impersonator?

  • Uncategorized

Based on the hate mail that’s currently pouring into my inbox, someone has impersonated me on a Rodney Dangerfield website and said some pretty horrible things.
I don’t have any details, but I want to get this out RIGHT NOW: I thought Rodney Dangerfield was a brilliant comic, loved his work (especially in Caddyshack) and I mourn his passing along with everyone else.
If someone could let me know exactly what it is I’m alleged to have said, I’d like to know so I can take a crowbar and a blowtorch to find out who did this and clear it up.
Gnomedex report is almost done, and should be up in about two hours.
Update: Found it. In the guestbook on Rodney Dangerfield’s official website, someone posted an absolutely disgusting comment under my name. I won’t reprint it here, but if you want to see, follow the link.
Jesus Christ, man. Some people are so fucking stupid, it’s beyond words.
(Thanks to WWdN reader Brian who found the link.)

Why do people suck so bad? No one has better things to do than impersonate those who actually give a shit and spread rumors… whopper head’s !

oh wow.. I don’t know what was said wil..but that is just a horrible thing for someone to do..
I am going to miss Rodney too.. he was comic genius.
I hope you get to the bottom of this ASAP!

What a horrible thing to do to someone. That impersonator is trying to ruin your creditability and hurt the people who loved Rodney and are in enough pain right now. This so-called person probably thinks kicking puppies is fun too. Good luck in finding out who did this. We’re behind you all the way.

In a random search on Rodney and Wil I came up with this weirdness:
“I’m going with three picks for the pool: Darrin McGavin due to the stroke, Wil Wheaton for the rehab, and for sheer randomness I’m going with Peter MacNichol.”
From this thread on the link posted in the dandy URL field.

  5. Jennifer says:

So did you find the posting at http://www.rodney.com? Looks like someone using a hotmail address made a posting (it was on page 4 when I saw it).

  6. Trista says:
    6 October, 2004 at 1:44 pm

What a horrible thing to do! I’m sorry for you and for Rodney Dangerfield’s family, friends, and fans that this has happened.

  7. Elise says:
    6 October, 2004 at 1:50 pm

And the sad part is people will actually believe Wil wrote that. What’s to stop anyone from posting as Madonna or the Pope, common’ people. *shaking head at the sad state of intelligence that presents itself on the web*

  8. neph says:
    6 October, 2004 at 1:51 pm

    found it..
    this is what it said.
“Thank you, God. For finally bringing judgement and wrath on this horrible human being. I just wish it could have been due to AIDS or cancer.”
Very uncool.. and yes it was the guy using the hotmail acct.

  9. Kris says:

Wil, page 6 on rodney.com shows what was said by the imposter. I know you didnt say those things. Dont worry, that guy wil be caught.

I’m not sure it’s worth your time or effort, but what this person did is about 6 shades of illegal and not nearly as untraceable as they probably think it is….

  11. Louise says:

Some people are so lame!!! What an ugly thing to write, first of all and then to pose as someone else.
    bad juju!!!
    Moving On…
YAY! I can’t wait for Gnomedex!

  12. Stacey says:

Do people really not have better things to do with there time than to mock a brilliant comics passing while dragging you in it? I can find some things for them to do that are worthwhile. However I don’t think this person is fit enough to scrap the mold off a prison wall with their tongue. Sorry this has to happen to you Wil!

Dam, I like to stir things up, but that’s just totally not kosher. Hope you catch the asswipe.
    Miss you Rodney.

I’ve only been reading your blog for a few months now. And, I don’t know you personally, but I would never believe that you would post something like this. You seem to be a real nice guy…..and one of the only genuine and down-to-earth people left in LA.

  15. Adam says:

I’ve been taking a moment to savor the irony that the a-hole who made those comments also posted WWdN as a URL, directing everyone here where they can plainly see that you’re not responsible for such depravity.
One look around and they’ll know the truth.
It reminds me of Dick Cheney referencing factcheck.com last night in the debates. He meant factcheck.org- take a look and you’ll see why mentioning “.com” was such a colossal error of judgement.

  16. Jeremy says:

This is my first visit to willwheaton.net, so I hope I am posting in the right place. (Trying to be carefull not to stick things where they don’t belong) I just read Mr. Wheaton’s book, “Just a Geek”. I found it interesting to hear about the day to day struggle of the modern actor. I also laughed out loud while reading the book and that hasn’t happend for a long time. The book was fun to read.
I hope you find the impersonator and put an end to him/her before he/she can breed.

  17. George Bush says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:04 pm

    Wow! So lame!
    Someone needs a hobby.
and some people need to like, not believe everything they read on the internet.
For example, I’m not actually George Bush.

  18. Chris the Tiki Guy says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:09 pm

Wil, I’ve got the thumbscrews, rack, a hungry rat, and bamboo for under the fingernails standing by in case you find this guy…

  19. Louise says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:12 pm

    Hey Wil,
I just scrolled through Rodney’s website and I am really bothered by the ingnorance.
I truly feel you’re not capable of feeling anything so ugly and DO NOT feel any of those horrible words are believed by us.
Ummm… I’m not so sure why such things are written. I have no clue what would bring an indivdual to write words of hate instead of words of empowerment on such a day of sorrow.
.. block this one out, man!!!

