesis (Sega Master to you Brits). EYE OF THE BEHOLDER was a decent Ad & D title as well, eventually making its way to the Gameboy Advance(!) after finding homes on Sega CD, home PC, SuperNintendo, and (shudder) Sega 32X.
Any decent search engine should give a listing of these and other titles out there.
And i seem to have monoplized my lunch hour reminsicing, so back to the whip…

gosh darn it, wil…more crap for my husbands to spend money on (or maybe i will beat them to it 😉 )
    seriously, this is cool.
the guys i game with prefer d&d 3rd ed or savage worlds (even i can understand savage worlds)
i’m glad you can stay home with anne and the kids sometimes rather than gaming (but gaming is good, too…maybe you can get the boys into gaming)
as far as computer gaming…neversummer 4 (free, on-line multi-player is good d&d type gaming, but tc and sean have gotten hooked on city of heroes…
i am rambling, so …. but it’s good to see that you are feeling better and that comments are back.
    *hug*

Tsk, tsk, Biomekanic. . . telling tales out of school like that. You could’ve asked the poster of that thread if he’d mind reposting that snippet here.
Mostly, though, he’d be pissed off that he didn’t have a chance to post it here first.
He’d also probably refer to himself with a third-person pronoun in his comment here.
    . . .
Seriously, though: I’d love to see you, Wil, in a B5 project.
    Two great tastes, &c.

I will have to check out a preview on a gaming site. I am definately interested in buying.
Equipment lists and prestege classes would be neat if they are amde for aristocrats.
Any sneak peaks you could share Wil?
By the way, I liked your article in KODT… any more on the way? Nevermind the losers who disparage your new article in Dungeon, I look forward to it as a subscriber and did you know Monte Cook, the creator of 3edition links your site to his?

wow. it’s the best character in the movie i hate most right now. 😀 my little brother – five-year-old – made my mom buy Python for him from amazon.com – he loves that movie and i have to watch it every. single. day. sure it gets tiring but your character never fails to make me crack up. thanks for the amusement and yeah, python was a pretty bad movie. xD i loved you in TNG and stand by me is one of my favorite movies.

  28. Keith Coogan says:

Stop hatin’ on “Python”. It is my favorite Wil/Keith project. Forget “Tales from the Crypt”, forget “Toy Soldiers”, “Python” is where the real Wheaton/Coogan action is the best. I love watching my “Python” DVD. (which I purchased for like under $10) Yeah, it is a cheesy movie, but it was MEANT to be a cheesy movie. If you ask Billy Zabka, it’s the best darn snake movie out there. It’s the next “Lake Placid”. hahaha

D&D, well that brings back memories. Spacifically Desert Storm. Ya, believe it or not, we had the time and energy to play D&D, and Spades, and Nintendo Game Boys (Nintendo donated several to us). It’s amazing what you will do to pass the time when you are super bored, sitting in a tent, in the middle of the flippin desert!
