feathers hit the ground before the weight can leave the air

  • Uncategorized

I love that I can look out my office window, and watch a steady curtain of rain fall gently into my backyard. It looks like the powdered milk they used in Singin’ In The Rain.
Occasionally, it knocks a leaf off this old maple tree that is in one corner of my yard.
The opposite corner is flooding.
There are about a dozen finches hopping around on my chinese elm tree. The rain doesn’t seem to bother them.
It’s chilly out, but I opened the window a bit so I can listen to them sing.

That must be a nice sight right now. I look out my window and I see nothing but snow. I know its barly in the teens and that there will be more snow to follow shortly

Wil, I ordered Just A Geek and received it just before leaving on a trip to Europe for 4 months. I had already made it half way through your book, but decided to leave it at home since my backpack was already packed.
I’m home now and I’ve picked the book up again… I love reading what and how you write.
    Keep it up rockstar.
oh, and RAIN? we’ve got a 6 inches of snow here in Toronto… mmm snow.

Oh what I would give for a steady flow of rain. It woul dbe lovely right now. It is sunny sure, but -20 celcius out, and snow out the wazoo!!!
Sounds serene, and a perfect way to get back into the swing of things 😀

Wow… were you smoking something to make you this peaceful, or are you really that relaxed? If so, I’m way jealous. \m/ Rock on.

It’s amazing… its January 4th and its chilly in CA and an amazing 70 degrees here in Va. How can that be? Mother nature is rather confused. As warm as it is here though I didn’t hear any finches today. Very nice picture you painted for me. Thanks!

The only thing wrong with this picture is that it is most applicable for a nice spring day but it is January……
Here is the scary thing.. we had a thunderstorm here the other night…
    IN JANUARY!
Its beautiful.. but personally I am a bit concerned over the lovley weather we are having this WINTER.
    Ya.. I worry too much.

What a glorious image – and what a contrast to my own office view. Here in Brisbane Australia, it was 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) yesterday, with a hot, humid breeze enveloping you as soon as you open a window. Overnight we got down to 80 degrees (26 C) and today we’re set for another day of temperatures reaching close to 100 degrees. The air is close, and the sound of cicadas competes with the constant chug-chug of air-conditioner compressors. We’re all holding our breath for the tropical storms heading our way late this afternoon, when torrential rains will wash away the heat haze rising from the asphalt, and bring a much-needed breath of fresh air.

It’s like deja vu, reading that. I was doing the same thing, just 15 or so miles from you, here in North Hollywood. Here the remnants of the hailstorm of the previous evening are slowly being melted and washed away with the rain. Earlier I watched as the finches and starlings dug through hailstones to get at the seeds in the lawn. It reminded me of spring in Toronto watching the birds and the narcissus popping out from under the white snow and patches of fresh green grass and dark umber earth.
It’s been the most peaceful of mornings, and dare I say afternoons, I’ve had in quite a while.
    Thank you for sharing yours.

i love looking out the window.. like watching the birds and stuff, i have a 4 foot bird feeder out side of my window… we get all types of birds.. its pretty amazing.
(i love “Just a Geek”!! im only just starting Act 2.. but i love it so far!!)

I enjoy the rain myself. It just stopped a little while ago here in Phoenix. Of course, I can’t really hear the birds. I’ve got one of those carpet blowers going in the other room since it flooded from a leak. Sheesh…
BTW, picked up a copy of “Just A Geek”. Loved it– I actually read it in one sitting and I plan to read it again. I’ll throw a review up on Amazon and anywhere else when I finish.
    Love the site, too.

Ah yes, rain in socal vs. norcal. It has been raining here in Sonoma County for 2 weeks. I hate the rain, the birds and the smell of spent leaves. When the sun comes out I will love these things again but until then……..I cross my arms and scowl. Not to be a complete downer I picked up “Just A Geek” and loved it. Your style and content is way above what I expected. Not that I sold you out but you know how these type of books usually go………they blither on like this post and leave you feeling light in the pocket and wondering if a actual human wrote the book. Thanks again for the good read. Its the reason I checked your site out.

