fossilize apostle and I comb it with a rake

  • Uncategorized

It sounds like lots of people have been tuning into the stream of my performance from Gnomedex, and enjoying it. That rules!
There was a suggestion in the comments from the last post that I should do each chapter live, and put the whole thing together into a collection of “live” performances. My friend Jim actually suggested something like that to me about a year ago, and I’ve been planning to do it with Dancing Barefoot. The plan is to set up four performances down at the ACME theatre (two a night for two nights) and then cut together the best stuff. The results of that recording will be “Dancing Barefoot — Live” or something spiffy like that.
I know I’ve mentioned the Just A Geek audiobook before, but it’s almost finished! David Lawrence has been helping me produce it, and we’re about 50% completed. I’m working on it some more tonight, right after I’m on The David Lawrence Show. (David and I are going to talk a lot of politics and stuff, which should be interesting because we agree on most things, but sharply differ on others.)
I just started Sean Astin’s book, and even though I’m only 18 pages into it, I am having a hard time putting it down. Wouldn’t it be cool if Sean and I did some book signings and things together? When I finish his book, I’m going to call him and suggest it.

    Hey, what’s Sean’s book about?

  2. wil says:

    It’s mostly about LOTR, but so far he’s talking about how he got there. It’s weird to read these stories that I remember experiencing second-hand, filled with people who I either knew, or knew of.
    Cool, but weird.

    Guess you’re just going to have to release a videobook!

    I just listened to your WHOLE reading at Gnomedex (I am at home with a cold today). I really don’t know what Gnomedex is, and maybe this is why I am so confused… Why weren’t they laughing more? I was laughing, and I don’t think it’s just the cough syrup talking.

    Judging by the comments on Amazon I think you’re better off doing your own book signings.

  8. Russ says:

    Hey, that’s a novel idea…
    Get it?
    Novel.
    HAR!

    Sean and Wil tag-team book signing? grrrr. All the cool stuff happens right when I leave the country!

    Well, he’s not nearly the author you are but I’d take a road trip for a book signing…and I think it’s great that you’re finally going to call him!

    Sean’s book was very interesting read. I finished it in about two days.
    I definitely agree, you should look into doing some book events with him. I had a few friends at his first signing tonight in NYC, and they said it went very well.
    And too bad you didn’t make it about 12 more pages before you took your break. Because at that point, your name gets a mention. 🙂

  13. Jared says:
    13 October, 2004 at 7:05 pm

    So you’re gonna make me actually use the internet and search around for Sean’s book myself? C’mon man, that’s what the linkylinky thing is for (plus, you could get the Amazon Associates commission for the sale if I buy it!) 😉

  14. angie k says:

    Yes, you should fish that number of his out of that jacket it’s stuffed in and call him. Then, at the book tours, you can have your action figures fight. I do believe a phaser can take a hobbit sword anyday…
    You know, since now the both of you are writing, I want “Toy Soldiers: Behind the Scenes”. Hm… maybe, maybe not… You could then write the chapter Wesley-haters wanted for years, “And then they shot my character…” (So sad that I refused to finish the movie the first time I watched it.)
    The live readings are just fantastic!
    cheers!

  15. Mike C says:
    13 October, 2004 at 7:27 pm

    That would be very cool.
    I just saw Toy Soldiers on TV a few days ago and was reminded of one of your co-stars, Shawn Phelan, who died in a car accident.

  16. Brad Kimberly says:
    13 October, 2004 at 7:45 pm

    Yeah, Wil… I’m interested in knowing whether you ever DID actually pull the number out of the jacket pocket before beginning his book.
    Have you heard from him since you published your books? You wrote some extremely kind things about him, and I was curious if Sean had any reaction to making a cameo in your writings.

  17. Neph says:
    13 October, 2004 at 7:47 pm

    Thats a great idea. I didn’t know Sean had a book out.. I guess he will have you to thank for a few referral sales. 😉

  18. Adrienne says:

    If you and Sean do end up arranging a joint signing tour, I’ll be the happiest reader alive.

  19. Fleur says:

    I think it would be very odd reading an autobiography of sorts by someone I knew directly or closely indirectly. I guess it’s like seeing your friends on screen acting…

    See, now I have to go and read Sean’s book. Dagnabit! 🙂 From the looks of the reviews on Amazon, Sean seems to be having the trouble with some readers assuming he’d only talk about LOTR. But, I guess you get that kinda trouble too, Wil.

    I hope this isn’t the first time you’ve called Sean since we nagged you about it before. Please say you actually called him this time.
    Thanks for telling us about Sean’s book. I hadn’t heard he had one out. And yes, you need a link to his book. Do you only get credit for your books, or can you get a little something if we buy anything from Amazon if we clicked thru your site?

