50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

i shine, i’m freshly minted

  • Uncategorized

Quick announcement: This Sunday, the 24th of October, I will be appearing at the Grand Opening of a brand new Borders in the Santa Anita Mall.
Check out what Borders says on their website:

Join us for a discussion and signing with this ever-popular actor turned writer. Despite early stardom in the motion picture Stand By Me, and his role as Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wil left Hollywood in pursuit of happiness on an extended hiatus from acting to write full time. In his newest book, Just a Geek, Wil shares his deeply personal and difficult journey to find himself with stories that reveal an honesty and disarming humanity.

I’ll be reading from and signing Just A Geek, and Dancing Barefoot, and I’ll do my best to read fast, so I can take questions. Also, if you’re a WWdN reader, I’ll have a few “WWdN Monkey” ribbons that are leftover from Linucon, and a couple of the “Heart of the Anomaly” cards for Star Munchkin, too.
I’m really looking forward to this event — I grew up about 20 miles away from this mall, and I used to go there often when I was a kid, so I feel like I’m closing the circle here, this time as a “local” author.
The weekend was awesome. I started out with some ADR work on Teen Titans Friday morning, for Titans East Parts One and Two . . . holy shit. It’s not secret that I love Teen Titans, and it’s no secret that I’m fiercely proud of my work there . . . but holy shit holy shit holy shit. The episodes just keep getting better and better, and this story arc is the best I’ve been in so far. It’s dark, it’s a little scary, and the animation is SO FREAKING COOL! I actually had my very first “cool, dry superhero” line on Friday. I got to say, “Something tells me you guys don’t like water . . .” right before I . . . uh, I mean, Aqualad does some seriously cool superhero stuff. I can’t wait to see this episode when it airs.
Friday afternoon, I went over to the set of a movie to do some research for a magazine article that I’m writing — yeah, you read that correctly: I get to write a magazine article! I can’t say anything more than this: I’m entering some new territory with this piece, and it’s going to totally rock when it’s done.
Friday night, Anne and I took the kids to Knott’s Halloween Haunt. She and I have gone almost every year for the last decade, and I’ve been going since I was 14 . . . but it’s the first time we took the kids. It was super cool, because they’re old enough to have fun getting scared in the mazes, but not too old to be embarrassed about going with their parents. We didn’t get home until after 2 a.m., and we all slept until 10 on Saturday.
Saturday was another big day, because Ryan was going to his very first High School dance Saturday night. He had been excited about it for three weeks, but I wonder if it was as important to him as it was significant to me and Anne . . . I remember when Ryan’s feet couldn’t touch the floor when he sat at the dinner table. We drove him and his friends, and they all had a great time. Again, we finally got into bed after 2am.
Sunday we slept as late as we could, and spent the day cleaning our house. Sunday afternoon we watched Nolan play in his basketball league, and by dinnertime last night, we were all ready to fall asleep!
I was able to stay awake until about 9:30, but I was so wiped out from the weekend, I fell asleep during the ALCS. That’s a pretty big deal, since I’m a huge baseball weenie. I’m hoping for a Red Sox / St. Louis World Series, if you care about that sort of thing.
So it was a great weekend, and I can’t believe that it’s already 9am on Monday. I’m off for some voice over auditions, then I’m actually working on a game this afternoon. I don’t think I’m allowed to say what it is, yet, but it’s an established title in a successful franchise. It should be extra fun.
updated: Whoops. I keep forgetting to mention this: the audition I had a few weeks ago was for CSI:Miami. I did a *really* good job, and I probably would have booked it, but they changed the part from male to female. When my manager told me that, I said, “Well, can I go back there in a wig and a dress?”
“We’re not quite to that point in the career, Wil,” he said.
Har. Har. Har.

New Cake album rocks, wil. I can’t get Dime out of my head. Good stuff.

Congrats on the book signing and the article…that’s awesome, can’t wait to read it. Now you just need to make your way up to the great white North for a book signing and I’m all set…

Is this the two-part episode of Teen Titans you mentioned a while ago, or a new two-parter? There must be some fan input on Aqualad if they keep bringing him in for these bigger episodes. And you know what that means: More Uncle Willie! Rock!
Sounds like you had a pretty full weekend. Looks like it’s cool to be Wil these days! Kudos!

