50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

as time goes by . . .

Anne and I took the kids to see The Incredibles this afternoon.
Holy.
Crap.
What an amazing movie! It is a brilliant example of why story is so very important. The animation is phenomenal — particularly the simulated hair and water motion — but without the amazing story, talented voice performers, and stellar direction, it would all be for nothing.
I predict that this movie will utterly destroy all previous box office records for Pixar films, and may even make a run at some top-grossing live action movies.
Yes, it is that good.
When we walked out of the theatre, there were some quotes from classic films embedded into the ground, and I saw one that captured something I wanted to share with my wife.
“Hey,” I said, right after we passed it, “You had me at ‘hello.'”
She looked back at me, and smiled. “I know! There are great movie quotes all over the ground here!”
“No,” I said. “You had me at ‘hello.'”
“Right,” she said. “And there’s ‘Here’s looking at you, kid,’ and there is ‘May The Force be with you,’ and there is —”
“No,” I said, and turned her to face me. “You,” I poked her in the stomach, “had me,” I poked my own stomach, “at ‘hello.'”
“Oh.” She paused for a second and blushed, “I like that a whole bunch.”
“Well,” I said, “You did.”
I love it this. Even though we’ve been together for almost a decade, I can still make her blush.

I have found each succeeding Pixar film better than the previous one. So if this is even HALF as good as “Finding Nemo,” it’s going to be great. Plus, I absolutely adored “The Iron Giant,” so I suspect there is going to be some incredible Brad Bird magic here. I’m going to see it tomorrow. I can’t wait!

I just saw the movie myself, and it is totally AWESOME!!! You have to get yourself a job on the next Pixar film. You would rock at it, and they have the golden touch, so you know it would be a kick-ass movie to boot.

When I saw syndrome he reminded me of the “freaky” weird fans at Sci fi conventions! 🙂 LOL!!
I got a question what year is this show supposed to be set?
I say 1970’s b/c of the retro house and car…b/c it looked like when “Syndrome”/Buddy was little it was more like a 1950’s haircut or something. Also the clothes “Elastigirl” wore (as housewife) reminded me of the 1960’s or 1970’s type of clothes.
I was watching the women Incredibles and thinking, “their legs are so flemsy are they are going fall apart?” I mean it looked so much like paper!
I’m so glad this movie is a sucess and I may go see it again. I am studying the animation. Especially at certain parts of the movie. I like watching how the mouth moves and how certain parts of a object interact with other objects like the glass in the car breaking after Mr.Incredible breaks it.
ALL of this so fascinates me! As I told in Wil’s blog the first time I wish I would have persued my education in animation but its VERY competitive! Also the math is too much for me to learn! 🙁
I am good at art but the drawing and perspective of visual arts can be VERY tricky and difficult and as well as rendering!
This is a animator wannabe’s dream! (this movie) and I hope there are more like it…I hope “Cars” turns out to be a success as well.

I saw “The Incredibles” Friday night and it really was awesome. I’ve been hooked on all of Pixar’s movies for both story and animation technique. Glad you mentioned it on the blog.
I also *just* finished reading borrowed copies of “Dancing Barefoot” and “Just A Geek”. I will be purchasing copies of my own, but I’m looking around your site to see how I can get autographed copies.
I wish I had eloquent words to describe how much I’ve enjoyed getting to know you through your blog and now through your books. Many hugs.

You know, I’m not sure my ex *ever* made me blush. In twelve years. Is that one of the secrets then, do you think?
Have yet to see The Incredibles, but will take this blog and all the positive responses as enough reference for me to now do so.
    Hugs to all

That is so cute… reminds me of my husband and me. When we first started dating, I heard the song “You Had Me From Hello” and mentioned how much I loved it. He said, “Ironic, isn’t it?” Yup, he made me blush then and still does now.

Wil, you and Anne are so geekily adorable. I hope in ten years I can say the same thing for my fiance and I!
And The Incredibles–I’ve been working so I haven’t been able to see it yet, but Pixar has never let me me down yet! I doubt they will, this time, too 😀

The Incredibles are the way all super hero movies should be done! We don’t usually take the kids to the movies until after opening weekend – glad we went.

    Aw, golly. 🙂
I loved “The Incredibles” as well. I went to the late show last night, and was disappointed I hadn’t gone to the early one because I wanted to see it again right then! There was not a single moment that could have been beter. I can’t wait to see it again!
To paraphrase the Comic Shop Guy: “Best super hero move ever, thank you.”

    Will,
You remind me of my brother, he has a knack for the romantic “stuff”. He does things like that for his new wife all the time. You’re sons are lucky to have you as a template for how to treat a woman. Good show.
    Jeremy
P.S.(I myself have never been “in” love, so that explains the “stuff” comment)

I wasn’t going to see The Incredibles now I’m planning on it. Thanks for the recommendation. Many movies nowdays disappoint me so I only usually see films…..

Personally, I didn’t like the movie and found it void of emotion. The only thing entertaining was Edna Mode. Odd that Brad kept that character to himself (he voiced it apparently).
The film was too intense and even violent at times and dealt mercilessly with some serious themes of suicide and infidelity. PG animated kids movie folks? “I don’t think so”.
I have little respect for Brad Bird as an entertainer. Shame does not equal entertain. I do not need a movie that over values family or ‘family togetherness’. Kids do grow up and have their own families. Whatever happened to the lessons of ‘letting go’ in Nemo?
If you love to be moralized at, this is your film. If you’ve enjoy directors/writes and thus characters who only understand life through the lens of ‘inadequacy’ and how to overcome that, then this is your flick too (pay attention to the imagery in the film if you watch it again, Freud would have fun).
I couldn’t disagree with you more Will. This movie will NOT blow previous Pixar box office results away. This is a serious (pun intended) departure for Pixar. In my opinion, word of mouth will tank this film (relatively speaking, it will still do well, but not compared to Nemo for example).
Sorry, but I’m really tired of artists thinking they are entertainers and shaming anyone into believing that wanting to be entertained is morally obtuse. This film was not funny or entertaining but a vanity pic for someone who has inadequacy issues.

I agree. The Incredibles is a great movie. I liked it better than Finding Nemo. Some of the movie’s detractors seem to not like the fact that this one focused more on the action and previous Pixar films. However, I’m a big action movie fan so I liked it.

Locus has a great review. One interesting point they make is that because of the animation process, Pixar’s movies all have to have the script finished & polished before the movie is made. As a result, they’re actually written, not cobbled together by committee. Interesting to see that what can be viewed as animation’s greatest weakness (its expensive production) has become its saving grace.

I can’t wait to see this movie, I’m a big fan of Pixar shows. Dreamworks has really turned me off, a couple of their most recent films – Shrek 2 and A Sharks Tale – were a joke, my biggest complaint is how far they went with product placement and advertising. When I watch Pixar films I think of the old Disney cartoons. With Dreamworks I think corporate sponsorship.

You know what sucks is that I can never see your shows. I live in Maine. I think you are a great actor, but then again you will always be my favorite actor even if you never read this.

That is so sweet, Wil, I think I’m going to barf. Heh, just kidding. Really, I want to find a guy that will say things like that to me. Because it’s sweet, and cute, and pretty much everything a lot of girls (including myself) want. Unfair.
Thanks for your view on “The Incredibles”. I wasn’t planning on seeing it, but I might have to do that now. At a matinee, because I’m one broke girl.