    How about “Dancing Barefoot… And Naked”? Live, raw DB. Just a thought.
    Just got done listening to the Gnomedex presentation. Not your best work? Come ON! “Sorry, I was watching the debates.” Comedy GOLD! Great job, even the little hiccups. How do you think Conan O’Brian got his career? Making mistakes into part of the act. Can’t wait to get the AudioBook.

  29. Keith Coogan says:
    14 October, 2004 at 1:32 am

    I’ll tell you all about “Toy Soldiers” behind the scenes. The wall they built to join two existing buildings to create a quad cost over a million dollars to build. At any given time there were at least two helicopters hovering over our trailers. The Days Inn is a great place to stay… but the only fun was crossing the street (at risk of life and limb) and going to K-mart/Krogers to shop and fool around with merchandise. We really didn’t notice it turn into “a bunch of guys stuffed in a dorm room in their underwear” until it was too late. (It was hot!) Also, and I think Sean and Wil will agree, those were fought-after roles for all of us, and we appreciated being there with each other. Lou and Denholm, R. Lee and Dan were all great hero’s, role models and friends. And that’s all I have to say about that.
    P.S. Hey Wil, where does the pool furniture belong?

    ~~~~~Wil, if you did a booksigning with Sean, and I got to go… Wow, what a fun day that would be!! 🙂 I think it’s a fabulous idea, and I really hope you call him. For those of you who might want to see Sean this weekend, he’s going to be at the Boston Museum of Science. There’s a LoTR exhibit there that ends on Oct. 24. This weekend, Sean will be doing a booksigning (the store there has plenty of copies of his book). My hubby and I were there this past weekend- I would have liked to have gone when Sean was there, but my band is opening up for Rick Springfield that night!! 🙂 So, Wil, now you have to have a co-booksigning with Sean, just so I can meet you both. 🙂 Call him RIGHT NOW, and let us know what he says.
    Oh, saw you on E! last night. They did a special about Child Stars of the 80’s. Great interview! Made me laugh!
  33. iyyak says:
    I think a dual book signing is a great idea. I believe he’s doing the LA scene in early November. I’m volunteering all day at the Boston Museum of Science book signing this weekend (I’d arrive early if you’re coming!). Wonder if I can work that idea into conversation. Perhaps if I ask him what the last book he read was, ’cause if he asks me it’s Just a Geek! 🙂
  34. Jeanine says:
    I would travel serious miles at great personal expense to have the opportunity to have the both of you sign your books for me. Did I mention serious miles – Cleveland, Ohio serious. Keep us posted. (I already have the picture you donated to My Cat Ranch(Thank you very much.) But I really need your autograph on my copy of Dancing Barefoot and Just a Geek to round out my collection !)
    Hey Wil,
    I still think you’ve got one of the most lovely and distinct voices in the world and love to listen to it. Really enjoying listening to part one and two.
    You and Sean Astin had better do tours in Canada. You’ve got thousands of fans up here. I didn’t know he had a book out. I’ll have to read it too.
    Thanks for sharing yourself with everyone. We sure appreciate your honesty about your life. You certainly have changed for the better and that’s truly amazing to me.
    Lots of Love
    Y’know, you and Sean should sit down and put together a flick. He’s got the directorial chops and seems to be a decent screenwriter; you’re an author and general tech geek; you’re both kickass actors.
    Anywho:
    Rock, rock on, Cheat Commando Wil Wheaton. (Dude, you should totally drop a line to the Bros. Chaps and ask to be the equivalent of Sergeant Slaughter in GI Joe.)
    Yeah, you NEED to come to Canada. Then I can be all fan girl and freak out.. errr.. I mean, then your many fans up here can finally get a chance to meet the guy who’s website and books they can’t stop reading! Yeah!
    Would be best if you’d come to Edmonton, but we’ll roadtrip to BC or something if we have to…
    If you ever get down to Florida (i think we are done with the storms for this season) Please stop in Jacksonville and make an appearance!!!!
    Going to get your book today 🙂
  46. wil says:
    14 October, 2004 at 9:16 am
    Keith: In the pool, of course.
    Most people don’t know this, but when we made the movie, I spent more time hanging out with Keith than anyone else. I was just 18, and trying on my Big Boy pants for the first time in my life, and Keith was right there for all the cool stuff . . . and most of the lame stuff, too.
    Remember Dead Milkmen? The Naming of Yogurt? The Speeding Ticket on the way to DC? Slot cars?
    We had some really good times behind the scenes, but we also took the acting aspect of it very seriously.
    Hey, we should get together with a minidisc recorder, and have a conversation about Toy Soldiers. That would be cool.
  47. Travis says:
    Spiffy? …that’s such a great word, YAY! (writers like random words, it comes with the territory) You should make “Dancing Barefoot-Live” That would be (teen girl squad voice) so good! I’m reading Sean’s book too, it’s really great isn’t it?