  20. Kilbia says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:13 pm

My condolences. I’m afraid the only brush with impersonation I’ve had is when I panicked because [email protected] was already taken…and it turned out I’d already taken it and forgotten about it.
I wish I could condemn the impersonator more vehemently, but I remember fifteen years ago when I read a satirical piece in a teen magazine about Wil Wheaton losing his memory (as evidenced by the fact that he couldn’t correctly answer any of the quizzes about him in competing teen magazines) and I totally fell for it because I didn’t get the concept of satire yet.

  21. Larry Flynt says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:15 pm

I can’t believe that people would actually think that anyone even remotely famous would post something like that under their actual name. Someone must have thought “Finally! Now I can make that Wesley Crusher pay!” Way to go, jerkface.
Also: I’m totally not Larry Flynt, the smutpeddler who cares. However, I might be Stephen Hawking!

  22. Craig says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:16 pm

The sad thing is that someone actually believed the post was genuine…like it would really come from a hotmail address.
While you’re at it, take a crowbar to the skull of whoever posted this: (Probably posted by the originator)
    To late Wil…
    10/6/2004 3:55:58 PM
Damage is done..scroll down to see what Wil Wheaton (Star Trek and Stand By Me)ACTUALLY wrote about Rodney…how truly sad…

  23. Scaryduck says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:18 pm

It’s very sad that some troll thought that might be funny. He has my sympathy, and I hope they get the help they need.
Wil: Just got round to reading JAG – wow. Glad you’ve found your niche in life, such a shame there’s jerks out there who still think you’re Wesley.

  24. Louise says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:18 pm

    Yeah, but Kilbia
There is a clear line drawn between satire and being deliberatly being cruel.

  25. Lawless1 says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:21 pm

Sorry to hear someone is smearing your name, Wil. Anyone who reads your blog would realize that you’re not religious enough to comment on any kind of “judgement” or “wrath”. You just don’t talk like that. And that wasn’t meant to sound mean spirited even though it may read that way, just in case my bad luck from Monday is still following me…

  26. Bob King says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:22 pm

Wil, I don’t know you personally, but have some acquaintances who have me you from Play Inc. that was based out of Sacramento, and they only had good things to say about you. I appreciate getting to the bottom of things, and ensuring Mr.Dangerfield is show respect. Take care, and best wishes.

  27. HillaryGayle says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:23 pm

Wow. That’s really low. I wonder what the hoaxer thought he/she would GAIN from that.
I wouldn’t worry too much. Surely no one with any intelligence would think you’d actually SAY THAT. e_e
I would THINK that any hate mail would’ve been directed at the email listed on the comment itself.

  28. Don says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:27 pm

I saw Rodney’s death reporting on cnn.com last night after the debate. It made me sad because, he, like you and some others, are apart of me; my memories growing up.
I really enjoy reading your blog for a couple reasons. One: I feel a sense of belonging with you because of the characters you played while we grew up. But also because I enjoy the person you have become, your writing, and the values we share. I don’t *know* you, obviously, but I *feel* as though I do, and that’s worth something. I suspect others feel the same way. Most of us accept and respect that boundry.
When I logged onto your site today and read that. I was pissed, and *I* took it personaly, LOL. Silly? Maybe. I dunno.
When I read what he/she wrote in your name it was dead clear to me that the person either didn’t know you or is obsessed and resents you and that boundry the rest of us respect.
Wil, best advise, if I might be so bold, I can give you is to “let it go” Because my guess is that this person really wants attention, especially from you and perhaps even your web site. Good or bad attention is attention all the same, and I’d hate to see this guy rewarded for such a deplorable act.
You’re smart Wil, think about it. If you do anything at all, please consider his/her motives and be careful not to initiate future attemps to gain attention this way by making their effort successful.
If you have emailed this person already. I would too probably under the cercumstances; I’d be pissed.
ANyway, enough rambling. Sorry that happened to you, and I am even more sorry for Rodney’s family. :-(((

  29. Lynette says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:28 pm

I don’t know what’s sadder: that someone would stoop so low, or that other people are asshatted enough to think you’d post something like that.

  30. WheelMan says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:33 pm

The person who posted that isn’t just a jerk, he’s a coward to hide behind someone else’s name.

  31. Paul says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:38 pm

Truly sad! But at the end of the day, anyone who is a frequent visitor to WWDn and reads the stuff on the site, realises that Wil wouldnt do anything so nasty anyway…..I pity the fool who did it…..
    Later Folks!

  32. Ascenza says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:41 pm

Dude, that was beyond low. Sorry that they decided they needed to use you Wil as a scapegoat. Hope you can manage to get it all cleared up, and I really like what you said in response to them…very classy.
In other news…GNOMEDEX!!! So excited for this one.

