pink champagne and swimming pools

Back when I installed Debian, I backed up my entire old /home directory into /home/oldmachine/ and promised myself I’d get to it later.
Well, today, apparently, was later. I cleaned up a ton of duplicate and out-dated files (I had WWdN backed up in four different places. Yeah, that makes sense . . . thank god I know how to use diff) and felt very satisfied when I was done. I suddenly found myself with a nice, organized filesystem. No more chasing those goddamn rabbits with locate for me, George!
I guess it felt really good to clean up the virtual workspace, because before I even realized I was doing it, I had pulled four of my five desk drawers out, and started cleaning them up. Holy crap, did I have a lot of stuff in there that I don’t even know why I saved . . . there were a few bittersweet items in there, which I will hopefully be able to turn into a nice bit of writing.
In my second drawer, all the way in the back beneath a stack of Obey Giant stickers, I found one of those two-sided CD sleeves, and it had three CDs in it: on one side, I had an early draft of Just A Geek in .sxw format, and in the other side I had Bob Marley’s Exodus and Primus’ Pork Soda.
Though it’s been all REM all the time for the last 36 hours, I’ve been listening to Pork Soda today . . . and I forgot what a fucking brilliant album this is. Now I have to go dig through all my CDs (I never get rid of them, so I’ve accumulated about 10,000 since I bought Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me back in the 1990) and find Sailing the Seas of Cheese. Man, Primus sucks!

Perhaps we’ll have some fun tonight so stick around and take a bite of life

  1. I have a Linux desktop and a Linux laptop at work and need to know a bit more about it since I’d like to install jabber2d on it to evaluate IM technology for the enterprise. No, I didn’t have a point.

  3. Yea man, Primus totally sucks. I feel you pain. I bought their Hellucino-Genics Live 2004 DVD and I must say it sucks too. You should check it out. They play the entire Frizzle Fry album as the second set.

  5. When I moved back home to Ohio a few years ago, I must have thrown away 2 or more Dumptsers worth of old computer parts, printers & just Junk I had accumulated from the office/friends when we did upgrades and stuff..
    I guess we all have a bit of *Pack Rat* in us… hehe

  6. Kiss Me x3? Please tell me you still listen to The Cure. Like a fine wine, I think it only get better with age. They get such a rap for being dark and “gothic”, but really they weren’t. Besides, there was much darker back in those 80s.

  7. Did you ever check out Claypool’s little side project, Sausage? If not, grab the “Riddles are Abound Tonight.” It kicks off with a killer track called “Prelude to Fear” and rocks all the way through

    Come to think of it, he just acquired two gay roommates and lost his girlfriend, so in short time he may really love you.
    I once went out to buy a Primus CD at the advice of a friend. I looked for a quasi-metal disc with a strange cover and ended up buying a Green Jello CD by mistake. Never really noticed, though. I’ll stick with Fountains of Wayne for now.

  10. I can’t really respond to this although I’m sure I could try. That whole attempt to connect yourself with other people through common experiences stuff. However, I just met some new people yesterday and I found someone else who reads WWDN. It was so cool! Thought I’d let everyone know. I thought it was pretty cool.

  11. Obviously today was “delve into the deep recesses of our personal past” day. I, too, fought, and lost to, nostalgia as I sorted through some stuff. Was it just us, or was it a national event and I just didn’t get the memo? Who am I kidding… I know what coincidence is!

  12. You mention Linux so positively all the time, but your story about how you tried it and bailed and then tried again later successfully is actually part of what’s keeping me from it!!! Some friends have suggested that I try Ubuntu, but I’m just too chicken, and I just got my mac back, and Tiger is so pretty, and there’s so many stories like yours, and I just hear the phrase “well, yeah it makes sense, but you just have to know how Unix works” way too many times…
    OSX/Linux…it’s all Unix under the hood…

    at the moment, i particularly reccomend the dark side of the garden.

    PRIMUS does indeed suck (Courier makes that look perfect btw)…
    I saw PRIMUS at Woodstock ’94, where, when they did ‘My Name Is Mud’ , things got a bit out of hand. One of the few things I remember from that long weekend. *cough*
    Nice to see you getting re-grounded again Wil, keep the faith and keep it up. You rock!

  16. Thanks, Wil, for reminding me what I *need* to do with a couple of my Linux boxes at home.
    At work I do manage to keep them kinda sorta organized (although a _Canticle_For_Liebowitz_ type archaeologist would get a great peek into my mind). At home, well, the filesystems are kinda like the layers of an onion.
    Have to check out the music you mentioned, althought I do tend more towards blues music these days…..

  17. Totally OT, but did anyone catch WFS on the AFI award for George Lucas Monday night? That was hilarious. He actually did well and didn’t overact for once.
    I only watched because I knew the TKs that were up there with him. Dancing in armor is hard work! lol. It was really funny stuff though. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of GL right now, watching Carrie Fisher get up there and totally roast him was great.

  18. Is this cleaning spree illness contagious? If so, would it be possible for you to spend some quality time with my husband? Thankfully, I’ve been able to contain his mess, but the minute it shows up in any other room besides the one that we’ve designated as “HIS”, it’s fair game and it goes in the trash! This has happened in the past. He has learned.

  19. Pointed my iPod to “Pork Soda” immediately after reading this post. I forgot how much I enjoyed this album.
    Primus sucking?!?! I really enjoy lots of Les Claypool’s stuff and Primus is no exception. Okay, there has been some less than spectacular albums.

This is sort of random, but for the next time you’re sorting through the disasterous virtual desk (mine is insane, so I sympathize!), you might want to look into doodle). instead of the fun of locate. Doodle not only indexes files, but builds a quickly-searchable database using documents’ metadata, which means you have a lot more useful info available to you when looking for/through stuff – there’s even a Debian package available 🙂
    (Ok, so it’s a shameless plug for some increasingly popular free software my husband wrote, but I actually think it’s kind of neat, and it’s incredibly helpful when you’re sorting through the mountain of filecrap. 😉

  34. I caught Primus many years ago in the West Palm Beach Auditorium…you could pick out the show newbs by their dropped jaws when the “Primus Sucks” chants started…
    Naiah, I would definitely give Ubuntu a looksee, it’s one of the more complete and friendly versions of Linux around. When my normal compy was on the fritz, I was still able to function by running an Ubuntu live CD on a machine with no HD…talk about “network appliance”

  36. I love finding old CDs. Just the other day I found my old Rolling Stones CDs. Needless to say I’ve been listening to them nonstop since. 🙂

  37. Primus Sucks! I still test anyone wearing a T-Shirt of Primus by saying that.
    As much as I liked Pork Soda, I loved the previous two LPs (no I’m not counting Suck on This!). Les Claypool has always been a fav (a few comments already mention several of his side-projects). I remember seeing Primus at the Kaiser (Oakland) with Public Enemy and Anthrax, that was nice (or weird).
    Damn, I’m just rambling.

  38. you know how you get in ruts and only listen to some of your music over and over? well, best thing about getting an ipod for me was going through my millions of cds to load ’em on the thing — got me listening to stuff i had not pulled out in too long. like pork soda.
    great cd. and hey — gotta listen to something besides oingo boingo all the time, right? (-;

  39. omgosh…i saw primus open for u2 back in… oh… it was quite a while ago. when they did the zootv tour. i think that was in ’91…?
