50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

i slow my steps and start to blur

What an amazing day!
Working on CSI is as cool as we all think it is. In fact, it’s cooler. The cast, the crew, the director, the writers, the producers . . . everyone is incredibly cool! I know that I’m only on the show for a few days, but I left the set tonight feeling like I belonged there. Wow. It’s the way people told me we made them feel when they worked on TNG, and that’s pretty cool.
Turning into Walter was really fun, other than the extreme pain that came with my wig. Because I did a stunt tonight (I have to be very careful, and not give any of the plot away, so bear with me) my wig needed to be “anchored” to my own hair. To do that, they hair department put this stuff called hair glue on me, and twisted my real hair into little bundles that they secured with rubber bands. Holy shit did that hurt. Then they put the wig on me, and used pins to “anchor” the wig to those little hair glue balls that happen to be attached to my scalp. Believe it or not, it’s actually as fun as it sounds!
The director (who fucking rocks!) and I decided that Walter has this dangerous volatility to him, that is a result of the voices in his head. Walter uses drugs and alcohol to quiet those voices in his head . . . but it’s not working as well as he hoped it would. In fact, it’s kinda making it worse. Okay, it’s really making it worse, and playing that was just too much fun. Of course, because I’m in a serious makeup and costume thing, it’s that much easier to totally become this guy.
We shot out in Northridge tonight, in this über suburban area, and I *really* wanted to wander around the streets in my Walter clothes and makeup, shouting at people that only I could see. I was going to take bets on how long I could get away with that before someone called the police . . . but it turned out that I had real work to do, so that will sadly remain just an idea. Maybe next time.
This neat thing happened tonight. One of the crew came over to me and said, “It’s like you’re getting paid to play.”
“Yeah, I didn’t work all last year, so I could save up for this part,” I said, only half-joking.
But it’s true. I’m having so much fun, and I had this great Moment of Clarity™ tonight after a particularly good take: “This is why I wanted to be an actor”, I thought, “I can’t believe how lucky I am!”
I’ve made some notes, and I’ll do my best to write a cool blog about the day, but it’s past midnight, and I have to be back on the set tomorrow morning, so I’m going to sleep now . . . right after I wash all this hair glue off my head.

Can’t wait to see you on CSI! Let us know the air date and I’ll make sure I turn it on in the lobby of the hotel where I work. 🙂

    ROTFL, Wil.
That photo of you as Walter. It reminds me of the way Tom Hanks looked after spending a few years on that island in Castaway.
    Wilson! Wilson!
Sounds like a great experience. Looking forward to viewing it!

Congratulations on the CSI gig ! I love that show and it sounds like you are having a wonderful time being on it. I can’t wait to catch the episode.

I had a similar(though much smaller scale) Moment of Clarity(tm) today when I found out that through a couple simple twist’s of fate, one of my poems is going to be read by a Dutch poet in his poetry group. Moments like that erase so many hours of “Why The Hell Am I Doing This”(tm), and provide some shielding from future self doubt as well.
And BTW, who told you shouting at people you can’t see isn’t real work, young man 😉

Wow, what great news! I’ll be sure to watch that CSI. I hope sketch gets better soon. I dunno if it’s been posted before, but has Sketch been switched to a diet cat food? Once he gets back to eating normally, a lower fat high fiber food might help his heart out. I suggest it, because I inherited a fat cat (who was my ‘big guy) and put him on the sensible choice diet food- it’s actually a good natural food and since the weight’s come off he’s been lots more healthy and active. It’s been easier for him to jump up on stuff too. Just a thought. He wasn’t an overeater or anything either, some cats and cat breeds just have slower metabolisms.

Walter looks so cool in a manic sort of way, and I’m glad you’re really enjoying the role, I look forward to seeing that episode. How is the Fat Guy? As regards to him not eating properly I know how much that feels like, I’ve had ‘flu for over a week and only just ate something solid for the first time in four days o.O not being able to eat is NOT fun. Give the furball a hug from us and our mogs. His similarity to Ziggy is uncanny. Actually he looks a lot like Cat did too… o.O

Hello there. Love your site. The CSI episode will be a good one, I am sure. I don’t know if you do any of these things, but I was sent a music meme and had to invite 3 other people to do it. I just randomly picked 3 people I thought might do it and you are one of them. If you want to check it out, go to my site and read the post from Feb. 12th. Thanks so much! And keep on having fun the we all should!

