sarge goes stable

I’m a couple of days behind on this, but I wanted to mention that Debian Sarge has officially gone stable.
This is really exciting news, and I suggest anyone who is interested in running Linux celebrate by giving Debian a try. I built my current system using their phenomenal network-install, which is probably the easiest way to go until Ian Murdock finishes Progeny.
Congratulations, thanks, and a kettle of tasty fish to the whole Debian developer team, who have worked tirelessly to create one of the greatest free distros in the world.

  1. I’ve been running Sarge on my server for about a year (when it was still in testing). I’ve never had to reboot that server except when adding hardware or rebuilding a kernel to add features. When it went stable, I just did a dist-upgrade.
    Yesterday I installed Sarge on my old Blue & White G3, which was sitting around unused because it’s too slow and doesn’t have enough disk space. With Debian, it’s now a usable system.

  2. Until Debian offers a massage-w-happy-ending.tgz, I’m sticking happily w/ FreeBSD, thank you.
    But *anything* that sticks it to M$, is good by me.
    And what about Apple striking that deal w/ Intel?!?! ==:-O

  3. I’ve been running ‘unstable’ on my desktops for awhile now, but I have been using ‘sarge’ on more server-y machines we have here. Now that it has gone stable those guys will just be getting security updates, which is just how we wanted it. I like how they have the two naming paths you can take… by using ‘sarge’ on one I automagically get stable; while using ‘unstable’ on another lets it keep on keeping on.
    I’ve been thinking of trying ubuntu on a couple of other desktops I need to set up.

  4. You know, the first Linux install I had success with was Debian. I’ve been spoiled by its easy administration (and the fact that you can keep it so slim if you wanna). I still install it once in a while to play with, but I have fallen for Gentoo as my number 1 choice (FreeBSD is installed to :D). Thanks for commenting on it, Wil. The Sarge release seems to be sneaking out slowly. Perhaps its because of the long stabilizing phase.

    I think I understood the word ‘fish’ in that post and that is all.
    Where can I learn more about the kind of stuff your talking about? I’m not totally computer illiterate, although posting this comment is like really super cool for me because I did it myself.
    I might like to have my own blog, but, am clueless. Any suggestions? I would need to start my learning at an elementary level.
    I just remembered something funny. I got hired to sell computers over the phone for an outsourcing company many years ago. When I started I didn’t know the difference between the modem and the monitor.

  7. Boy, first Apple announces a switch to Intel processors, and now Sarge goes stable! I think I saw a bunch of CDOT trucks loaded up with mag-chloride, “Ice Slicer,” and sand headed off down a well-known road paved with good intentions…not to mention that shipment of Eddie Bauer down parkas that came through, in boxes marked “ATTN: Satan, Prince of Darkness”!Seriously, though, as someone who’d been using Debian for about five years, this is a great step. Of course, I went to unstable long ago…but, in general, even Debian’s “unstable” still beats many other distros’ “stable” releases in the stability department. Yes, they have apt for RPM now, so Debian doesn’t have as big an advantage as it used to in that department…but apt still feels to me like it works more smoothly on Debian.Here’s hoping Etch doesn’t take as long to release as Sarge did! 🙂

  8. Wil — You should take a look at Ubuntu. It is a Debian based distro that is kept much more current. The install is really easy and has been building a really strong community. Many people find it a better Debian than Debian. I use it for all my Linux desktops instead of Debian now. Still deciding for servers (I’m partial to FreeBSD).
