what’s my line? find out tonight at ACME

Posted on 3 November, 2004 By Wil

Just a reminder:
If you’re looking for something to do tonight, and you’re in Los Angeles, come on down to the ACME Comedy Theatre!
I’m a panelist in a live stage version of the classic 1950’s gameshow “What’s My Line?”
It’s going to be incredibly fun. We’re doing it in a 1950’s style, so we’ll all be in vintage suits, and talking just the way they did back when Television gave you cancer if you sat too close to the set.
For all the details, head over to my pal J. Keith vanStraaten’s site.
Print out this entry, show it at the Box Office, and you’ll get 2-for-1 tickets!
The show starts at 8pm. There’s a restaurant and bar right next door (and it’s good, too) so you can make an evening of it! Conservatives can celebrate their victory, and Liberals can join me at the bar for about eighteen hours.

Sounds like fun Wil! Wish I could be there: not that I lived there, especially with Bush back in, but it would be fun to see. 🙂

Wish I was closer to LA. :/

  3. Mark says:

I’m a “conservative,” but I’d be glad to join you at the bar, Wil. No reason to celebrate when such division exists.

You should try to have someone podcast this for you.

Ahh, now here in the UK, we had a lovely lady called Lady Isobel Barnet on our show. She would wear THE most marvellous hats on TV so I hope you’re going to be dressed just as divinely.
Sounds like fun doing it in 1950’s style…

  6. Winona says:

If I were in LA, I would be there, printout and drink in hand.

  7. Devyn says:

I’ll join you at the bar, but is it okay if I’m halfway across the country while doing it?
    Break a leg tonight.

Break a leg! Will drink a Guinness and wish I was in LA tonight. 🙂

I sure hope that you can peform tonight despite the “nightmare” you’re living. This “disastrous” country we live in must make it difficult to perform in your little shows. I’m sure if Kerry were in office you’d be peforming Shakespeare on Broadway, right?

    Will have to get a babysitter… hmm…

Have a great time tonight and have a drink for me. Any chance your show could be brought up here to San Francisco?? I could use a good laugh with my post-election blues…

  12. Jennifer says:
    3 November, 2004 at 2:20 pm

I live in Chicago, so can’t join you at that bar. Though I think my friends and I may drown in our own sorrows in a few beers(a few? okay maybe a WHOLE LOT) this evening.
That Comedy thing sounds like fun, I’d so be there if I lived in the area.

  13. Keith says:

Alas, I live in New York so I can’t go. However the idea of going and drinking for 18 hours sounds inspired. I believe I will do that.

Hope you have fun tonight. To bad it won’t be on TV

Sending some mojo your way for a great performance. If I lived in CA, I’d be there in a heartbeat.
Have fun, and tell us all about it tomorrow! 🙂

This is one of those times where I wish I still lived in Fallbrook–or Oceanside– at least I would only be a train ride away from L.A.– Have fun you guys who do get to go and “Break a Leg Wil!!”

  18. Kimberly says:
    3 November, 2004 at 4:42 pm

I wish LA was in southern Michigan… then I might be able to come… LOL… But, since I can’t, I hope you have fun! Sounds like its going to be a riot!

  19. Clare says:
    3 November, 2004 at 6:14 pm

..well, glad to see you bounced back so quickly.
    …any 50’s vintage prizes involved?

  20. Curious says:

Have you had your cry yet, or are you to busy thinking up more hyperbole to distort reality?
Good god, we didn’t elect Hitler to office, it isn’t the end of the world.

  21. Jay says:
    3 November, 2004 at 6:58 pm

    Wil,
Break a leg! Wish I could be there drinking away the misery of election day with you. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to reading your blog today ’til just now (shoulda spent some quality goof-off time at work perusing your site like I usually do). Kick back a couple for me, and I’ll try my damndest to make it out to one of the next two shows.
Chin up, the Country’s survived worse. There was….ummmm….well, howzabout…no…umm…er…uh…Hey! What’s that over there!
    *Runs away*

Hey Corey F. and Curious: While I respect your right to say whatever you want in this country and have whatever opinions you want I do have to wonder — do you have to be such sore winners? This does happen to be a public ‘personal’ weblog and Wil has the right to post whatever he wants. It’s his site and his opinion and if you don’t share it that’s fine. But read the info above — “don’t be a jerk, okay?”
Much mojo for the show, Wil. Drinking a Guinness with you in mind!

  23. ChrissyDaniels says:

Hope it was a hit. Drink a round for me.

  26. Eric in PA says:

I know what my line is…
Damnit, why do I have to live on the East Coast and have to miss these shows?!?
Save me a seat at the bar, Wil, and order me a pint of Guinness in a frosty glass. The liberal-leaning Registered Independants are with you.

  27. Curious says:
    4 November, 2004 at 7:25 am

I was actually being serious, not mean spirited. Wil was adament in the fact that if George W. Bush won, he and his family (at least children) would sit down and cry. I find that at the very least, interesting.
I say again, one man can not undo this country. If you are unhappy with our current president, thank God (or Buddah, whoever) that you live in the United States, and in four years you can try again to help a man you believe in obtain our highest public office. All of this happens in peace.
Bush didn’t win because of the extreme right wing wackos in this country. Bush won, because when it came right down to it, Bush seems more like a regular guy you could go hunting with, or watch a football game with, and at the end of the day go kill some terrorists. That’s the common guy in America. Kerry couldn’t pull that off. Not being mean, just what I see as being close to the truth.

  28. Curious says:
    4 November, 2004 at 7:30 am

    I apologize, here’s a correction.
Wil said that he would cry, and cry for his children. That’s understandable, if he feels so strongly in his beliefs. I don’t agree with his perspective on things, but I suppose that is both of our right’s.
And you are correct, this is his personal site, and if hates what I write, he can surely take it down. I don’t believe that he has these comments sections to have people only post agreable(sp) things.

