50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

the one where i post about E3

  • Uncategorized

That sinus thing I had last week is trying very hard to move into my chest. Im exhausted after being awake for three hours, and my cough gotten . . . well, I’ll spare you the details. Guess I have to go see the doctor, after all. Dammit.
I spent the entire day down at E3 with Xeni and a kick ass posse or ultranerds, doing a story for NPR‘s Day to Day on the intersection of Hollywood and the video game industry. It should run tomorrow, and I can’t wait to hear it — we got so much great material, it’s a shame we’ll have to cut so much of it out. It’s a good argument for podcasting: since a podcast is always going to be timeshifted, it can be as long or as short as you want it to be. (Speaking of podcasting, I listened to Card Club on Lord Admiral Radio on the way down and back. It’s the first poker podcast I’ve heard, and I really liked it.)
As usual, E3 was so crowded and loud, I had a very hard time separating the substance from the style. It’s sort of like being in a giant venn diagram of sound effects, game monitors, music, lights, props, 50,000 decibel game demos, people talking, and the occasional booth babe. The problem is, everyone is trying to be louder than everyone else, so after about 20 minutes in the South hall (which is more crowded and therefore louder than the West hall) all I wanted to do was leave, or at least put on some noise cancelling headphones.
I know I saw some cool stuff, because I said something like, “Hey, that’s cool!” But the cold medicine and that really neat exhaustion I feel made it very hard for me to actually absorb it.
The best part of the day was how I got there and home: on the Metro Line. It’s rare that the MTA can conveniently (read: without riding a bunch of different busses and taking three times as long as it does to drive) get me where I need to go, but the convention center is one of those places. I really enjoy taking Metro, and I hope that Los Angeles will leap into the 20th century and continue to expand light rail and subway service.
I have to go lie down for about 65 hours now, or until my ears stop ringing, whichever takes longer.

Know how you feel, Wil. Being sick can take the w00t right out of anything uber-cool. I had a toothache like noone’s business all day yesterday waiting in line for Sith, but thankfully, it died out by mid afternoon.
Speaking of Sith, go check it out. It’s certainly better than TMP and AotC.

Coming to LA from New York City, the biggest adjustment you have to make is the driving.
Oh… what about the PARKING? Holy shit.
I can not express how much I miss my NYC Transit Metro Card.
My apt to the Upper West Side? 20 minutes on the 2.
My apt to Grand Central? 10 minutes on the 6.
My apt to the village? 10 minutes on the B,D, F, V.
Union Square, Lower East, Chelsea, etc, etc. 20 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes.
Now, I find myself driving an HOUR to go 2.3 miles (according to Google Maps) and then paying FOUR BUCKS to valet my car at EL EFFING TORITO??? WTF???!!!11!
    This place is weird.
    Sunny.
    But weird.

WIL… go to the doctor Sounds like you have some bad shit. Thought you were getting better damnit!
I had acute bronchitis last year, and it was a bad bad scene. I was in bed for 10 days. I felt so horrible, I eventually wandered into the local emergency room.
Where is Dr. Crusher when you need her?

The big Expos have always been a let down to me. They are almost always oversized. Yeah there are usually one or two things that are really cool, but it usually isn’t worth the hassle of dealing with crowds and noise and all the other stuff. Anyway, hope you feel better soon.

    Get betta soon, Wil.
I was wondering if you had an ‘in’ to attend E3. I’ve been lucky to go since ’99… was great the first year… got less exciting to the point of not caring after a couple years. I just go for the time spent playing hooky from work with my long-time buddies.
I got lucky Wed. and outta 250-300 or so, ppl. that were holding their raffle tix at the end of the day… I was one of the dozen or so winners picked. I got the Intel P4 Extreme 3.46 GHz w/1066 MHz bus. Worth over 700 bones. [msrp $950!] Alas, I can’t afford to actually BUILD the damn thing with the required motherboard, memory, and other parts worthy of such power.
Cool. At the very least, the Lego Star Wars tee shirt nVidia gave out was fairly cool compared most of the other free swag.
See what I can win tomorrow… lol… not bad odds, y’know?
    Feel better.

Wil, the MAX train in portland similarly rocks. Next time you’re in town give it a ride. it’s pretty cool. Including the tunnel that’s 100-some-odd feet under the zoo (complete with a stop and an elevator).

Oh, Wil, get thee to a doctor! I’ve had that sinus thing that’s going around as well. It sucks, but drugs kill it.

E3 got old for me the 3rd time I went..
It was Dark & Hard to get a look at alot of the hardware in the main room..
The smaller Halls were always lit up and you could actually see the stuff you were looking at..
    But that’s L.A. for ya….. hehe

    Hey Wil,
I know how you feel. I had that crap a few weeks ago. I think you are on the right track to go see a doctor. I should have myself, but I decided to wimp out like I most always do and suffer the conseqences. I know now that I made the wrong choice. Sometimes a little chest pain can turn into a big problem, so go get that seen about right away!! I hope you start feeling better soon. None of us likes to hear that you are sick. You are in my prayers and thoughts! Again, hope you get well Very Sooon:)I hope Anne and the kids are doing great!

Hey, Two things. the sinus business is nasty. Just got over my own personal sinus hell.
2nd… i have to admit that ST and SW ending did not leave me to upset. I lived through it all…Probably still go to Toronto Trek. Love to see you there some time!
