I just got back from an ACME meeting, where my sketch (a hyper-reality sketch about poker “tells”) totally killed!
Last time I pitched, I died horribly. I mean, I sucked out loud. I was that great big sucking sound Ross Perot talked about in 1992 . . . so it was great to get up there and give up some funny. Actually, just about everyone gave up some fantastic funny tonight, and I remembered why I tough it out even when my sketch writing sucks: I’m fiercely proud of the ACME, and I love being around the creative people who make up the company.
I’m currently crushed under deadlines, and trying to spin a thousand plates in exciting patterns, but I’m keeping notes on the numerous cool things that are happening right now. I’ll write them up when I get some of these deadlines behind me.
Until then, here’s a little bit of a poker story I’m working on in my “spare” time:
The small blind folds, and it’s folded to the button, who calls. The turn is the 4s. I think about all the hands I’ve had recently where I got killed: I can’t remember the last time AA held up for me, and I’ve had AK, KK, KJ —pretty much every starting hand from Group 1 and 2 — cracked so many times in limit games, I’m starting to hope for The Hammer. When a draw starts to look good, you know you’re in trouble . . .
From a far away place, someone picks up my hands, and shoves all my chips forward. At the same time, he opens my mouth, and says, “All-in.” The second mistake.
Gotta go. Morpheus is calling . . .

You know, its simply evil to give a lead in like that and leave us all hanging.
Damn you, tease! 😉
My Goodness. Your stories have been inspiring me lately. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a typical fangirl (My name is Danielle and I have a problem…). Hey, about everything you are crushed under, just keep at it, AND REMEMBER TO BREATHE AT THE SAME TIME. Because if you don’t breathe in the process, how can you accomplish anything? Just take one thing at a time and everything will eventually go smoothly. That’s what I always say. Then again, I’m only 18 and I yet to live a full life.
Now I am just rambling. Don’t listen to me anymore. L8rs and Good Luck
Love Always & GOD Bless, ~~*GooniegirlSumpter*~~
drip… drip… drip… Haven’t heard 10:15 on a Saturday Night by the Cure in a long time. Nice choice for a heading, Wil.
Looking forward to reading more of how it turned out when you went all in. Played in my first game of hold ’em on the 4th of July. I’ve played plenty of seved card, but am a newbie to the strategy of big/small blinds and community cards. For a $1/$2 limit game… I was up about 55 bucks at one point… but walked with just $10. Oh well… better to win a little gas money than to get knocked out.
Let us know if/when your Acme sketch will hit the stage!
Laters,
Ed
“seved card”??? Geez! It’s only 2:24AM… it’s not like its late or anything! Nice job with the proof reading, Ed. LOL
three posts… get ’em all in one, next time why don’t I???
Just noticed: Wil wrote: “I can’t remember the last time AA held up for me” The Alcoholics Anonymous hold ’em strategy hasn’t been working, huh? [lame joke… I know. All together now: “Groan”]
Well all I can say is. Don’t give up. Keep going and I’m so glad this comment thing is back up. I missed it alot.
Still gotta hand it to you, you really do inspire people and you probably don’t even realize it all the time. Do you. Well I enjoyed the fireworks story of july 4 (written on the 5th of july), 2002.
You keep it real Wil.

*twiddles thumbs*
btw…. try not to lose yourself in the madness right now okay?