Yeah, currently it’s raining “gently” outside my bedroom window, but it isn’t pleasant. It’s about 34 degrees, there is a flood warning, along with a winter advisory, the promise of snow in the morning and sleet all day long and I work 30 miles from home. Should I also mention that I drive a neon that weighs about as much as that feather you mentioned in the title, OH! And she (my neon, her name is nina) LOVES to hydroplain. It’s great fun for her.

i’ll stop by again when peace is restored in my house. meanwhile… kisshugs

Giggling at all the rain y’all are getting in SoCal (I assume that’s where you are. Got that impression reading “J.A.G.”). I moved from there to the Great Northwest a million years ago, and it’s been *sunny* here lately. Hehe. I used to say it only rains in SoCal three weeks a year, and all in January. Guess I was close to right.
Just started reading the blog, after finishing the book last week. More on that later. For now, let me just say that you’ve reminded me (1) why I’m a geek, (2) how much I love ST specifically, and scifi in general, and (3) that I’m not the only 30-something trying to find balance in it all. Thanks for sharing, and good look with the writing.

Rain?? RAIN?? I’m in the middle of Canada – after a blizzard followed by a day later by a snowstorm which ended late Jan. 1, the streets here are just finally finished being plowed, most sidewalks still haven’t been cleared, and the temp. for the rest of the week has hovered between -20 and -30 Celsius (colder with the windchill). But I’m not bitter. Oh, wait, yes I am 🙂
(I don’t live here by choice, but by necessity – we usually go through this once a year, and it upsets me every year 🙂 MABMAN SMASH!!)

i like the picture you painted very much. very cooling, relaxing and crisp. reminds me of when i was in perth studying, and i would stand at the balconey and enjoy the winds blowing on my face, and the birds flying with abandon in the sky, and the rabbits are grazing on the grass…. man, this does bring back memories…

I’m looking out my window right now, and I can’t see anything but darkness and my neighbor’s house lights that have just been turned off. I’m in New York, and I haven’t seen much snow in my area. I have been seeing rain, but I want my snow! Haha!
This is my first time posting here, by the way. Catch you later.

Wil — Hey Buddy, I just wanted to say hi. I got “Just a Geek” for Christmas this year — from a mutual TNG fan — and I just want to say thanks. Thanks for one of the best books I’ve read in awhile. I know this is entirely cheesy, but I feel like, reading the way you write, that I can really relate to you. I’m 28, a Chicago actor, and really when boiled down, just a big geek. I love the way you write — it’s the way you speak, both out loud and to yourself. Just lke the eternal analyses and convo’s I have with myself! Please keep living your passion, listening to your wife (seriously, she’s your sage) and loving your kids — you’ve found the secret to life (and I hope you know it).
    Hope to talk again soon…
    Jason
P.S. I’m a somewhat infrequent visitor to the net, but I do check my email, so… I dunno. I guess if you’ve any replies to be made, send’em there, ok?

Birds singing and rain are relaxing….unfortunately since its -35C (-47C with wind chill) here in Winnipeg the birds would be birdcicles and the rain…..well….snow 🙁

Wow. Never thought i’d be posting here.. Actually never knew there was a here until three days ago. Needless to say, bought Geek a day ago and am halfway through it. Damn wil, you seriously have some writing skills… Like todays post. Its strange and refreshingly wonderful to be hearing someones inner thoughts instead of inner rambles and gripes. When i read the post, i could totally see myself at home. Just hangin with the cats, sippin starbucks watchin the rain, as they watch the birds. Keep up the great work Wil, what the post said earlier is true. 2005 is going to be huge for you.

Glad you’re enjoying the beauty of nature, Wil. 🙂
Listen, I bought your book yesterday and I’m about halfway through it. Didn’t sleep, just started at the beginning and read straight on through it. But early on, this question came to my mind, and finally, it got so distracting I had to put the book down and post it. So here goes: Your descriptions of the Hollywood acting scene make is sound like a really harsh place for an real artist to do his thing. Have you ever considered acting for independent films? It occurs to me that there have got to be some talented young film geeks out there with a killer script who want to make Sundance just as badly as you want(ed?) to make another Stand By Me. Some of those independent movies do get picked up and get some great publicity. Would you ever consider working on an independent film project with some of the little guys? Or would your agent toss such proposals right into the garbage if they found their way onto his desk?
(Excuse me while I squinch my eyes shut and pray to the internet gods that you read this one and find it worthy of some kind of answer…)