The New York Times just posted an article on voice work for video games, and how important it’s becoming to the success in any game. They don’t specifically mention you Wil, sorry, but after reading it I have a new appreciation of how difficult voice over work must be. Pat yourself on the back for your growing success!

Hope the show went well last night. Looking forward to hearing about it. I am in Oceanside (shout out to Andie above, who used to live here), but I’m feeling under the weather myself.
Sounds like it was going to be a good time!

Wil, your blog is famous. It was featured in an article in the Washington Post Express this morning (a paper that is given out for free to all riders of the morning subway in D.C. and its suburbs). They extensively quoted your recent blog on “the voice of america”, and even put a picture in there of your smiling face. Congratulations for getting your message out there so effectively.

  32. Andy says:
    4 November, 2004 at 9:51 am

Wil, wish I could make it to the show, will you ever tour? Seattle is a great place to visit!
    And I can’t help but add…
To Curious; your own words… “Bush won, because when it came right down to it, Bush seems more like a regular guy you could go hunting with, or watch a football game with, and at the end of the day go kill some terrorists. That’s the common guy in America. Kerry couldn’t pull that off. Not being mean, just what I see as being close to the truth.”
Aye, there’s the rub. The truth is the lie, he ISN’T the guy you will go hunting with, unless you are a millionaire (particularly if you are a wealthy Saudi). Does that mean Kerry will? No. I don’t want him to go hunting with me, I want him to lead the country in a sane and responsible manner, not run around spreading fear and starting war. I guess the common guy in America just wants a buddy more than a real president.
    Sorry Wil.

  33. Dana says:

I agree with Andy – take it on the road and come to Seattle.
Your blog is the perfect example of doing it right. You’re a witty, informative, slice-of-life blogger that updates frequently.
I do a tech talk radio show and this week we talk about celebrity blogs, celeb-impersonator blogs and tv/movie role-playing on Live Journal. Yours, naturally, is used as an example. Listen to the audio at http://webtalkradio.com or http://www.webtalkguys.com/mp3/webtalk-10-30-2004.mp3

    Curious,
Nobody said you couldn’t say what you want. What being subtly hinted at, was that with free speech comes responsibility. In other words, try not to be a jerk when sharing your entirely valid opinions. There’s enough partisan hate out there to power all teh interweb for a century.
Also, regarding one man being able to take down a country…(Does this count as Godwin’s law?) Hitler did it. I’m not comparing W to H. Just indicating that one man can make a huge difference. Also, Bush is backed by not only his administration, but now Congress, the Senate, SCOTUS (or he will be after appointments) and much of administrative heads of these (wonderful) United States of America. Also, he is a man who has little to fear from a damaged legacy and absolutely no concern regarding re-electability. This could very well lead into a dark age for civil/human/intellectual rights.

Did anyone get out and see Wil at the Acme Comedy Theatre? If so, how did it go? Did you get a chance to meet him for a drink afterwards?

I enjoyed the show quite a bit, and I’m glad I got the 2 for 1. It gave me an excuse to take the SO out to an actual event ( which we haven’t done in a while ).

I just reciently bought your book “Just A Geek” and I am glad you finally did take the time and write I just finished reading about the TNG movie and when I went to sleep last night, I dreamed I was also on TNG it was a nice dream I do’nt remember what it was about, all I know is I felt a feeling of family when I woke-up this morning I guess that is what I get for reading before going to sleep, thanks and keep on writing, also can you tell everyone more about your cats and Ferris, I’d like to hear more about them too, I have two cats a boy(Blakie, yes, he is black and loves to play tag, really) and a girl(Peper, multi-colored loves to play with thick string and bread ties, yes, you read right she hates cat toies and loves to bounce of the walls and chase her tail ) , Thanks again, I hope you have a great and blessed day.

You are right, my first comment was mean spirited, and out of place.
However, I still don’t agree with, and neither does over half the country, the idea that Bush will turn this country into a wasteland.
I say that in honesty, without a touch of sarcasm.
McCarthy isn’t president, a religious man from Texas who believes what he is doing is the right way to do things is. Millions more voting Americans agree with him than not.
Iraq will vote in their own president with-in a year (hopefully), the UN will become more involved, and I think history will look back favorably upon this administration.
Them’s the facts. (At least how I construe them to support my position. =) )

  41. Michael says:

*I wanted to post this to the election thread, but since Wil rightfully closed-it, I wanted to get this thought in somewhere. I’m sad, too folks, but it’s time to let-go of the body and get-on with it.*
    —
“…On November 2, the John Kerry, John Edwards and the faithful Democrats suffered, died and were buried. On the Third Day they rose again…”
Time to get back to work, Lefties. Swallow that last gulp of stout, scotch, whiskey or whatever pain-killer you’re using, ’cause the wake is over.
This is still a country worth fighting for (55 million of us and the Nader folks certainly didn’t give the Bushies a mandate). The country is split, and not just between the Red center (minus the MidWest) and the Blue coasts…if you total-up the votes for Kerry and Nader, the net is a whole-lot of pissed-off people. Despite facing a tyranny of the majority for the next four years the GOP and the extreme Right can’t ignore us any longer; and if things go straight into the biffy, it’ll be all be their fault (we can’t even act as a speed-bump) and the world will be ours in 2008.
Memo to the DNC from Will Saletan (heavily edited): “…Get simple. Find a compelling salesman and get him ready to run for president in 2008.” Bingo. We need to find our voice again.
The Right survived Clinton, and we on the Left will survive Bush.
    Back to work!
    Peace,
    Michael.