Yeah, watch what you say about those awesome projects you’re doing … I remember last time you told us a *little* of the cool stuff you were auditioning for, and somebody reported that you’d actually be *in* it, so they almost like sued you or something! :\ Stupid NDAs and such.

Woohoo! I finally get to see a live reading. Thanks for the post!
It’s a good thing you went to the Haunt on Friday night. My friends and I went on Saturday night. Can you believe they sold out? Two of my friends were dumb and didn’t get their tickets ahead of time so they went home. I live across the street from Knott’s and haven’t seen them sell out a night since I was in high school, which was eight years ago. Then, by 10:30pm it was raining and by midnight it was pouring. We stuck it out till 1:30, but when we saw the first flash of lightning it was time to go!
The most ironic part of the night was when a bunch of my friends, who live in the valley, decided to stay over and the power went out an hour after we got home!

Great, now I have to clean the pop off my monitor. Funny stuff 🙂

Damn Wil, when are you going to slow down? You have the Dallas Comic Con on Saturday, then you are appearing at Santa Anita Mall *the next day*?? I’m glad you are getting all these bookings, but don’t burn yourself out, dude.
I love the news about the Teen Titans gig; I guess I’m going to have to make myself a reminder so I watch or tape it. Too bad about CSI: Miami, but if you did well on that one maybe they’ll call you back for another part.
    See you Saturday!

Hey I just bounced over from Amazom.com.. reading praiseworthy reviews of your book(s)from a fellow bookcrossers WISHLUST, (I mean wishlist).I had to do a whole paradigm shift Wil as sentient grown up.. (Like Steve Burns- Blues Clues- now musician)(I’m a huge fan of bookcrossing.com) Love your Blog. I’m off to tell her about your bookreading/signing– Hmmm…just a short road trip from SD. If you haven’t already- you should check out which of your books have “travelled” and where. They travel (like where’s george dollar concept)often int’l and it’s great fun to see comments and reviews of the books journey. Off to update MY wishlist 😀

You know, I was SO into this entry (the first I’ve read in a little while, to be honest) and THEN I saw “I’m hoping for a Red Sox / St. Louis World Series, if you care about that sort of thing.”
*CRY* I DO care about that sort of thing! I want a (Red Sox/Yankees) / ASTROS World Series. Don’t you think Clemens deserves it?? (Bagwell, Biggio and Beltran too, actually. Beltran’s the man!)

  12. Paul says:
    18 October, 2004 at 10:21 am

DAMMIT. I watch CSI: Miami a lot; I would have loved to have seen you as a guest star.
Oh well. They’d’ve probably ended up making you play a sex offender or drug dealer anyway. I don’t think you’re at THAT point in your career, either.

  13. anc says:
    18 October, 2004 at 10:22 am

well Wil, when CSI:SanFrancisco starts production, you put that wig and dress on and head on down there.

  14. James says:
    18 October, 2004 at 10:41 am

Congrats on the magazine. Can’t wait to read more on it, and the book deal. And i definitely agree with u on the Boston/St. Louis World Series. GO CARDINALS!! WOOHOO!!

  15. *Melinda* says:
    18 October, 2004 at 10:42 am

You should wear the wig and dress for Halloween this year…and take lots of photos…
somewhere along the line, someone may need a good headshot of “Wilma”. 😉

Obviously it’s time to start pitching the remake of Tootsie with you in the Dustin Hoffman role….

Dude, would you at least consider coming East once in a while? All of us east coast fans would love to see you but can’t afford the plane fare out there 🙂 I know you may not have control of where you appear, but if you do, please come out to DC or NYC sometime, huh?

  18. zettgrl says:
    18 October, 2004 at 10:58 am

wil, you just need to figure out a way to meet one of the writers for CSI (the original) and get them to write you in… maybe as a visiting celebrity poker player that is witness to a crime. oh, or how about the show las vegas! you could be in a tournament at the montecito!

