Around 6:30 PM Pacific Time tonight, I’m going to be on Your Mac Life to talk about Just A Geek, my iBook woes (and what looks like a very positive resolution to said woes), and some other geeky goodness.
Details on the show, like how you can listen and stuff, are in the link above.
As I did last time I was on the radio, I’ll probably update this entry with a running critique of my performance.
Update: There weren’t any breaks, so I can’t do a running commentary . . . so I’ll just assess: I felt good. I think I was able to talk about the book enough to promote it, but also not just shill for it, you know?
I also said “You know?” WAY too many times. I am *so* from The Valley (really, I am.)
I felt a good rapport with Shawn, the host, which is always a bonus. I was a little surprised that he was so stricken by the honesty of my book . . . I mean, I knew it was honest because I wrote it, but that’s a theme that keeps coming back around: readers are stunned by how honest and direct I am in it. Maybe we (me, O’Reilly, and my publicist) should be talking about that in the marketing?
Anyway, I am mostly happy with the show. I can’t sit here and pick out any major moments that I liked or hated, which usually means that I was focused, and didn’t suck out loud.
Cool!

Should be a great ‘view.
Will this be archived online? I only have dialup at home (still!) so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow when I can get back to work to listen.
I know what I’ll be doing when I get home from work tonight. Listening to a great archived show!
I also only have dial up at home! Dont feel bad.
I would also like to know if it will be archived.
Good luck on the show tonight.. not that you need it.. but there it is anyway.. just be sure to let them get those ads in this time hmm? 😉
I will be checking this out-cool, a fellow-Mac user!
C
How fun! I was wondering what happened to your iBook. 🙂 I’ll check it out tonight on my flat-panel iMac.
I really wish that I would have forked over the money for a PowerBook so I could have a little mobility. I love my iMac but I don’t like being stuck in my office. I’m a little leary of the iBooks, especially after hearing your problems. I hope your iBook story has a Happy Ending.
First, the archive question — yeah, the show is archived, but only for a week. Go to http://www.yourmaclife.com and click on the “listen to the show now” icon, which then plays the last show as a Quicktime file. No MP3 version; I imagine they got rid of that when they signed their subscriber deal with Audible.com.
As for faulty iBooks, I’ve had a few problems with my three-year-old one. The screen used to screech horribly when opened, at one point the internal power jack failed. Both happened under warrenty, and both were promptly fixed by Apple.
I haven’t had any problems since, despite some pretty heavy abuse. Disasters my iBook has survived include being Frisbee’d across the kitchen after tripping over the cord, being flipped off of a rocking chair after my wife tilted the chair forward without realizing the computer was there, and having the keyboard dunked in soda by my toddler daughter (thankfully, the iBook’s keyboard pops out with little effort; if it had been a PC I would probably have been doomed).
Fortunately, all of the hits the iBook sustained involved it landing flat; I think even it would have had a hard time surviving an edge-on impact.
I hope that I won’t get in trouble. I found a cute pic of you, Wil, and I posted it on my weblog. So. the link is suppressed, right? I don’t know if you have access to it… but, anyway. Whatev. I’m just a fangirl.
Woot! Something to look forward for to chase away the middle of the week blues! I just hope my meeting doesn’t run into overtime! :^)
Finally! An appearance I can listen to!
Wow. I just found you’re blog, and its a pleasure to know that I’m not the only geek out there. Hope you don’t mind but I added a link to you from my own website http://www.geocities.com/nautical_nerds/index.html
Stay cool daddy-o
Best of luck. Although if it’s half as good as the last radio interview, you’ll be great.
Break a leg! or is it break a tonsil?
Just do well Wil.
To “The Yellow Dart” any relation to the Strongbad’s The Yellow Dart?
Good luck Will…and remember to listen for the commericials! 🙂
The RealPlayer links to the streaming video and audio from YourMacLife.com won’t work with the last version of RealPlayer written for Mac OS 9.2.2. Bummer.
Maybe I can play it after the fact as a QuickTime file.
Sorry, Unca Willie. I tried to watch or listen live, I really did.
I’ve viewing the live stream via QuickTime right now.
You just have to open QuickTime first and plug in the URL for it to open.
