50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

"Captain, we are receiving no — shit!"

  • Uncategorized

I haven’t formed an opinion about Digg yet. I think it’s got a ton of potential, but my jury is still out.
Anyway, this morning, I dugg a link to a short TNG blooper reel, from the first season. In this clip, several different cast members flub lines, with cusstacular results. Somehow, I’m not in this one, but I am on a later one where I cuss like a sailor for close to a minute, which I thought was hilarious, but earned me a lecture from Rick Berman about using language appropriate for my age. Thanks for getting me busted, season two editing crew.
I remember seeing this at one of our first Christmas party, and though it’s funny, it’s nothing compared to one from a later season that’s so “blue” an edict was issued from the powers that be which effectively ended creatively edited TNG blooper reels.

digg is useful from time to time, but sometimes you wonder how some of the stuff makes it to the front page, then you read the comments, and it becomes clear.
I’ve been playing around with blinklist (www.blinklist.com) lately, ever since one of their (their=Mindvalley) execs left some comments in my blog, and so far I’m enjoying it – it’s like digg with better stuff and a not-crappy interface. The new auto-suggest stuff is pretty neat too.

ARRRGH!!!! i was almost the first one to post.
Those Star Trek bloopers were funny and strange. I was under some impression that there was no cussing in the future…. even though it is just TV land future. LOL!!

Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday. Was kibitzing you playing on pokerstars tonight during a break and just wanted to say it was nice to see what a nice guy you are, or how good an actor you have become.
    Be well, sir.

I actually have a much longer version of the same blooper reel (at least, it starts oout the same), somewhere, on a VHS tape bought at a con and labelled ‘Star Trek Comedy Tape’. It has about 5 minutes of bloopers, all first season, and you’re in it several times (I seem to recall you refer to the reactor coil as ‘the thingy’, making Patrick Stewart crack up). Now if only I knew where my box of VHA tapes was….

If Berman thought cussing was not appropriate to teenagers, then he’s WAY too far removed from his own teenage years.
Presumably Tommy cured him of any illusions in that regard.

Do you feel older or just old? I turned 33 two weeks ago. Where has the time gone? At least I still get carded.

How odd – yesterday I was reading a Marina Sirtis con transcript where she also mentioned that “blue” blooper reel. It sounded… amusing, to say the least. (Especially as she told the story, which involved a bit of detail on who was sitting where at the party, heh…)
And happy birthday; you share it with my sister, which can only be a good thing.

I can’t decide what’s funnier, Patrick Stewart saying, “Shit, what was the line?” or, during the ending credits of Jane White, seeing you shout across the set, “Betsy will drive you! It’ll be magnificent! That’s not the right thing to say! I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing!”
..I think it’s the latter. Mainly for the absurd grin the entire time.
Seriously, though, happy birthday, man. -raises a glass of Guinness- And here’s to many more.

it had to have been hard for brent spiner, not being able to use contractions…all my TNG life I wondered how he did it. guess it comes with the “actor” territory
    happy bday btw. w00t!

Damacus: A little creepy, posting that here, don’t you think?

  18. Damacus says:

Creepy is subjective. I’m all about full disclosure. If Wil doesn’t like it, I would take no offense to him deleting it.

I found this on the page Posted by Damacus.
“Wil just graduated from High School and plans to attend college. He’s very different from his character on Star Trek. For an eighteen year old Republican he comes off as a “Surfer Dude-Bart Simpson” kind of guy.”
Was this an alternate timeline Wil Wheaton? Bizarro Wil perhaps?

Am I the only one who doesn’t get any sound with the video? I’ve tried opening in Firefox, IE, and just saving to desktop. Methinks Quicktime doesn’t like me anymore. Anywho, I’m sure it’s funny and interesting just to see how actors sometimes, probably often, forget their lines. 🙂

  22. Damacus says:
    29 July, 2005 at 12:31 pm

Shame on me?? Where?! Get it off!
Seriously, though. I don’t get the negativity here. I mean, come on. Everyone has embarassing moments and parents and friends are often quick to bring them up in friendly gatherings as to share a laugh and also know just a little bit more about one another by sharing the moments we sometimes wish we could forget.
As well, that story was something I’m sure any guy whose old enough to have been a teenager can relate to, involving inopportune timing and those things that tend to happen when you’re 16 or 17 and easily excited.. especially when you have a gorgeous woman on your lap and suddenly you’re watching a reel involving that exact woman in a faux relationship with el capitan! lol.
The earlier poster didn’t give many details nor a link. When I found it I could only share. It’s too amusing not to. As I said before, it’s Wil’s blog and he has the freedom to delete it (and anything else) should he chose to.
And please, don’t shame people, especially without providing a reason. Your latest blog post mentions drunken antics, going to drag clubs and involvement in boy scouts. I’m not telling you that you should be ashamed of yourself for how how you may be influencing scouts nor a hypocrite. I don’t know you so I’m not qualified to say that. Same thing vice-versa.
Sorry for ranting in your blog, Wil.

Barry: I got sound with the video. You can also see an mpeg version at http://www.civfanatics.net/~trek/

    hehehehehe
Seems I happen to have a rather poor quality, but watchable, dvd copy of Star Trek bloopers. It has the ones mentioned here plus more. Not sure if the Troi/Captain edited scene or Wil’s cursing is there but I’m willing to bet they are. I’m going to watch it and report back.

  24. Chaz says:

    Boo-urns.
I guess it’s just the stuff shown plus some minor other bloopers and a collection of clips from SNL, In Living Color, etc parodies. Still neat to watch though.

I love digg for keeping up with news from a ton of different sites. I used a guide at Brad’s site to learn how to use the site. Roughly written, but it helped me out a lot.

Damacus: Thanks for the new link. That one worked perfectly fine. As for the Marina story, you’re right. Wil can also feel free to delete, but she’s a mighty fine lookin’ woman, indeed. I would begrudge no man a reaction. 🙂

I worked with Jonathan and Marina on the final epidsode of “Enterprise”, and those two are a gas! I think the days both of them were on count as the most fun I’ve had on a set in a long, long time.
Given what I’ve seen from those two on set, I’m sure that ‘blue’ blooper reel was REALLY blue.

I got the season one blooper reel on VHS a LOOOONG time ago (I ordered from one of the cheesy ads in Starlog magazine, and is it just me, or aren’t they as seedy as any in Rolling Stone?) and had my sides reattached later from the hilarity of it all.
Seeing you playing a young Wesley Crusher and cursing like a sailor on shore leave in a Taiwanese whorehouse would be funny and disturbing at the same time, but “age appropriate language”? To channel my inner Sam Jackson, didn’t that mother fucker see The Bad-News Bears or Six-Pack? I’m sure at your worst, you sounded like you were singing hymns when compared to those foul-mouthed rag-a-muffins.
And concerning the “age” portion of “age appropriate”: Happy Birthday. One more year to go and you’ll be older than Jesus. “BURN on you, Jesus!”