Yup! That sounds SO familiar, Wil. When I was working production, and we had a great crew, it was almost like magic, and, dare I say, FUN! Unfortunately, the vast majority were just the opposite. That’s why I moved to the corporate side of the industry.
Hope this is the start of even bigger things!

Great to hear you’re enjoying working on the show. Can you call it working? I mean like that old saying “Get a job you enjoy and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”
I watched the SAG awards last night, it was cool to see CSI get best ensemble. That must be a real boost for the cast and crew, to have your work validated by the people best placed to judge.
Best wishes to the big guy. Hope he has many more nights sleeping on your chest and is feelling a lot better real soon.

Good for you, Wil, both for landing a plum and for struggling through a very American paradox. On one hand, we’re free to talk about our failures, our unluckiness, or things we’re not good at. On the other, people look at us like we’re irretrievably dim/arrogant/obnoxious if we revel in lovely things that happen to us, express pride in accomplishment, or confidence in our abilities. It’s a challenge.
Definitely soak, wallow, swim, and surf in the joy of an excellent life event. Don’t worry about what it means for the future, just bask. Your inner journey has been profound and you deserve to have some unadulterated joy.

I’m going through a really hard time in life right now and it’s nice to see someone I used to watch on tv get ahead in life. It’s really weird because in the past couple of weeks since I’ve discovered your website I’ve been reminded of things that I went through. Sorry about Sketch. Hope he pulls through. I had to put my own cat down two years ago. And after having her being a constant companion for 20 years I was devastated.
Your comments about being a dad are great but they also hit a nerve with me. Being a dad myself is pretty tricky these days as my relationship with my 16 year old is pretty messy these days. Anyway. This site always cheers me up. Thanks. Most appreciated.

WoW! It’s amazing to me to see one of my fav actors guest starring on one of fav shows. I know you’ll be great. Please don’t forget to post which episode you’ll be in and if possible the air date.
BTW, I am a HUGE TNG fan. I liked Wesley. I was shocked to read on your FAQ page that people didn’t like the character. That’s insane.
We also share the same fav episode. INNER LIGHT was nothing less than epic!

Excellent pic of Walter. I had to look twice to be sure it was you! The hair is awesome… Does that make the glue balls feel any more worth it? 🙂
Congrats again on the CSI gig. It sounds so cool for you, and I gotta believe that if nothing else this job will result in a more widespread conception of you being the well rounded artist that you are. Right dude? 😉
I’m keeping tabs on SketchKitty as well… all good mojo being sent to Wheaton household… direct from Seattle.

Now you can swap painful wig stories with your old buddy, Sean Astin. 🙂 Imagine if you had to have your wig tied on for 2 YEARS!
I love it when nice happens to nice. I’ve been pulling for you since I started reading in 2001, and it is wonderful to see you get into fun work, on a show so well written and well received.
Sure hope your kitty feels better. I lost my doggin this past summer and it was heartbreaking… take comfort in that your lil pot pie knows that you’re doing everything you can.

    Hi Wil!
I really hope that your Fat Guy pulls through soon. I had a very difficult time last year. I lost 2 cats (that I had for about 6 years but they were already 8 when I got them) and a dog (that I had for about 11 years). Yesterday my two year old puppy got very sick and I will probably have to take him to the vet tomorrow. I would like to say that I know how you feel because I understand the bond that grows between a person and their pets and I too, began to think about life and all the “I don’t know”s that lay beyond and all the people that I love… I want you to know that my friends and I are sending Sketch as much good mojo as we could muster.
With that said, I’m really thrilled to read that you got such an interesting part on such a great show. You’re a very talented actor and many people stand behind me on that comment. You really do deserve this.