Interview just started
listening to you NOW, watching thru the quicktime video….SOUNDS AWESOME!! kick Apples butt ! 😛
anyone havin probs just need to open yer QUICKTIME and then type in the
it should pop the video right up, great sound quality
Listening/watching right now..you are doing great.
Ah, only just found out abotu it. Missed most of the interview. Now I need to know what apple might do to help you out with your iBook. Do post that to the site when you get it all fixed!!!
Thanks!
Melissa
You were great Wil. Still have the best voice.
Great radiocast Wil! Enjoyed it very much.
Awesome job Wil. Please be sure to update us on when your episode of the World Poker Tour will be airing. I am still waiting on Just A Geek to show up at the Barnes & Noble here in Naples Florida.
Sounded good. Lots of energy. Shawn sounded kinda sick so you really carried the interview. Don’t get a chance to hear you much, but love the fact that you are so genuine. Fellow iBook user and I agree they’re freakin’ great. Keep up the fantastic website.
matt
The radio interview was great.
I enjoyed listening to you!
Keep up the good work!!!
I received “Dancing” and “Just a Geek” from Amazon through UPS yesterday. I devoured “Dancing” in two sittings and enjoyed it a lot.
BTW: Don’t you just love delivery services? Click, buy, deliver. BOOM. Since I live in the hinterlands it is vital to my sanity.
I’m looking forward to sitting down with “Geek” later tonight. I realized in reading “Dancing” how envious I was of you. (We are about 6 months apart in age.) I never disliked your character; actually I related to the awkwardness of being in an adult world. You could write the character better than the series writers ever could. They should have consulted YOU because you seemed to be living a parallel life with Wesley as a young actor among adults.

The honesty of your writing is what makes it entertaining and engaging. It makes me want to write as bravely as you do.
i caught part of the interview and you sounded fine…you came off as confident and relaxed…and you’re very easy to listen to…some guests on interview programs try too hard to be cool and funny…with you it seems natural.
This was the first interview of yours that I watched/listened to and let me say you done good. This might tick some people off but you were much better than Rich Siegel. Your interview was engaging and well, of the caliber we usually get from your site and audioblog (most of the time :)). Nice job!
Wil said, “I also said “You know?” WAY too many times. I am *so* from The Valley (really, I am.)”
What I’ve noticed from just listening to you on these audios isn’t in the words you say. It’s your accent, or maybe I should say your way of speaking. It’s only because I was listening to someone else on the radio who sounded just like you and it turned out he was from “The Valley” also. I never realized you had an “accent” before hearing that other person. Interesting things you discover when you can only hear someone’s voice and not see them.
I was struck by your take on what is “creative”, that is in terms of the subjective appraisal of the content you produce…and being comfortable with where you find yourself now.
I used to think that if I didn’t have work in my book from major clients, and was thusly recognised by my peers by a wall full of design awards, I hadn’t produced anything worthy. Nothing truly “creative”. It took me into my thirties — and much crushing disappointment — to realize that I could be happy with doing work for small clients, not win a bunch of big-time design awards, and find a place where I was content with what I was doing. I found that I could be confidant that the work was indeed worthy; indeed, it was probably more meaningful to the people I created it for in the end than all the huge accounts I never got to work on.
“I just don’t wanna suck”. Well, if you’re having a hoot at what’re doing chances are good that you don’t.
Well done, boyo!
Nag.
Hey Wil!
I’d be hesitant about marketing the book as being really honest… Maybe have it mentioned (isn’t it already? Can’t remember the tagline for the book) in one or two places, but if you run around saying, “Look, it’s my book! And it’s really honest!” people start wondering why you’re emphasising the honesty so much… 🙂
Just my .02.
Shawn King is sick and everyone around me is also sick.
he’s been to europe.
i am getting a G5 iMac despite the crappy 5200Ultra GPU because i don’t need the GPU for Final Cut Pro, or eMagic Logic 6 or Apple’s Xcode, and everything in OS 10.4 is supported by the 5200Ultra.
Hey Wil funny to hear your on a mac site 😉
Maybe this question is answered somewhere in your archived blogs, but I’ll ask it anyway and see if you answer. 🙂
Why Mac? Why don’t you have a Dell or run Windows XP? Actually I have a Mac at home and use a PC at work. What’s your story? Or maybe I should listen to the archived interview and see if you mentioned it there.