  19. Sue says:
    18 October, 2004 at 11:09 am

Cool! My kids are major Teen Titans fans! They are excited to hear Aqualad will get to be on the show again!
ROFLOL at the thought of you in a dress and a wig! Why don’t you dress up like that for Halloween and post a picture so we can see? 😉 One of my old boyfriends from high school found me on the internet a few years ago. He sent me pictures of him in a wig, dress, and high heels. My goodness, was I ever surprised, as he made quite a good looking woman! His wife put him up to it for Halloween, and it was hilarious!

  20. angie k says:
    18 October, 2004 at 11:16 am

zettgrl’s right: I think you should pitch CSI: Vegas! to them. You can play poker, be on a cool show and hey, I bet they’d even let you wear the wig and dress. Just call it game strategy.
And speaking of poker and tv… when are you going to be on Celebrity Poker?! Seriously. I just watched an episode that had Dennis Rodman playing. What?! If he got on you should be playing, too.
Have fun at Sunday’s signing. Local writer comes home to childhood haunt. Very cool.
    cheers!

  21. Adam says:
    18 October, 2004 at 11:20 am

Durn – I’d have enjoyed seeing you in CSI: Miami as it’s one of the few programmes I watch regularly. I’d have enjoyed it even more if you’d been dressed in a wig with a hilarious falsetto, but there you go. I guess they might not have seen it that way…

  22. Kristina says:
    18 October, 2004 at 11:31 am

I remember when Ryan’s feet couldn’t touch the floor when he sat at the dinner table.
Hey, my feet don’t touch the floor at the dinner table (well, my heels don’t)! Unfortunately, I stopped growing 10 years ago…

  23. Kroeme says:
    18 October, 2004 at 11:43 am

Dude, I hope they’ll let you sign some books too, I’d love to add to my collection of WW autographed books, the famous local author. Yeah!
Bring some OBEY WWdN t-shirts if you think of it, would love to buy some.

  24. Brian says:
    18 October, 2004 at 11:50 am

Who’d WANT to be on CSI: Miami? Have you seen that show? Awful. Well, most of it’s okay, but David Carouso can not act. Last week they had a payoff scene… the only one with real drama… and the guest actor is pleading with Carouso’s character to find out why the thug killed his sister (the brother had thrown her drugs down the toilet which pissed off the thug so he killed her) and he asks Carouso if he knows why his sister is killed. Out comes the monotone answer that he doesn’t know. It could have been delivered with power and sympathy, but this guy can not act.

  25. Mark Whitfield says:
    18 October, 2004 at 12:00 pm

Come on Wil… You have to pull for the Astros. After one of the biggest comebacks in baseball to snatch the wildcard spot. Root for the underdog. Go Astros

  26. Malerin says:
    18 October, 2004 at 12:11 pm

Sweet. I should find some Teen Titans to watch.
But what about Austin? When are you going to tell us about “one of the greatest, superest, funnest, most bestest weekends” of your life?

  27. Ed Adkins says:
    18 October, 2004 at 12:19 pm

You know, that wig and dress idea might just take off. CSI Miami might not be the show for it, but my guess is there’s plenty others where “Wil Wheaton in drag” might be just the ticket for a ratings boost.
So far all I can come up with is “an unforgettable Fear Factor Special,” but I’m sure there’s gold in that.

  28. Brett says:
    18 October, 2004 at 12:32 pm

I might’ve actually watched CSI: Miami if you were on it. Otherwise, I’m with Kroeme, I just can’t stand David Caruso. I still don’t get how a pale red-headed guy can even survive in Miami. He should be burnt to a crisp. 🙂

  29. Jason says:
    18 October, 2004 at 12:38 pm

CSI? Oh man oh man! That would have been the coolest thing just about EVER. I love the CSI shows.
Damn. We gotta get you on a Law & Order episode 🙂 now THAT would be pretty damn cool

  30. Madonna says:

Top 10 reasons I want to see the Red Sox win the next three and reach the World Series – and then win it:
    10. I hate the Yankees
    9. I hate Steinbrenner
    8. Maybe fans/the media would finally lay off Buckner.
    7. I really hate the Yankees
    6. Johnny Damon would probably never cut his hair again.
    5. As a Dodgers fan, Gary Sheffield and Kevin Brown are not remembered fondly.
    4. Steinbrenner might finally melt like the Wicked Witch Of The West
    3. It’d be pretty cool to see a team come back from down 3-0 and win a Series (just as long as it’s not the Yankees)
    2. I’d like to see Boston show their Yankees who THEIR daddy is
    1. It’s only been 86 years since they last won a World Series….. It’s about time.

