50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

dancing in the deepest oceans

Posted on 21 September, 2004 By Wil

Anne walked into my office, and proudly pointed to the T-shirt she was wearing. It said “I [heart] my geek.”
“Is that true?” I said, “Do you really love your geek?”
“I do when he gets off the computer so we can go take care of our errands.” She said.
I stood up, and kissed her nose. “Okay,” I said, “I just have to change my shirt and we can go.”

“What’s wrong with the shirt you have on right now?” She said.
“Look at it,” I said.
“There are only ten types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don’t.”
“Right.” I said, “I need to change this.”
“Why?” She said.
“Because it’s like you’re wearing a shirt that says ‘I’m with stupid,’ and if I wear this shirt . . .”
“Oh. You’re him.” she said.
I laughed, and walked into our bedroom. I returned wearing my Vandals T-shirt.
“Now everyone will wonder who your geek is!” I said.
She looked at me for a moment and replied, “Uhm. Probably not. But I still love you.”
I held her hand the entire time we were out.
After we got home, I went for a run through my neighborhood. The sun was beginning to set, and a light breeze shook a few leaves from the trees over my head.
“Mother Nature thinks it’s October,” I thought, “I like that.”
I reached the corner, and turned down a new street. A car pulled up next to me and honked.
“Well, hello there, Mister Wheaton,” said the driver, one of my very friendly neighbors, “How are you?”
“I’m well,” I said.
“And how is your beautiful wife?”
I smiled and said, “She’s beautiful!”
Because she is.
When I got home, I walked into the dining room. Anne sat at the table, and giggled as she read The Onion.
“Do you know how much I love you?” I said.
She looked up at me, smiled, and held up two fingers.
I shook my head.
She held up four fingers.
I shook my head.
She held up ten fingers.
I shook my head, and held my arms out at my sides, palms open. “This much,” I said.
“That’s an awful lot,” she said.
“Yeah, it sure is.”

    That’s so cool!
I swear I’m not making this up: when I came home from work yesterday, my wife gave me that shirt as a present. I’d seen it years ago in someone’s .sig, and told everyone I could find.
    Awesome!
[Side note: Thought about wearing that one to interview a prospective cantidate for our group today. I don’t know that his english is going to be up for that one, so I opted for the T-shirt that came with the Robotech game for PlayStation 2 instead.]

My wife owns an ‘I Love My Geek’ shirt, I never thought about what I’m wearing when she has it on. Normally it’s a Megatokyo, Real Life Comics or MC Frontalot.
No wonder my freinds think I’m a bit sad 🙂

Life is good in geekville when our wives understand us. I myself have been blessed with a wife who some would say is, herself, a geek. She loves RPG video games. She wants to go out and get an X Box now just because of Fable! Can’t say I blame her. It looks fantastic. I need to get her one of those I (heart) My Geek shirts, though.

I so, so needed to read something like this, this morning.
On our walk around the neighborhood last night, through the cooling almost autumn air, my sweetie told me to quit reading news sites for awhile because I was becoming filled with anxiety.
So take a break and check out favorite web sites that make you feel like there is good in the world, he said So I just did, and now I do.
Life is really so simple. All each of us really need is someone we can love and trust.
    Thanks, Wil.

    Darn you.

I’ve always had partners who loved their geek. It is a good thing. There’s a goofiness in such a relationship (e.g. “Now everyone will wonder who your geek is!” “Uhm. Probably not. …”) that I absolutely love. Other people sometimes don’t understand it (I had a boss who felt I was whipped or that I shouldn’t be goofy or something once. I don’t think he ever clued in that there’s strength in being goofy. Or whatever.), but who cares?

It’s something geeks put in the water, I think. How else to explain that I get all fluttry when mine starts talking about bilabial fricatives in conlangs?

My boyfriend (a total Trekkie and geek) gave me that t-shirt over Labor Day weekend. I laughed out loud, and thought (and still think) it was the best present I’ve ever received. I’m looking forward to wearing it in concert with one of his Transformer or code shirts.
Today he pointed me in this direction. I am so happy for you and Anne, Wil. There are way too many girls out there who have yet to figure out that geeks are the best kind of significant others, and that their geekiness is what makes them so valuable.