  33. ttrentham says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:44 pm

The comment will keep moving down pages as more people post new comments, so the link won’t get you to the offending post. You’ll just have to move down the pages until you hit this timestamp: 10/6/2004 3:37:14 PM.
The gullibility of some people never ceases to amaze me.

  34. Karen says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:45 pm

What a horrible thing to happen. I don’t understand why anyone would think that was a clever thing to do.
Having read your books and followed your weblog I wouldn’t have believed for a moment that you had posted it.
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had unpleasant e-mails as a result.

  35. Dan says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:49 pm

Clearly, this was just a wanker, not worth losing any sleep over.
The irony is, it almost seems appropriate for Rodney to get some good insults upon his death — not this guy’s waste-of-electrons, but some really good, funny put-downs for the man who got no respect.
Anyone remember the “This is a Dead Python” eulogy delivered by John Cleese?

  36. Caffeine says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:51 pm

I have been reading you blog for a few months now and I know there is no way that you would have posted such an awful comment about anyone, you just don’t have it in you (unless they have used your name to post horrible comments about someone else).I hope that you find a quick resolution to this and that people from Rodney’s site will find out that the poster was an impostor.

  37. Dave says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:52 pm

This doesn’t surprise me. You’ve got something good going here Wil and the trolls of the world are going to try and mess with it.
They are so sad that pathetic attempts to tear others down is all they’ve got.

  38. MsZilla says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:55 pm

I’m sorry to hear about this. I had a recent experience similar to this, but I’m not famous so no one gives a rat’s bikini but me. Someone’s using some of my game review articles as alt-spam for a teen sex site. I don’t understand these soi-disant people at-@()&$# all.
On a hopeful note, it seems to be getting rather firmly buried under the avalanche of other comments. There are a couple of email addresses on the site where you might be able to get ahold of someone directly in case the luzzo comes back, but I’m assuming you have those. If not, just drop me a line and I’ll send you the link.

  39. Nipsey Flynn says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:58 pm

Fucker. I hate HotMail Wil. Hate. Hate. Hate.

  40. Happy Steve says:
    6 October, 2004 at 2:58 pm

Wow, I’m shocked that people didn’t see it was an obvious troll. Have they never been anywhere else on the net to realize there are crazies out there? Oh if only we were so lucky.
Anyway, I await your Gnomedex report. Your reading was very entertaining.

  41. Ken says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:01 pm

Heck Wil, remember the old adage, “no publicity is bad publicity?” Perhaps some folks going through the comments will see the trollscrawl, visit your site in anger, see the refutation and realize you’re okay, then start reading the site, and end up becoming huge fans! It could happen!

  42. John says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:04 pm

No respect. The troll’s givin’ no respect. Not for Rodney, and not for you.
I’m thinking this should be the germ of a really good EB9 sketch/tribute…

  43. Nicole says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:06 pm

I noticed there were several comments after that first one where someone mentioned it “to late, Wil” (did he mean TOO late?) and one where someone said you should be ashamed of yourself. Neither with an email address, both obviously the same pathetic person who started it. Hope you nail the punk, Wil!

  44. sparrowhawk says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:28 pm

Who runs that Rodney website, anyway? Any chance that someone WWDN reader knows that person? Any chance we can hope that webmaster is clueful enough to log IPs of those posting on the guestbook? Can anyone ask?
If so, we can track this turkey down then… give new meaning to the word “OWNED!” 🙂

  45. Jeran says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:30 pm

How rude do people have to be? I think anyone with half a brain would question the fact that it was listed with a hotmail address yet pointed at your domain? Duh. Screams of a fake to me. It is sad that he’s gone, but why do people always have to try to disrespect others when things such as this happen. Someone has passed from this world. It’s not an excuse to try to hurt others, either emotionally, physically, or their good name.
I hope you find the guy, Wil.. and I’m sorry that they picked you as a target for whatever reason.

  46. stargazer says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:30 pm

    That is Truly Foul.
How sad that same lame asshole with no sense of deceny has decide to attack you and Rodney in this way.
I’m very sorry that you have yet again drawn fire from people with more free time than sense. *sigh*

  47. Jerry Ann says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:32 pm

Trolls should all be squashed… I hope you wrote to rodney.com and suggested that his IP address be banned. What a horrid thing to do to you and Rodney’s family and friends. What an asshole.

  48. RavenBlue says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:33 pm

What the heck is wrong with some people? What a horrid thing to do. People do strange things sometimes…
    Sorry to hear this happened!
Hopefully you’ll be able to find this guy and report him. Or make him listen to endless Britney Spears records at chipmunk speed for hours, or conk him on the noggin with a burrito… radio free of course 😉

  49. Kevin Hanson says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:52 pm

Yeah, that was pretty bad. I noticed that the imposter left 2 other ‘positive’ messages after the ‘negative’ one – they were full of mis-spellings, however.

  50. Lana says:
    6 October, 2004 at 3:56 pm

I just read an entry in someone’s Livejournal about this. Then I checked your post. I guess they’ve deleted the imposter’s entry but still… are people that bored to do that? Anyway take care.