Can’t wait to hear (or read…) the rest of the story!
Yeah. Don’t you just hate having pocket aces and losing to three deuces?
Hey Wil!! This is the first time I have wrote, but I have been viewing your site for some time now. I just wanted to try to get the boards behind the idea of getting you on “The Screensavers” on G4TechTV. I think you would be a great replacement for Pat now that he is gone. Please give it a try!! Thanks!
Nice, tell me your dropped the Hammer in that Celebrity home game?!?
Wil, you should totally talk to someone about getting in on the Celebrity Poker on Bravo! I watch them every week, and would be so excited to get to see you play! It’s all for charity, so everybody wins!!! Think about it, man!
Well, Pauly, wil said he’s not allowed to talk about the game, but he left at comment over at UFP saying he never saw The Hammer or he would have played it. The first time we get anyone on TV to play The Hammer, it will be a huge boon to poker bloggers everywhere!
Great tease, wil. I can’t wait to read the rest. And don’t worry, my poker writing doesn’t come close to yours so there’s no pressure!
All those poker sequences back on ST:TNG rubbed off on Wil (even though Wesley never got to play)!
There was a “West Wing” themed Celebrity Poker Showdown in Series 1, perhaps a ST-themed game in the near future.
oooOOOooOO – now Dave there is a great idea. One I’d love to see. I am so totally hooked on celebrity poker. Wil will rock on that show!
It makes my day whenever I “get” one of the title music references.
But I’d like to point out, because someone has to, that you can’t have the small blind fold, and then fold around to the button without YOU acting in between. Something is out of order.
Deadlines are good things, Wil. That means you’re busy, wokring, and generally being productive. Good thing!
You were the topic of conversation last night at the bar, we were discussing the World Series of Poker, and your recent participation in the Celebrity game for The Travel Channel. We’re all looking forward to that episode’s air date to find out how you did!
I like the lingo you used in the first part of that post. There was a lot of energy in that! Sounds like you’re really amped. Good to hear.
(Read… whatever.)
phriedom is right. I screwed up the order.
My bad.
Oh. Wait.
No I didn’t . . . I don’t think.
I was the Big Blind. So the small blind folded, everyone folded until the button, and then it was on me.
Right? Am I not remembering this correctly? I gotta start taking notes when I play.
My theory is that with more and more people taking up Texas Hold ‘Em, the odds are doing cartwheels in the cosmos. This means that when 7-2 offsuit used to be the worst hand because it only wins 1 out of every 65 bazillion hands, and now with 65 bazillion hands being played every 2 hours, 7-2 offsuit occurs more often than it used to.
Dammit, people, stop playing poker so I can get back to playing my Aces and feel like they mean something!!!!
🙂
2004 WSoP started broadcasts last night on ESPN…and I spent most of the first show explaining Texas Hold ‘Em to my dad-in-law.
Maybe I should just buy him a copy of “Positively 5th Street”…
Looking forward to your finishing that lead…and to the HHG on Travel Channel sometime in the not-too-distant future.
Now that I think of it . . . I must have been UTG.
Ugh. That’s what I get for posting a snip from a work in progress.
Okay. I’ll stop obsessing now.
Hmmm… you mention the turn, so we must be talking about action after the flop.
The small blind would be first to act, and you mention everyone folding to the button who calls. That means someone bet before the button, and if it was you, you had to be the small blind. Then the big blind folded and it was folded to the button who called, then the turn fell. Make sense?
Wil,
I am so excited! I got “THE E-MAIL” from Amazon.com yesterday. I can’t wait to read JAG. I’m not a poker fan, but maybe I’ll come to have a better appreciation of the game through you.
Sounds like you’ve been enjoying this fine summer. I bet LA is beautiful right about now. I’m glad your sketch went over so well. I would die if I had to present something like that in front of people. Actors truly have a gift. I’m surprised you haven’t commented on Scotty & his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Then again you might not know the man so well except maybe at cons or while watching the Wrath of Khan. You haven’t had a wrestling match with a crazy kids character such as Barney in a long time too. I thought that was too much fun. Will getting jiggy with his people. Then again that was a million years ago now. Might be fun to wrestle with someone dressed up as Shatner for charity. As usual I’m completely off topic. Good luck with your deadlines & life.
CJ’s right, since you had already seen the flop, obviously the small blind had the first move. Of course, why he would fold and not check is the confusing part.
/lost last night on an All-In to pocket Aces against my open ended straight draw.
Okay, I don’t know jack diddly squat about poker so I’ll complain about Amazon instead. I pre-ordered JAG and somehow they forgot about me. I’ve ordered one already, so with my luck I’ll have two of them. If I do end up with two, will you sign one for me?
I really must learn how to play poker…
Good stuff Wil! Can’t wait to hear the rest
I feel a little dense; how does the tap drip-drip-dripping relate to this?
By the way, all Cure allusions are thoroughly appreciated (and in fact make me a little giddy).
Wil,
So, your into string us along like a day time soap. We might stay tuned.
FG
I have been a long time reader of your site and have enjoyed the journey with you along the way from ‘Stand by Me’ and ‘ST’. etc. In return here’s a thought for future reference perhaps Will. You could try out your improv at the bear pit madhouse that is the Edinburgh Fringe.

I will try and get copies of your books on this side of the Atlantic,
Cheers,
Lachlan.