Wil,
You should really consider sending a copy of both books to Oprah. ; )
Hell, if you get on Oprah and she makes it one of her book club books, it’ll market itself!
I agree with another poster that you shouldn’t emphasize the honesty too much. Let book critics do that for you.
The main thing is that you’ve got to get the bookstores to take your books out of the “Star Trek” section and put them in “Biography,” – better yet in the “Recommended Reading” section.
I recommended it to one of the cashiers at Borders, in Ft. Lauderdale, in hopes that he’ll put it in THAT store’s “Recommended Reading” section.
Word of mouth can do wonders.
Great job Wil! I’ll second the suggestion that you should let others (i.e. not you, O’Reilly, etc.) continue to be amazed at the honesty of your work. Once you start promoting the honesty, it can seem disingenuous.
Let the word of mouth do that work for you.
🙂
J
Ditto on the voice comment.
Ditto on the honesty.
I finished JAG in one sitting. Loved it. It’s made my list of favorite books. Word of mouth will do the trick. I’m pretty much giving everyone I know a copy for the holidays. It would be nice if they were signed copies….
Hey! ditto on all of the book comments. ive stopped going to the star trek section of most book stores because it makes me depressed that im missing half of them. (thats how big of a star trek geek i am) anyhoo. i didnt even know that you had written JAG or Dancing until the vegas con. i read JAG on the plane ride home to Ohio and when i got home went strait to this stite. ive been hooked since!
I thought the interview was great but to be honest, if you hadn’t posted that you would be there i wouldn’t have even known that the site even existed. You have to call Oprah!
I think you are generally honest and direct in the book, which is unusual in biographical material because so many authors seek only to see themselves in a favourable light and cannot admit weakness or self doubt.
If you went on Oprah, just make sure that she doesn’t present you as a child-star! I’m sure you know that. Cuz, everyone’s already seen too many of those shows about child stars and where they are now! Bleck! That’s the prollem.
Thanks, Wil! I’ve read both of your books and I just finished listening to the archive of your interview on Your Mac Life. I think you did a great job of fielding Shawn’s questions as well as representing both of your books. Your honesty is very refreshing. Again, thanks.
Shawn is a great guy. We went to college together and he was one crazy guy back then. I figured he would make a good radio host because he loved to hear himself talk! Thanks for the trip down memory lane, I’ll have to send him and email and hassle him. Great site by the way and I’m looking forward to the arrival soon of JAG in my mailbox. Keep up the great work!
Wow, here’s a blast from the past. I used to listen to Shawn’s radio show years ago when it was “The Mac Show”. I got to know him when we were both listmoms of the Mac-L mailing list… yikes, was this really over five years ago?? Lots of time and priority changes since then, and now I rediscover his show via one of my favorite blogs. Cool to see he’s still pulling in guests of substance. 🙂
here’s a link that might help those on dial up listen to the interview…

You should see my post in the forums with a quicktime controller ready to start at the beginning of Wil’s interview, and descriptions of other parts of the show. If the link above doesn’t work – I set it as my url so click on my name
OMG, so *like* there is *like* nothing wrong with *like* being from the valley, *you know?*
I moved to SD not to long ago, and I *like* so miss my peeps out there. I don’t miss the triple digit temperatures though.
yer blog rawks!
Okay, I’m pissed off because IE at work is only 5.0 which means I can’t check my new Gmail account :X so I’m here instead catching up post-move.
Shawn King is a pretty cool dude; met him briefly at MacWorld SF a year or so ago, though he probably wouldn’t know me from Eve. Reminds me, any chance of a NoCal roadie come January? Maybe mix in a few book appearances, then take in a day on the Moscone floor…North Hall is usually where the Gaming Pavilion is, but you can wander over to South and see what people use to do real work. 😉 Since I started going to MacWorld, the spouse hasn’t had to buy a single T-shirt. 😀
Damn, I’ve gotta get my TV set up so I can get cable and high-speed Internet; I think I can budget enough out of my paycheck to cover it. 🙂
Later…
