Based on the hate mail that’s currently pouring into my inbox, someone has impersonated me on a Rodney Dangerfield website and said some pretty horrible things.
I don’t have any details, but I want to get this out RIGHT NOW: I thought Rodney Dangerfield was a brilliant comic, loved his work (especially in Caddyshack) and I mourn his passing along with everyone else.
If someone could let me know exactly what it is I’m alleged to have said, I’d like to know so I can take a crowbar and a blowtorch to find out who did this and clear it up.
Gnomedex report is almost done, and should be up in about two hours.
Update: Found it. In the guestbook on Rodney Dangerfield’s official website, someone posted an absolutely disgusting comment under my name. I won’t reprint it here, but if you want to see, follow the link.

That sucks, Wil. You are, at least from what I have read, a great guy and don’t deserve this. The memory of Rodney does not deserve that either. As an avid WWdN reader, I know that is not your style.
Found the fake post. Pretty disgusting to think somebody could slur the names of not only Rodney, but you too Wil. Sad.
What I find even harder to believe than the fact someone was so nasty as to post a thing like that in your name is that the other people truly believed you were the one who posted it in the first place.
People can be so frustratingly gullible.
I’m sure Mr. Dangerfield’s family, if they ever see it, will know better than to believe you had anything to do with such a horrifyingly bad thing.
And hopefully the website admin will blam it before the day is out.

Our deepest and most sincere hopes and prayers go out to everyone that knew Rodney. To his lovely wife, (whom I’ve met), sorry sweetie. You know that you were the best thing that ever happened to Rodney. To his fans, we will all miss him. I had the honor to work with Rodney on one of his last films. He was an old school pro. Rodney always worked, writing down jokes, trying them out on the cast and crew. He came from an honest place when trying out new material. He’s awesome, but the secret is that he acted like he didn’t know he was awesome. This is one of the nicest, and funniest guys I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I love you Rodney. We are already missing you.

I can say that many people do have hotmail acct’s that they use as their ‘main’ accts… infact, I can vouch for at least one who is a ‘star’ in his own right (just sent my neice an autograph picture for her birthday last week – she LOVED IT!!!!!) and that person does have a hotmail address.

What they did sucks. Happened to me too, though wasn’t as bad as what happened to you. Look me up on classmates.com (actually, please don’t), and you’ll find an entry some dingbat created for me. The frustrating thing is that I can’t change my own entry, because I didn’t create it. Sheesh.

Granted it doesn’t make up for the fact that this whole thing happened, but at least nobody else will be mislead by it.

This is going to sound funny, considering that I I “reinvented” myself as Madonna online back in June when it came out that she wanted to be called Esther, but here goes:
There is a difference between screwing around online and being funny, and being vicious. While I’ve been “Madonna” for four months now, I’ve never crossed that line: I’ve never used “reinvention” as an excuse to post anything vicious about her or anyone else, and I’ve never tried to convince people that I am the real Madonna Ciccone (in fact, my blog has a disclaimer on it, saying as much).
If someone had created a site, claiming to be Wil, and said things as a joke like “Captain Picard should’ve been given hair implants to make him look like a Chia Pet” and “I always dreamed of turning Data into a vacuum cleaner” and “Troi – You, me, holodeck, NOW!”, it would’ve been hilarious. However, the way Wil’s name was used was anything BUT hilarious.
What “Wil Wheaton” did on rodney.com crosses both lines. Not only was that a sick thing to say, but doing so claiming to be Wil makes it even more disgusting. If the person who wrote that felt the need to spew such venom, he/she should’ve had the guts to make up a fake name, or just use their own. Writing it as “Wil Wheaton” unfairly drags Wil into the mess.
So, take it from someone who has amused themselves by playing around with a new identity online: When it’s used to spoof (ie. You want to be Esther now? Fine, I’m Madonna now!), it’s cute and funny. When it’s used to cause pain and manipulate people, it’s not.
Believe me, I’m not laughing at what “Wil” posted on rodney.com. I sure hope the REAL Wil gets him, and introduces him to Worf.
Wil, I hope you don’t let this get to you. I can’t imagine what type of mongrel would do that to both you and Mr. Dangerfield’s family.
I just wanted to add my support for you here, because I know that it’s often those negative things that we as people focus on, so I wanted to give you another positive comment to read to balance it out.
From what I’ve seen/heard/read from you, I would never believe for a second that you’d do something like that.
I am completely flummoxed.
First, I just can not understand why anyone would do this to Mr. Wheaton. Seriously. I don’t know him personally but my guts say he’s a good man.
