50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

almost back from break

Posted on 2 January, 2005 By Wil

Winter Break won’t officially end until tomorrow . . . but I have a Dungeon deadline, plus I’m >this< close to signing on for a totally badass weekly writing gig, and those things will need my attention before I can sit here and make pithy WWdN contributions . . . but it’s just too weird to have nothing here for so long, so how about a tiny little update right now?
Winter Break was spent with family and friends, and there was much rejoicing. We had some wonderful experiences this season that will form much of the foundation for a short (fictional) story I’m writing called “Little Christmas,” which I will pitch to some magazines this fall. If nobody picks it up, I’ll publish it myself in November or thereabouts. (It’s a little-known fact that books published in the month of thereabouts always win awards, so I’m leaning in that direction.)
My iBook died again yesterday. This time it wasn’t the logic board, though. In an exciting new twist, the harddrive decided to start making a chirping noise, then a beeping noise, then a “I think I’m going to crap out now, Wil. Enjoy another trip to the Apple Store and seven days without me” noise.
“I’m taking my iBook up to the Apple Store,” I told Anne as I headed out the door into the rain.
“Again?” was all I heard before a cone of silence poured down between us.
It’s about a three minute drive to Old Town, but today it took almost twenty minutes . . . because it’s the last day of a holiday weekend, and there were about 65000 tourists swarming all over the place.
I don’t know why I didn’t realize that it would be a nightmare up there, but as Napoleon once said, “Come on, dude, lighten up! What could possibly go wrong?”
Fifteen minutes of driving around the block later (which isn’t as bad as it sounds . . . I am on Disc 3 of “America, The Audiobook” and it RULES. Jon Stewarts rant about the media on track 2, alone, is worth double the price of admission.) I realized my folly, and drove back home. I’ll try again tomorrow morning.
In happier news, we picked up Season Five of the Simpsons today, and I forsee several hours of hilarity ensuing just as soon as I hit submit.
Okay, hilarity will ensue right . . . about . . . now.
No. Wait. I need to spell check this thing.
Okay.
Now.

Welcome back Wil and happy New Year to all. Today while I ate lunch I turned on the TV to flip around (i work at home) and Spike-TV had on TNG; it was the one where Wesley finds out he’s accepted to the Academy and he and Capt. Picard have a misadventure investigating a planet and basically Wil saves the good Captain’s life. It moved me to a tear when Captain P. said “I’ve always been proud of you Wesley.” Awwww….
good stuff, they just don’t make ’em like that any more.

I don’t know if I did my LJ right but yeah, that’s my blog, careful wil, all I have to say about my family is that trips to mexico are nonrefundable…I’ll leave it at that. btw, i finally have the cojones for the first post. yay. mine is usually not open to anonymous however, give or take I will update it soon and leave it open to inquiring minds.
heh, Ibooks, a friend mentioned on my blog converted to ibook after getting a taste of my mother’s wonderful IMac. I’m almost convinced. but sending rtx files I found out were less of a pain this semester on the Mac. needless to say my journalism class took that as blasphemy.
wil, you are a talented writer who has influenced my style but I still need to read your books, and I have a few ideas myself in that department for business not taking away from the act of writing. but that requires accounting classes in which so called prereqs are not waived. sure. anyway – my old harddrive is out of commission, said friend feels its not worth getting back but i’m going to start working part time to pay off the bill. and the return is free. so there goes my future MFA. yes, I have learned my lesson, no more morpheus and I will back up my files on my san disk.

Josh: I’ll finish the answers to the /. questions this week. I took two weeks of at the end of the year, so I’m catching up on all sorts of outstanding things.
Hopefully, it will be worth the delay.

I remember that Wil is who I found out about Dork Tower from, because of a mention of him in it, but I found an earlier one.

Hey, Wil, I’ve had the exact same experience with my 12″ G4 iBook which is LESS than a year old! Grrr, do you think they are lemons? But besides having to send it away TWICE and being on pins and needles to see if my non-backed-up stuff would still be there when the computer came back (it was), I must admit that I do love my iBook! I also love your blog which I only recently became addicted to and which inspired me to start my own last month. Also ordered “Just a Geek.” I finally had to delete a few of my references to your blog in my blog because I was worried I was starting to sound like a real sycophant!

