50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

up, down, turn around

Posted on 12 May, 2005 By Wil

When I was a kid, and I or my brother or sister would get sick, our mom always dropped everything and took care of us. We’d usually spend a day or two on the couch, where mom would bring us all sorts of herbal teas, feed us massive amounts of vitamins, and let us watch whatever we wanted on television. Before VCRs, when I was sick, I’d watch game shows until ten, then whatever was on PBS (usually Electric Company or Zoom) until noon, then Twilight Zone until one. After that, TV pretty much sucked for the next two hours, so I’d read a book or take a nap, depending on how lousy I felt. After we got our first family VCR — a top-loading monster with digital numbers and woodgrain accents that weighed about 70 pounds — I would spend the day watching Star Wars (taped from ONTV) over and over again.
Without fail, when the illness passed, Mom would get sick the very next day. I remember thinking that it was like she’d used all her energy taking care of us, and when she realized we were fine, she didn’t have anything left to take care of herself. For the next few days, Mom would take my place on the couch, but she watched soaps instead of Star Wars — I never understood that.
This is, of course, a long-winded way of saying that as Nolan got better yesterday, I noticed a scratchiness in my throat that turned into burning in my sinuses by late yesterday afternoon. I’m not coughing, yet, but boy do I feel like shit.
Looks like I’ll spend today watching Star Wars on DVD.

Drink plenty of herbal tea with honey and lemon, get plenty of rest, and enjoy Star Wars! Oh, and feel better soon, ok? (hugs) I’m sending positive, healthy vibes your way.

That sucks. You might try some sprite to go with that. I usually beat these things in a couple of days.

Sick day TV. Mmm, brain candy! ^_^ When I was sick I used to watch TOS all day. Now I just turn on Spike and veg out on the Internets while listening to the technobabble-crisis-of-the-week. I’m talking about MacGyver, of course! *whistles innocently*
Being sick still sucks though. Hope you feel better soon, Wil. Much mojo to you and everyone else in your family.

The Electric Company rocked!!! I so wish they still showed it so my son could see it. How cool is it that Morgan Freeman helped teach me how to read?!
Good health mojo coming your way. Enjoy Star Wars. Hope you’re feeling much better by the time Sith premieres!

ahhh, the synergy of illness – I’d laugh at it, but when you work in a middle school with 700+ 12-15 year olds, you tend to fall victim to this often. Quite often. Today, in fact. Tomorrow, I get to go to the doc for a blood test to see if I have mono.

    Wil,
You sound just like me when I was a kid!! My mom did the same thing. When I’m sick now, I think back to those days wishing they were back. I hated the sick part of being sick, but I loved the no school, tv all day and sleep part. What kid doesn’t? I’m so glad Nolan is better, but I hate to here you are feeling bad. That is about like my family. When one gets sick, eventually the darn thing goes through all of us. I hope you get better very soon. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers! The best to all your family. Again, get well soon!!

That’s exactly what I’ve always done whenever I get sick, even today! Will you watch them in the order they were released, or by episode order?

Sick kid days. I remember Mom feeding me Jello dissolved in hot water—Jello “tea.” I also remember her being frustrated because daytime TV was such crap. My “sick tape” was six hours of stand-up taped from Showtime. Richard Lewis always made me feel better.

So true! Only my mom had me addicted to All My Children since I was 5, so I watched the soaps right along with her. Today is a great day to start watching your Star Wars DVDs, I also started my marathon today so I can be super geeked out by next Wednesday night for the digital pres. in Santa Monica (my boyfriend is an even bigger geek than me). Leia buns here I come baby! Hope you are better by then!

There are definitely worse ways to spend a sick day than watching Star Wars on DVD, I’d say. Hope you feel better, despite being slightly envious of the SW action that I’m not getting.

I remember that top loader! In fact, my parents have it downstairs in their basement, I think it still functions too! lol
I used to have it in my room when I was in high school… I used to watch Next Generation (my parents taped all the episodes) over and over. That player was noisy as shit!!!
We also had BETA… we were one of THOSE households. Dad hated VHS, but eventually he had to cave in when they stopped making Beta stuff.
What really sucks is that we have a ton of movies and star trek episodes on BETA and no working beta player left! LOL!!!
    🙂 Kel

I have been sick a lot this year, thanks to my now 1 year old daughter. It really sucks to get an ear infection as an adult! But there is something so comforting about staying home on the couch, watching the “sick day” movies, drinking Coca Cola (that’s what I got when I was sick, Coke)and eating peanut butter crackers. You feel like ass, but somehow, its all still comforting. Hope you are feeling better soon!
And Taj, thanks for the laugh!! The vapor rub story KILLED me! Ha ha!

I guess “it’s going around” ’cause we’re sick here too. The kiddo only had a stuffy nose, but I have that AND a cough. Sheesh. Feel Better!
    I used to LOVE Zoom!!
    Z-double O-M
    Box 3-5-0
    Boston, Mass
    0-2-1-3-4
Still hear the song in my head. Dunno if that means I hear voices or not, but I still hear it.

Man does that bring back memories. I actually remember wanting to be in The Bloodhound Gang. Was life actually simpler back then, or is it just that we had no worries in the world?