Wow! Sounds like you’re gonna have a very busy weekend. First the Dallas Comic Con and then an appearance at a new Borders store. Busy, busy, busy! I can’t wait to hear you read this weekend! I’m defnitely looking forward to it.

  32. Gaerfindel says:

Teen Titans — Way cool, Wil! I love Aqualad.
Which reminds me, what is your opinion (if any) on the new animated Batman series? Without Mark Hamill, I just can’t get fully behind it.
CSI Miami — Bummer, dude. Woulda been hella cool…
Red Sox — While I deplore your break with reality, as a Romantic I must applaud your eternal optimism. \m/
BTW, read “Wil Saves” in the latest Dragon; well written. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you on IT Conversations. Gods but I do love internet radio!

I finally managed to catch the Teen Titans episode with Aqualad in it and now I can’t stop watching cartoons. I’ve become an [adult swim] junkie even. So I’m looking forward to seeing the new Titans East thing as well.
Congrats on the Borders gig. May there be lots more! This time I won’t be late for the reading, I promise.
Bummer about CSI:Miami. But now since they’ve seen you, perhaps you’ll get called up again?

  34. Chuck says:

It’s “Carbon Monoxide” that’s stuck in my head…
If you haven’t seen Cake live yet, make the effort — it’s worth it. Be warned, tho. When McRae wants you to sing, you will sing. During “Phones” at SXSW a few months back, he had us sing the chorus for a good 15 minutes before he was satisfied.
But there’s nothing quite like being in a crowd of thousands that know the placement and timing of every single “hey” and “ho.”
    🙂
Wil, I saw this on their tour listing:
    11/18: Los Angeles, CA
    Universal Ampitheatre

Congrats on your recent abundance of work… and even more so on your recent quality family time! Knott’s “Scary” Farm!! My grandfather owned a train and hobby shop there until the 80’s when he passed away. I grew up at Knott’s. My parents met in that train and hobby shop, and I used to watch the Friday night fireworks almost every week as a kid… man I feel old!

  44. Beth says:

Glad you have a good (if tiring) weekend, Wil. I did a little geeky fangirl dance when you mention Teen Titans, when IS the episdoe going to air? I went to Howl-O-Scream down here, probably a lot like Knott’s Halloween Haunt. What about coming to Tampa for a signing??? Huh, huh, huh??? *puppy dog eyes* I won’t stop bothering you until you visit us down here…we miss you, Wil. We love youuuuuuu.
P.S. A video game? *does the fangirl dance* Yay! Wil’s gonna be in a video game! Yay!

  45. Kimberly says:
    18 October, 2004 at 4:06 pm

That sucks about the CSI role… It would have been awesome, even if you DID do it in drag… LOL.
The Halloween Haunt sounds cool. There’s something like that about an hour west of where I live. I go every year, even though I’m probably the biggest pussy ever. I’m usually on the verge of tears I’m so scared, but I love it! Sounds like you have a great family, Wil. You are truly blessed. :o)
I’ll be looking forward to the magazine article!

Hey Wil, you are going to tell us before the WPT Hollywood Home Game episode airs aren’t you? I hope I didn’t miss it already; I have to get someone to tape it for me.
Go Sox. Go Cards. Go Teen Titans. The original CSI is a far better show. Even the new CSI:NY is weird; as great as Sinise is there is just something off.

How’d you like that traffic to Haunt? I was at Medieval Times Saturday night and it took an entire hour to travel 3 blocks on Knott.
I was just telling my husband that I hoped you would be doing a reading more locally and now you are! Color us stoked!

  50. joshua neff says:

Wil, you should come do a reading at the Borders in Greendale, Wisconsin (in the greater Milwaukee area…you know, where GenCon used to be!), where I work. We have loads of geeks working at the store (including the General Manager, who is an old school comics geek and SF fan) and quite a few geeks who regularly shop here.