    Tom-
MY bookstore has his books in BOTH the biography section AND the non-fiction section, as well as autographed copies on display in the front of the store. So there. 🙂

MY IBOOK DIES EVERY WEEK. I’m on repair number 4 and I’m pushing for a new one! Screen, and Logic board x2. Its really frustrating knowing how much I love mac. I haven’t had my “baby” for 3months. Ugh well hopefully this will be time for a new one.

I’ve been out of town on my own “winter break” for almost two weeks. I flew back in last night and jumped on the computer today to catch up on WWdN. To my surprise, there was only one new post. There is now at least one thing I’m not behind on! That’s saying a lot.
Wil: I’m glad you had a good holiday and a much deserved rest, but as I said, I’m back now, so get back to blogging 😉

the hilarity would be even more intense if you were to someday make a guest appearance on THE SIMPSONS…maybe you could be homer’s long lost evil brother.

  17. Jessie says:
    3 January, 2005 at 9:45 pm

oh dude, wil should TOTALLY have a guest appearance on simpsons!!! how perfect would that be???

that sucks about your ibook Wil…
i just replaced my hard drive myself for 20$ in my *ibmcompatable* and because i have everything saved in ghost images on another system, i lost barely a weeks worth of downloads.
    *tear*

    happy new years wil!
If you were to be on the simpsons, I’d totally watch it. That would rule.
You should upgrade yer comp to the new headless imac that is supposedly coming out. Or even get a powerbook. Those rock!

Welcome back from break, Wil…I have to go back to the excitement that is a high school library starting tomorrow. Hope you’ve enjoyed the Simpsons Season Five…my favorite is the first episode: Homer’s Barbershop Quartet. Being a barbershopper and a Beatles fan, how could it not be my favorite?

I was actually in Old Town Pasadena on Sunday, and I didn’t think it was all that bad. Went to Boba World around 3pm and it was half empty. I think what made it worse was the rain, but we parked in our usual garage and found parking right away, and it’s free. I think that might be a bit of a walk to the Apple store from there though, you might have gotten attacked by fans along the way.

Dear god, that’s freaky. My wife’s iBook has had 4 logic board failures since we got it, and just two weeks ago the hard drive started chirping and died on us. Luckily I’m so used to the failures that I backed everything up onto a LaCie pocketdrive and am now running the iBook off THAT because I’m too lazy to bring it to the Apple service people here (they take about 2 months to fix iBooks here).
The Apple support people promised me a Powerbook if the damn thing died again. I wonder if they meant it.

Glad to see you back and to see that you had a nice break. Received Just A Geek for Christmas and spent the next day or so reading it all — it’s a fantastic book! Now I just need to get Dancing Barefoot…
Spend this blogless time thumbing through your archives and listening to your interview on WebTalk Radio from September 19. Very interesting and a good suplement to Just A Geek. Keep up the great work!

Nice to know ya had a good break

    Jessie –
Well, like I said, it hasn’t been that way here. As for autographed copies, well, I got my copy of Just a Geek signed at the Stand By Me screening while Wil was here in Austin back in October, and my copy of Dancing Barefoot was bought & signed at the Dallas Comic Con a couple of weeks later.
There’s only one place that I can think of around here that has a regular supply of autographed novels, but I think there’s a serious difference between buying an autographed book, and getting a book autographed.
At least I have a couple of nice “I Met Wil Wheaton” stories.
    – Tom

Hey Wil! First off, I want to tell you that I really enjoy your entire website. I discovered it recently and am at the moment trying to talk my husband into checking it out. He’s a writer, too – computer books and blogs. PLUS we’re both fans from waaaay back (one of my fave movies ever is Stand by Me). Anyway, I also wanted to point out that your spellchecker missed “forsee,” which should really be “foresee.” I don’t know why it would miss that. Maybe Dan Quayle programmed it? 😉