I got my wife one of those shirts. She got me the GEEKISSEXY (KISS in red) for Valentine’s Day. I rarely wear mine, but she wore hers. Now that it doesn’t fit her anymore, she cut hers up and put it on a jacket and gets asked about it all the time.
Kinda cute to hear stories about random people asking “So who’s your geek?”

  26. Morwenna Caddy says:
    21 September, 2004 at 9:29 am

    *sniff* That’s beautiful.
And strange, but true, my son wore that shirt the other day (he’s 23), and much to his shock, I actually knew how to read it correctly.

I love to read it when you talk about Anne! You two are so wonderfully perfect for each other! Maybe my husband and I should get each other that shirt, seeing as we are both geek minded and still crazy in love after over 20 years! 😉

  32. Carrie says:
    21 September, 2004 at 10:39 am

Way to go Ann. As a geek wife who proudly wears her “I (heart) My Geek” t-shirt, I’ve got to say that is a great story. My husband is almost always wearing a linux oriented tshirt, so it is obvious that’s he’s my geek. We combined a romantic weekend at a B&B with WizardWorld Texas last year for a truly geeky and sappy experience. Geek wives rule!

  33. jack says:
    21 September, 2004 at 10:41 am

I didn’t realize there were so many of us lucky geeks out there who buy these shirts for our significant others! Either that or the world has gotten that much smaller…
Ingrid, the shirts are for sale at http://www.thinkgeek.com (come on, Wil’s got a sponsored link on this page!)

  34. Bill Korb says:
    21 September, 2004 at 10:53 am

Wil, I have a “10 kinds of people” shirt, too (from thinkgeek.com). I, however, love wearing it in public – I enjoy watching the reaction on people’s faces when they read it and try to figure out its meaning. Most people’s eyes just glaze over when I try to explain it to them.
My wife likes it, too, now that I’ve explained it to her. It’s fun being a geek. 😉

  35. Tracy says:
    21 September, 2004 at 10:54 am

Wil I think that it is just fantastic that you and Anne love each other so much and still act like newlyweds. It is such a rare thing these days.

    OH! MY! GOD!
    Way to go Wheaton! >:#
Make me look like an unthoughtful dork.
    NICE!
Really though, that is a nice little slice of life. It makes me want to call up my wife and make up for the big fight we had last night.
I think for it to really hit the mark though, she would have to read this first.
    🙂
You guys are so cute it makes my teeth fall out.
[tangent]BTW, converted a longtime trek fan. got him to read D.B. and I will be lending him JAG in a day or so. One reader at a time. [/tangent]

Whoa, its cold and dark right now in Holland (at 20:20) and it is storming and raining. Hey i think i will put on my OpenBSD T-shirt and see how my wife will react. Nah, just kidding (not about the weather though, it is realy nasty outside).
Will, i realy hope you know how LUCKY you are (just as i am after 13 years off mairiage and still in love). Darn, i know i am typing things the wrong way. Grammar is (i think) improving, but it still sucks, don’t it ?.
Anyway, \m/ rock on and keep on rocking dude.
As a new and far away friend would say, vaia con dios.
(Freeman, was that correct spelling right ?)
    Lots of love,

Love the story Wil, but I have to make one Uber Geek correction… It should be “there are 10 kinds of people” otherwise the joke doesn’t quite work (ten being 1010 in binary, 10 being two). Sorry, just the Computer Engineer in me coming out. I’ll go put him back in the closet now.

    Greetings,
    Oh… *sniff*
The first thing I did, outside of wiping a tear away, was to tell my fiance (online, of course) to go here, and see if anything was…familiar. 🙂
It’s a lovely, loving, sweet, and silly story. Just the way it should be.
My fiance and I always wonder if we’re weird (almost certainly true, but…), being pretty regularly relaxed with each other, and saccharine, sappy, and silly. Nearly everyone else we know treats relationships like business deals, or something, so serious, so much tension… The voluntary peek into another the happiness of another geek helps mitigate that a lot.
    Thank you for sharing that!

  48. Wayne Heyward says:

That could SO easily have been a conversation between me and my wife. Ain’t it fun being both married and *still* madly in love with each other?

I love that joke about “10 kinds of people…” I will have to get that shirt.
Talk about displaying your geekiness- I once saw a car with the license plate “su root”. That was cool.

🙂 Oh I’m all Piglet smiles now!! I love it when you write these stories.
‘Course, now I got Queen’s “Somebody to Love” running through my head, but that’s okay.
Super sweet story Wil, well done!
